Who Says Catholics Don't Know the Bible? Nuns Win Big for Charity on Bible Game Show (VIDEO)

You've got to love the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist!
They just appeared on The American Bible Challenge hosted by Jeff Foxworthy (Game Show Network).
And won.
Who says Catholics don't know the Bible? ; )

You've got to love the honesty of the sister who insisted on re-doing the fork flip. Even Foxworthy was clearly surprised by that!
These were the same nuns that appeared on Oprah. (See below).
The National Catholic Register explained that they
...faced off against Team Preachin Divas, a group of women dedicated to inner-city outreach in Oakland, Calif., and Team Anointed Ink, a group of Texas-based tattoo artists who cover up questionable body art with religious symbols.
The top prize? $100,000 for their charity of choice.
What did they think of Team Anointed Ink?
We met the other teams, and it was beautiful to see their love for the Scripture and their dedication to Christ, Sister Maria said.
A little more on their order:
Founded in 1997 with just four sisters in Ann Arbor, Mich., the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist has now grown to 120 members. The orders habited sisters are specially committed to Mary, the Blessed Sacrament and the New Evangelization.
By working to set aside money for the founding members retirement, the younger sisters are seeking to show their gratitude for the women who have really spent themselves in providing a community and a home for us.
If they hadnt said Yes to Gods call, what would we have done?
And, yes, they love Scripture.
Although she and her teammates were chosen to compete because of their knowledge of the Bible, Sister Maria said preparing for the show gave them an even deeper appreciation of Scripture. She explained that Catholics tend to focus on the basic idea and the content of sacred Scripture rather than the small details.
While that aspect of the Bible is important, she said, the Church Fathers didnt feel that way. The Fathers of the Church, she said, memorized the Scriptures, and they knew all the details, and they found them all significant.
In their study of the Bible leading up to the show and even more so after the show Sister Maria said she and her teammates have come to look at the Scriptures in a different way by learning to appreciate the details more. She added, I hope that encourages some Catholics to rededicate themselves to discovering the riches of the Scriptures.

“Catholics do not read the Bible” = Myth #1 perpetrated by protestants
“Catholics worship Mary” = Myth #2 perpetrated by protestants
“Catholics worship statues = Myth #3 perpetrated by protestants
If protestants would all first read the Catechism of the Catholic Church to learn what we DO believe before they go around telling people what they THINK we believe, perhaps they would not be so guilty of spreading lies.

Who Says Catholics Don't Know the Bible? People who believe, in spite of all evidence to the contrary, that anyone who reads the Bible will agree with them, 100%, about what the Bible means.

Who says Catholics don't know the Bible? ; ) Shortly after my better half became a Catholic convert, we were invited to eat out with another couple. We went back to their house and played Bible Trivia. This other couple was Baptist and I was sure that they would win. You know, a Catholic and a new convert would not stand a chance against a couple of Bible-reading Baptists.
Well, we beat their pants off. Twice. Surprised the heck out of me. We didn't rub it in.

This is very similar to the recent surveys done of Americans' political leanings. When given policy positions, people overwhelmingly support the Republican position... until they are told it is the Republican position. Protestants have the same reflexive revulsion for the Church they don't understand. What happens to Protestants who truly try to understand what they think is their enemy? Many become Catholic.

For the most part the Catholics I know couldn’t locate Genesis 1:1 in their Bible.

Exactly. These look like true nuns(unlike the liberal pro-abortion whiners that the mainstream media always find sthe ability to give air time to) who I as a Protestant have no trouble believing they read and study the Bible. But do many rank and file Roman Catholic laymen(i.e., the ones who voted for Obama) know it?

Wimpy Catholics who say that because we don’t memorize verses that we don’t know the Bible.
Nowhere does it state in the Catechism tha twe should memorize verses.

But do many rank and file Roman Catholic laymen(i.e., the ones who voted for Obama) know it? If they go to Church every Sunday, as the Church commands (deliberately missing weekly Mass is considered to be a mortal sin), then they will get the high points of the Bible in a 3 year cycle.
Daily mass attendees will receive the entire Bible in a three year cycle (with some minor exceptions).
This is why Catholics often draw a line between Mass-attending and non-Mass-attending Catholics. This divide correlates with voting patterns.
Generally, Mass attendees know the stories from hearing them so often, but couldn't tell you the chapter and verse.
In the old days, Catholics raised in Catholic schools were very well catechized. Today, they are not.
My daughter was homeschooled using 60-year-old Catholic textbooks. She is now wrapping up her senior year. She has a very good knowledge of the Bible, Church history, Catholic apologetics, and introductory Aristotelian philosophy.
At her confirmation classes, she was the only student who could answer the priest's very basic questions. It was very disheartening, but not much different from the state of affairs when I was at the same age, 30 years ago.

