Gonzaga Denies Knights of Columbus Student Group Because it’s Catholic
The Cardinal Newman Society ^ | 4/5/13 | Tim Drake

Spokane's Gonzaga University has denied a Knights of Columbus group application to be recognized as an official student organization. Those seeking the status were notified of the University’s decision at a meeting on March 7.

The group was notified of the decision by Dean of Students Kassi Kain and Assistant Director for Student Activities Dave Rovick.

“The Knights of Columbus, by their very nature, is a men’s organization in which only Catholics may participate via membership,” says a letter obtained by The Cardinal Newman Society written by Sue Weitz, Vice President for Student Life. “These criteria are inconsistent with the policy and practice of student organization recognition at Gonzaga University, as well as the University’s commitment to non-discrimination based on certain characteristics, one of which is religion.”

The letter continued:

The discussion at the meeting touched on formation of a Catholic Daughters student organization at Gonzaga. Such a group would address the gender exclusivity issue. However, it would not address the requirement that all members of a student Knights of Columbus group must be Catholic.

Individuals who spoke with The Cardinal Newman Society only on condition of anonymity explained that the group has been stalled by the administration for the entire academic year. Efforts were made by students to apply for official student group status beginning in September. The group was told they would have a response by November. The group wasn’t notified of the University’s decision until March.

Weitz did not return the call from The Cardinal Newman Society seeking comment on the decision.

One Knights of Columbus member told The Cardinal Newman Society that other University organizations, including club sports, currently limit membership and exclude people.

alumni

If you recall, there was a big alumni push for former graduates of Notre Dame to cease their support of ND back when they invited Obortion O to speak there.

“And who should stop giving them money?”

Alumni??? At least those alums who went there and may be sending or considering sending their own kids there precisely because it is supposed to be a Catholic college?

Unlike state colleges, private colleges are very dependent on alumni donations/bequests. They very likely receive substantial support also from Catholic organizations.

My opinion would be that the early exit of their #1 seed team in the NCAA tournament will impact donations far more than this.

Go Wichita St. Shockers! Early in the schools history students would work to bring in the wheat harvest to have money for school. Hence the “ Shockers”!

That is to say that the alumni is not supporting the decision?

I'm trying to get more info on this. GU has a service group affiliated with the KOC, and they call themselves the Knights. During my years there, it was composed of men in their sophomore year.

I graduated a long time ago, so this wasn't even on my radar screen until someone posted this on the "Online Crosby Center" this morning.

The new President is too PC for me...Fr. Bob Spitzer was the best. Dr. McCullough's never had a job outside of GU, so he has no perspective on the real world.

The school's leadership showed a blind eye by allowing Angelo Mozilo (of Countrywide fame) to serve on the Board of Trustees.

I only have fond memories of my time there, but they're starting to pi$$ me off.

Do they also deny muslim groups?

Do they also deny women's groups? If I were a male at that University, I would try to join an all female group on campus, and then sue the University if I was refused.

I received a world class education there. GU still has one of the finest ROTC programs in the country, and they always attract dozens of students who win those scholarships. I think the strong presence of ROTC keeps GU from going off the cliff culturally.

My two oldest kids wanted to stay closer to home, and I think I scared them off with my stories of how hard I worked to graduate in 4 years. I changed my major to Public Accounting the spring of my sophomore year, necessitating taking a load of 21 hours three of my last four semesters.

My youngest son (11) is a good Texas boy, and is adamant about matriculating at UT-Austin. LOL! In a way, that's good, because he'll need to finish in the top 8% of his class to qualify.

Is there a “Black Students Union” on Campus?

Are white folks allowed to join?(Would they even want to?)

The K 0f C is more than just a Fraternity for Catholic Men. It is also a powerful voice for the unborn.

Can’t have THAT on Campus!

Sister named Kandi.

LOL, no doubt. I would never give my daughter a name where she could be mistaken for an exotic dancer.

Withholding donations is one way alums have always expressed their displeasure at campus doings. It’s not likely that Gonzaga alums would think much of this decision. And, it’s not as if paying the significant ‘student activity fees’ is optional.

It is beyond satire that many of these historic "Catholic" universities even pretend to be Catholic or even Christian any longer. Political Correctness is the rule of law at these places. The Hard Left has subverted everything.

I was never a member of any KoC organization, but all I have ever seen any of them do is express their faith by doing good works for people in need regardless of race or religion. Much like the Masons who I have also never been a part of. That is just not good enough for the PC Police of the Hard Left.

One question. Does the Black Students Association at any of these schools have any token non-black members? How about the Hispanic groups? Do Sororities need to admit male members? Does the Islamic Student association have any Christian or Jewish or Buddhist members?

A supposedly Catholic school that will not allow a very traditional and highly respected Catholic organization. At one time I would have never believed it possible. Today, I have come to expect this kind of crap from the corrupt hard left creeps who have take over all of our instituions of higher learning.

Jesuits always point out, they are NOT Catholic, they are Jesuit. (Brings new meaning to the joke, “is the Pope Catholic?”
