New Haven, Conn., Mar 28, 2013 / 12:02 am (CNA/EWTN News).- About 60 percent of Americans say they intend to go to church for Easter Sunday, with 70 percent of Catholic Americans and 92 percent of practicing Catholics saying they will attend services.

“The survey shows that Easter remains an important part of the lives of most Americans,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson of the Knights of Columbus, which commissioned the survey.

Anderson said March 27 that the celebration of Easter is “of great importance” to American Catholics, as is the spiritual preparation of Lent that helps Catholics to “lead a better life.”

The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion survey also asked about Americans' Lenten practices.

About 80 percent of practicing Catholic respondents said they intended to observe Lent through the traditional Catholic practice of going without something or doing something differently. About 62 percent of all Catholics said the same. Only 33 percent of all American adults said they took special action during Lent.

The numbers of Americans and Catholics who said they planned to attend Easter services declined slightly from a 2009 survey from the Marist Institute.

The Marist Poll survey of 2,000 Americans was conducted March 2-5. Its respondents included 515 Catholics. It claims a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points for Americans respondents and plus or minus 4.3 percentage points for Catholics respondents.

The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic fraternal charitable organization with over 1.8 million members worldwide.

If only it would be important every week and not just on Christmas and Easter perhaps we could reverse the moral rot.

I call BS. It would reflect in our culture if it were important. Easter is nothing more than morphine drip to assuage our guilt before God.

No, to correct you, Easter is when Christians REMEMBER the greastest miracle ever done by Jesus, by rising from the dead.

There are droves of Christmas and Easter only Catholics (and I assume protestants as well). It always amazes me, on those days, how many people I see at mass that I have never seen before... and I usually recognize about 80% of the people on a given Sunday. The good thing is usually it inspires a handful to come back to communion regularly.

If you are referring to the thousands who never attened church other than Christmas, Easter, for weddings and funerals, I agree.

And then they go and vote for Obama and gay marriage!! SAD.

The reason is intimately tied into wolfman's comment:

If only it would be important every week and not just on Christmas and Easter perhaps we could reverse the moral rot.

Today is Good Friday, the day on which our Lord asked that we begin a novena. Jesus asked that the Feast of the Divine Mercy be preceded by a Novena to the Divine Mercy which would begin on Good Friday. He gave St. Faustina an intention to pray for on each day of the Novena, saving for the last day the most difficult intention of all, the lukewarm and indifferent of whom He said:

"These souls cause Me more suffering than any others; it was from such souls that My soul felt the most revulsion in the Garden of Olives. It was on their account that I said: 'My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass Me by.' The last hope of salvation for them is to flee to My Mercy."

Pray for these souls and ask the Holy Spirit to move their hearts!

Ever gone to a black church on Easter? You’d believe It’s just an excuse to buy new dresses and suits. Some still have the stench of alcohol on them from the night before. Why do I bring this up? It’s one of O’s major outing blocs.

Right...it’s important in a different reason for the ones who attend weekly services. The others - it’s important so they can assuage their guilt and more importantly dress up the kids all cute and go on voting for marriage-killing, abortion-loving leftist...ummm I mean “social justice” politicians.

Crowd at our parish last night. Father reminded us to leave in silence and for the most part we did until out the doors and there, between the doors and the parking lot everyone crowded and was talking with great joy and animation. I heard one teenage boy tell his friend, this is the Mass that the really Catholic Catholics go to. We did have brass and kettle drums and of course incense and sang all the verses and Tantum Ergo. Good times.

You missed my point. The proposition that "Easter is important to Americans" is false. I say no, because reality doesn't bare it out. If it were important, we wouldn't have a pro-murder President for the 2nd consecutive time, and we damn sure wouldn't be debating the issue on same-sex marriage.

Now, if we change the proposition to read "Americans feel it is important to attend religious activities twice a year", then I would agree.

Than I have a question, if you say “no”, why is the miniseries of the History Channel’s “The Bible” produced HUGH RATINGS of tv viewership?

There is a hunger and thirst in America friend.

I'm not debating that. So what if the History channel has a top performing show? As compared to the dreck that is on TV now? It's actually predictable; people are always looking for something new.

Jerusalem welcomed Jesus on Palm Sunday with open arms. He had wide appeal. Then they crucified Him when they sided with their traditional religious rulers. So much for ratings.

We murdered over 55 million babies since Jan 1973. Now we are considering buggery to be OK on a national level. How about justice? We have increasingly become softer on the application of justice. The Bible clearly supports action over words or outward appearances as an indication of salvation (true conversion).

There isn't empirical data supporting the proposition that Jesus is important to our nation. It's superficial; as plastic as our nation.

As for me, I regret carrying a rifle for this nation, wasting my youth on a citizenry that doesn't know whether it is shot, screwed, powder-burned, or snake bit.

Wow .. what a beautiful experience. Did they have brass and kettle drums at the Last Supper ; - )

Our pastor, imported from Lebanon, delivered one of his best homilies ... ever. He spoke of the Eucharist .. of God's infinite love for us and then told us to go home and look in the mirror. The image reflected is that of Divine Love.

Consider what has been presented on tv over the years, this is an IMPROVEMENT, the History Channel presenting the tv miniseries, “ The Bible”.

Also take into consideration that, the Bible, including that very first Holy Week, has been told and re-told over and over again. This is why the Bible is FOREVER the #1 best-selling book for all times.

The events of Holy Week is why the Christian faith grew and spread, with the help of the Holy Spirit.

Pray for the repentence and conversion of America.
