Putin: Nothing Good About Wearing Hijabs to School

Moscow, April 25, Interfax - The wearing of hijabs to school is not traditional even in ethnic regions of Russia, President Vladimir Putin said, answering a question in the Direct Line on Thursday.

"There is nothing good about it. True, there are peculiarities in ethnic republics but what you speak about is not an ethnic peculiarity but a demonstration of the known attitude to religion," Putin said.

"There has never been such a tradition in our country, in Islamic regions," he said.

The wearing of hijabs is prohibited by law in certain Islamic countries," Putin said.

"I believe that our country can and should restore school uniforms. That is already being done and I hope the regions will not forget this. I hope they will introduce these uniforms in the most active way," the president said.

Totally aside from the hijab/no hijab issue, school uniforms are great!

It’s still the norm in most of Asia, right through university. As is banning of all forms of jewelry for kids at school. Saves a huge amount of hassle, wasted energy dealing with worries over peer pressure over clothes, and also money.

I think these woman are being fooled if they think a hijab makes them look more modest. If this post on the subject from another blog can be believed, it is a religious statement.

and i can say since i have worn it, no man talks to me with disrespect and tehy dont approach me unless they ahve a good reason, so they dont coem chat me up or wolf whistle as they used to. so i get respect, and there is now barrier between us. it also protection from sexual harrasment and i havnt experinced any of that since i wore my hijab. before that i used to at work but now nothing. it works, it protects me, and it brings me closer to allah, also a constent remidner of who i am, a muslimah, and a remeinder of allah, so in way a form of worship to allah the almighty.

She is a beautiful young woman, and on a certain level, I can understand why she wants to avoid men leering at her.

It’s a sad state of affairs when some women feel the need to wear this type of clothing to avoid unwanted advances. There was a time when gentlemen protected women from such things.

I just wish her attire didn’t come with all of the baggage, so to speak; she is basically subjugating herself to the men in her life.
