So far, I’m encouraged by what I’ve read about him, especially the fact that he stood up to the socialist twit now running Argentina into the ground.

Francis, the Argentinian cardinal who has become the first pope born outside Europe in 1,300 years, went to Rome's 5th-century Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore; there he prayed before a famed icon of Mary, the mother of Jesus, which is known as the Salus Populi Romani, or Protectress of the Roman People.

The Church is in good hands - Pope Francis, like Blessed Pope John Paul II and Benedict XVI before him, has a devotion to the Blessed Mother and has prayed for her mantel of protection upon his Pontificat.

The humility and humanity of this man is inspiring and clear to see in his simple actions.

Haha! Reminds me of the movie “Shoes of the Fisherman”. The Pope went out into Rome incognito.

“....mired in intrigue and scandal”

Hyperbole.

I wonder if Reuters ever described the Clinton administration as ‘mired in intrigue and scandal’.

In that there aren’t any other Pope Francises, it’s incorrect to refer to him as Pope Francis I. It would be like referring to John Smith as John Smith, Sr., even though he didn’t have a son named John Smith, Jr.

No one refers to Pope St. Agatho (678 - 681) as Pope Agatho I. There were no others, and thus, Pope Agatho is more than sufficient to identify him.

Thus, Cardinal Bergoglio should be addressed simply as Pope Francis.

Although his intentions are good, he’s actually making life very difficult for those to whom his safety is entrusted. This kind of gesture is good, perhaps even prudent, once or twice. But if he tries to operate this way for the rest of his papacy, he’s actually making things harder for those around him, for the little people.

So let’s hope it’s symbolic. John Paul II did several things like this too, but he also recognized a need to work with, not against, his staff.

Plus the Jesuits famous for being involved in education. Hopefully this is also the start of needed reforms to that order.

" as he looks to usher a Roman Catholic Church mired in intrigue and scandal into a new age of simplicity and humility."

that should be a miracle, since even Jesus had to put up with scandal and intrigue among the twelve apostles...
