A Reformation theory that God ceases to impute to a sinner the guilt of one's sins because the merits of Christ are imputed to one in justification. The theory was condemned by the Council of Trent, which declared that, through justification, the sinner is not merely no longer considered sinful (because of Christ's imputed merits) but becomes a child of God, possessed of sanctifying grace and having a right to heaven.

The theory was condemned by the Council of Trent, which declared that, through justification, the sinner is not merely no longer considered sinful (because of Christ's imputed merits) but becomes a child of God, possessed of sanctifying grace and having a right to heaven.

For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was imputed to him for righteousness. (Romans 4:3)

Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. (Romans 4:8)

Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. (Galatians 3:6)

To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. (II Cor. 5:19)

We are made righteous through faith in Jesus Christ. We are justified because God made Christ, who knew no sin, to be sin for us; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. (II Cor. 5:21) God does not impute the penalty for our sin against us when we receive the gift of eternal life through faith. This does NOT mean, however, that God winks at sin or doesn't care when we fail. He disciplines us as a good father would but there is nothing we can do to undo our new birth. When we are born again by believing in Christ, we are sealed with the Holy Spirit - who is the guarantee of our inheritance - and he will never leave us, forsake us, cast us out or lose a one of us. Christ's righteousness IS imputed to us and when God views us, he sees the righteousness of Christ and we are found in him, not having a righteousness of our own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ--the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith (Philippians 3:9).