At least we protestants don't have to think about the really important things in life...like what coler the pope's shoes are!

If FR Catholics were like the ones I know personally, I wouldn't have any Catholic friends and I have several. I have one drop out...turned Methodist having done Catholic schools and the whole bit.
Truth is....we don't discuss religion because nobody is interested in discussing it! It's isn't avoided...just doesn't matter.

I think the Catholics you know don’t resemble the ones from FR because FR has a high percentage of curmudgeons and people who enjoy stirring the pot, if you will. Much higher than in the general public.
And also, I’m guessing that if you met them in person, they might not phrase things the way they do in print, to a faceless audience. I think some might be more, um, Christian in person.
Personally, I grew up around curmudgeons and opinionated blow-hards. Doesn’t bother me. I know they have a good soul in there somewhere, or they would be posting on DU, right?

Nowhere does it state in the Catechism tha twe should memorize verses. Your catechism, eh??? That's why you should dump your catechism...
Psa 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee
How do you know what sin not to commit if you don't have the verses memorized???
Psa 119:54 Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.
Psa 119:55 I have remembered thy name, O LORD, in the night, and have kept thy law.
Psa 119:56 This I had, because I kept thy precepts.
Psa 119:57 CHETH. Thou art my portion, O LORD: I have said that I would keep thy words.
Psa 119:58 I intreated thy favour with my whole heart: be merciful unto me according to thy word.
How will you keep the precepts if you don't know what they are???
God speaks to us thru the scriptures...How can you even know God if you don't know what he says to you???
Jer 15:16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.
And no, just like the phrase, 'eat my flesh', Jeremiah did not eat the words of God...Jeremiah however did consume the words...He put them into his memory and in his heart...
Jer 20:9 Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.
These are just a few verses telling us that it is very wise to remember what God says to us...Regardless of what your catechism says or doesn't say...
In fact, the more scriptures you memorize, the less significant your catechism will become...

Oh, yes, I’m sure he was in the habit of spewing out all sorts of untruths, opinions based on “feelings” and propaganda:
After earning high school valedictorian honors at Spalding Institute in Peoria in 1913, Sheen was educated at St. Viator College in Bourbonnais, Illinois, attended Saint Paul Seminary in Minnesota before his ordination on September 20, 1919,[1] then followed that with further studies at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C..[7][9] His youthful appearance was still evident on one occasion when a local priest asked Sheen to assist as altar boy during the celebration of the Mass.[7]
Sheen earned a doctorate in philosophy at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium in 1923.[9] While there, he became the first American ever to win the Cardinal Mercier award for the best philosophical treatise.[7] In 1924 Sheen pursued further studies in Rome earning a Sacred Theology Doctorate at the Pontificium Collegium Internationale Angelicum, the future Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Angelicum.[10]

That is the most frightening premise of the religious debates into which Americans enter.
So many Catholics, certainly their debate opponents, are unaware that the teaching of the Cath. Church is that we are judged by what we know and what sacraments we’ve received.
It’s why we don’t, as opposed to popular opinion, believe that people who are not Catholic are not damned.
We are, however, very concerned for people who avow, ‘former’ Catholic status. There is no such thing.

Let alone, that Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen has been pronounced 'Venerable."Archbishop Fulton Sheen Becomes "Venerable"
by Edward Pentin Thursday, June 28, 2012 10:05 AM

http://www.fultonsheen.com/
Servant of God Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen is now Venerable after the Vatican announced today that Benedict XVI had signed a decree recognising that the archbishop heroically lived Christian virtues.
The announcement of the decree marks a significant step in the canonization cause of Peoria, Ill.-born Archbishop Sheen (1895-1979), the Emmy award-winning televangelist whose program, "Life is Worth Living," was broadcast from 1951 to 1957.
The Vatican now has to recognise a miracle has occurred through his intercession for him to be beatified, the penultimate step to canonization. Alleged miracles have been reported, which are now being assessed by experts in Rome.
For little over a year, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints has been examining his cause based on volumes of Archbishop Sheens life gathered in his home diocese of Peoria. The Congregation will have first examined if the archbishop had shown evidence of the three theological virtues of faith, hope and charity, and then the four cardinal virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance.

which is correct.
As women charge around, pushing their way to the top of the men’s ladder, no one is preventing the destruction of our society and culture. They have so much power, yet they don’t use it, having been duped by the enemy into believing that they have no power.

