Poll: Majority of U.S. Catholics favor change
washingtonpost.com ^ | 2013/03/11 | Carol Morello and Peyton M. Craighill

A majority of American Roman Catholics consider the church out of touch with their views...

The new poll shows a greater yearning for change than when Benedict became pope in 2005. At about the time he was selected, fully half of American Catholics wanted the church to stick with its traditional policies; now, 38 percent say so...

The Post-ABC poll finds 55 percent of Catholics opposing the ban on married priests, while 58 percent oppose the prohibition on female priests. About a third say they want to keep the priesthood male and unmarried.

If you don't like the Church, please by all means leave. By definition being Roman Catholic is difficult, sin is always easier and more fun than goodness, that is why we are all fallen.

The Roman Catholic Church is not a club, it is a bastion of faith and moral teachings. They do not rule by consensus.

The Church follows the teachings of Jesus Christ not public opinion polls.

These polls by MSM outlets are notoriously biased and innacurate anyway. They are meant to provide support for the MSM views. They do not provide accurate understanding of what is really going on.

If you don't like the Church, please by all means leave.

Rather - If you don't like the Church, please by all means leave. educate yourself in the true teachings of Holy Mother Church (read the Catechism), humbly ponder the reasons, go to confession and come back to Her in faith.

fixed it. That's really what we all want

Same pathetic polling of ANYONE who even remotely identifies as a Catholic (parents were Catholic, best friend was Catholic, went to RC school, was baptized as a baby, etc.)

Poll the faithfully practicing Catholics, and you get a drastically different story.

Catholics in the United States want to change the church to suit their life style and beliefs which are not biblical. These same people polled probably never attend church.

Those that call themselves Catholic like Biden and Pelosi that support abortion, contraception, gay marriage, and all manor of sinful evil behaviors that are against life, against marriage and the family, and are apposed to God and the Gospel message. No, these people are not Catholic and already left the church and have no right to claim to be Catholic in any poll.

These "Catholics" are the ones that go to church on Christmas and Easter, never support the church and then complain because they can't get a good seat. They're also the ones who leave right after communion.

Let's all not forget this is a Washington Compost poll.

I think the technology is there to poll people to determine moral truth on the fly. Maybe restrict the polling to current political, academic and entertainment elite. Send updates to people’s iPhones, so they can be reassured that their moral choices are the currently most popular ones. Is that what a “modern church” would be like?

The Church follows the teachings of Jesus Christ not public opinion polls.

My old Baltimore Catechism listed an excessive reliance on "Public Opinion" as a violation of the First Commandment. "Public Opinion" is not God; "Public Opinion" does not determine truth; Truth is not subject to a popular vote.

The Church does not look to "Public Opinion", or to popular votes at annual conferences to determine Truth.

Protestantism, OTOH, is the poster child for determining (supposed) "truth" by popular sentiment.

The polling of Americans was done in 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012.

With ONE exception (2004), a majority of Americans who could be bothered to vote, voted for a communist.

Are you an American, ansel12?

Yes?

That makes you part of a group that continuously and consistently votes for communists.

Congratulations!

To all, I had meant to add that the MSM really wants the Catholic church to officially change, and all conservative Prots as well, but as for the accuracy of polls, as seen by the supplementary provided link , survey after survey (including Catholics sponsored ones) year after year has shown that Catholics are substantially liberal overall, and typically much more than their evangelical counterparts, including weekly Catholic attended (search weekly).

Some have assumed that i was a liberal Catholic and posted this as furthering change, and suggested i leave, but i left over 25 years ago and am a conservative evangelical, well known to most RC FR apologists here. And have lived in predominately Catholic and liberal areas all my life, and seek the salvation of all, no matter what they are, while being quite conscious of my own need for better holiness of heart and in deed.

Hmmmm ... The above graphic is from 2007.

Maybe the majority should quit finding minorities to scapegoat.

More data here

Your entire premise, that somehow it's all the Catholics' fault, is simply absurd. Worse, your attempt to divide folks into groups, and imply that each group votes overwhelmingly in a particular way, is deceptive and erroneous. Worse, you ignore overlaps between groups. If you think "homosexual" and "protestant" are mutually exclusive, from the POV of demographics, you're dead wrong and your analysis is worthless.

But that's OK ... you keep up with the garbage statistics and worthless analysis. You only discredit yourself.

While it is typical of conservative Catholics to consider the liberal ones as non-Catholics, the reality is that Rome treats them as members in life and in death, even notorious public sinners which canon law speaks of causing scandal, such as Teddy K and Chavez .
