While the workings of the conclave are secret, Bergoglio won the papacy, according to comments from cardinals, Vatican experts and leaks to Italian newspapers, in part because the Vatican-based cardinals protective of their bureaucracy snubbed the presumptive front-runner, and a favored candidate of reformers, Cardinal Angelo Scola.
Bergoglio apparently went through the first round of voting, which took place on Tuesday evening, into the conclave as a leading vote-getter, but a number of other eminences garnered some votes, which were handwritten on Latin ballots with Pilot gel pens. Carlo Marroni, who covers the Vatican for Il Solo 24 Ore, reported that Cardinals Bergoglio, Scola and Marc Ouellet of Canada were the leaders.

In the final round of voting, the future Francis hit 77 -- the required two-thirds minimum for election -- before all the votes were counted. Applause broke out, several cardinals said, but the counting continued for completeness. He ended up with “more than sufficient” votes to win, the Brazilian cardinal, Geraldo Majella Agnelo, said. The final tally was kept secret.

Scola went into the conclave with a solid block of votes, including many of the Americans and Europeans, who saw in him an Italian who was nevertheless at a distance from the intrigues of the Vatican. But it quickly became apparent this was not going to be enough, particularly given what news reports said was the opposition of Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the powerful secretary of state under Benedict.

While Bertone failed to give him support, Scola certainly had his share of believers in the Italian Bishops Conference -- it sent out a message congratulating him for becoming pope 20 minutes after Francis was named. The conference later blamed a technical glitch.

If we are to believe this report than at least one of the Bishops couldn’t care less about his oath of secrecy.
My interpretation, perhaps a bit cynically, is they passed over Scola because he knows where the problems are in the Vatican bureaucracy and could have upset the apple cart. Instead they chose a candidate, who although good intentioned, was about as far away from the day to day workings of the Vatican as you could get.
I have the same thought, when I read that Bergoglio came in second during the 2005 conclave.
That's an interesting perspective.
All of these so-called “leaks” are media fiction - period.
All the MSM articles on the conclave have been false and fraudulent. Many support a political agenda. All the articles prior to the selection were wrong. They picked the wrong front runners and the wrong probable winners.
I take all of these media reports with a huge grain of salt.

ROTFL! I was wondering if someone was going to comment on that little tidbit.
Since according to the story, Pope Francis received the most votes in the 1st round, it would be inaccurate to claim as the title suggests that Oullet was “an early favorite”. He could be called ONE of the early favorites, in that the story suggests he was one of the 3 leading vote-getters.
The headline suggests the new Pope was a compromise pick after some front-runner supporters couldn’t agree, but that would be an innacurate interpretation according to the text of the article.
Sadly, in 2005, it looks extremely likely that the entire vote total was leaked by a Cardinal.
Not only did the vote totals make sense (that then Card. Ratzinger had a large lead the whole way) unlike many other speculations, but it had Bergoglio in a strong second place.
Most people did not have Bergoglio on the list of likely Popes, but of the ones that did, almost all mentioned the leaked 2005 vote total.
Given that he now won, and won in only two days, likely he was the second highest in votes in 2005.
Sad, really that a Cardinal could place his hand on the Bible and still completely disregard his vow.
Multiple reports say Schoenborn nailed the swimsuit contest, looking fierce in a red two-piece that accentuated his abs, and had mastered the art of walking in stilettos, a skill integral to the Pope's role of walking on eggshells around questions of sexual abuse.But his reputation as a mama's boy did Schoenborn in. Even his vocal talents during a puppet show using the heads of Sts. Peter and Paul, with Schoenborn dressed as the Virgin Mary, couldn't save him.
"He really did make it sound like those severed heads were talking," said Cardinal Timothy Dolan. "But in the end, I just couldn't vote for the guy."