Everything in the lectionary together covers almost 89% of the gospels, almost 57% of the rest of the nt, and not quite 13% of the OT (not including Psalms)—as the OT is huge, the overall average is only about 27%—and as there are a number of readings that almost never come up (e.g. there are many options for the Vigil of Pentecost, and even though I’ve been a daily Mass goer for several decades, I’ve never seen a Vigil of Pentecost actually celebrated), the lectionary, for practical purposes, tops out at about 25%. Catholics need to read the Bible outside of Mass—see Verbum Domini and about a dozen other documents. (Disclaimer—I do teach theology with an emphasis on scripture, so I do have a stake in the discussion).

One further note, in Benedict XVI’s address of the 14 of February to the Priests of Rome, he noted the following with regards to the Lectionary in the Vernacular, the money portion being that ongoing formation is necessary—the Liturgy is not meant to be sufficient in this area:
Then there were the principles: intelligibility, instead of being locked up in an unknown language that is no longer spoken, and also active participation. Unfortunately, these principles have also been misunderstood. Intelligibility does not mean banality, because the great texts of the liturgy even when, thanks be to God, they are spoken in our mother tongue are not easily intelligible, they demand ongoing formation on the part of the Christian if he is to grow and enter ever more deeply into the mystery and so arrive at understanding. And also the word of God when I think of the daily sequence of Old Testament readings, and of the Pauline Epistles, the Gospels: who could say that he understands immediately, simply because the language is his own? Only ongoing formation of hearts and minds can truly create intelligibility and participation that is something more than external activity, but rather the entry of the person, of my being, into the communion of the Church and thus into communion with Christ....

“If protestants would all first read the Catechism of the Catholic Church to learn what we DO believe before they go around telling people what they THINK we believe, perhaps they would not be so guilty of spreading lies.”
OK I’ll do that.
CCC 966, “Finally the Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, so that she might be the more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror of sin and death.” You conceived the living God and, by your prayers, will deliver our souls from death.”
Queen over all things by whose prayers souls are delivered from death?
CCC 721, “Mary, the all-holy ever-virgin Mother of God, is the masterwork of the mission of the Son and the Spirit in the fullness of time....Mary is acclaimed and represented in the liturgy as the “Seat of Wisdom.”
Mary the All Holy ever-virgin Mother of God who is the Seat of Wisdom?
CCC 975,”We believe that the Holy Mother of God, the new Eve, Mother of the Church, continues in heaven to exercise her maternal role on behalf of the members of Christ.”
The mother of the church? Move aside, Jesus!
Holy Mother of God, Holy Virgin of virgins, Mother of the Church, Mother of divine grace, Mother most pure, Mother most chaste, Mother inviolate, Mother undefiled, Mother most amiable, Mother admirable, Mother of good counsel, Mother of mercy, Virgin most prudent, Virgin most powerful, Virgin most merciful, Virgin most faithful, Mirror of justice, Seat of wisdom, Mystical rose, Tower of David, Tower if ivory, Ark of the covenant, Gate of heaven, Morning star, Health of the sick, Refuge of sinners, Comfort of the afflicted, Help of Christians, Queen of Angels, Queen of Patriarchs, Queen of Prophets, Queen of Apostles, Queen of Martyrs, Queen of Confessors, Queen of Virgins, Queen of all Saints, Queen conceived without original sin, Queen assumed into heaven, Queen of the most holy Rosary, Queen of families, Queen of peace. (vatican.va/special/rosary/documents/litanie-lauretane_en.html)
Uhhuh.
“Mary is the intermediary through whom is distributed unto us this immense treasure of mercies gathered by God, for mercy and truth were created by Jesus Christ. Thus as no man goeth to the Father but by the Son, so no man goeth to Christ but by His Mother.” (Vatican Website: Encyclical of Pope Leo 13th on the Rosary, Octobri Mense, Pope Leo 13th, 1903-1914)
Mary the mediator between man and Christ?
“Let us turn our gaze to Mary, Christs first disciple, Spouse of the Holy Spirit and Mother of the Church, who was with the Apostles at the first Pentecost, so that she will help us to learn from her fiat docility to the voice of the Spirit.” (Holy Father’s speech for the world congress of ecclesial movements and new communities.)
A bone for the Mormons!
CCC 972 After speaking of the Church, her origin, mission, and destiny, we can find no better way to conclude than by looking to Mary. In her we contemplate what the Church already is in her mystery on her own “pilgrimage of faith,” and what she will be in the homeland at the end of her journey. There, “in the glory of the Most Holy and Undivided Trinity,” “in the communion of all the saints,” the Church is awaited by the one she venerates as Mother of her Lord and as her own mother.
Looking to Mary?
Hmmm. Yea, you’re right, Catholics don’t worship Mary at all. Whoever could have given me THAT idea!? LOL

The unity is that of Truth, not of error.

(15) And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? (16) And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
