Condolences to the Chavez family
Lutheran Core ^ | 10 April AD 2013 | Bishop John Bradosky

Our hearts are broken as we ask for your prayers for our friend and colleague, Mark Chavez, on the tragic loss of his youngest son, Kevin, on Monday, April 8, 2013 [in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania]. This message from Bishop Bradosky of the NALC will share what we know about the situation at this time:

Dear Friends,

It is with tremendous sadness and grief that I write to inform you of the tragic death of Kevin Chavez, the youngest son of Pastor Mark Chavez and Jocelyn. Kevin was 19 years old and was on his way home from a college course. It appears that he stopped not far from their home and was out of the car when he was struck by a car. (The driver of that car did not stop.) He died from those injuries. Mark has been in touch with his family, many of whom are still at the hospital. The coroner and the police are involved with the investigation. [The local news station is wgal.com.]

We were together with him at the Canadian Theological Conference when he received the news. We spent time praying with him, insured that he could get back home as soon as possible, and drove him to a hotel close to Calgary Airport. No words seem adequate in conversation or in prayer to express the helplessness and loss. Our only source of consolation is Christ, His powerful presence and the assurance that His Grace is always sufficient, more than enough to sustain Mark, Jocelyn, their family and all of us who grieve with them.

Please pray for them, encourage your family and congregation to do the same. As I receive more information I will be sure to pass it on to you.

In Christ, John Bishop John F. Bradosky North American Lutheran Church

Rev. Mark Chavez serves as an assitant to Bishop Bradosky as Secretary of the North American Lutheran Church (NALC).

Autopsy results on Kevin were inconclusive. The blunt force truama may have been caused by falling from a silo (his cell phone was found atop a silo) or by being struck by a vehicle.

The Requiem liturgy will be held at Christ Lutheran, Elizabethtown PA on Saturday April 14.

Pr. Chavez is my personal friend.

So very sorry, Lightman. Unthinkable, in earthly terms. Unknowable, in spiritual terms, until they are all reunited farther along.

Condolences and prayers for the family and friends like yourself and others.
