Israeli president Shimon Peres has officially invited Pope Francis to Israel, it has been revealed after the pair met at the Vatican.
According to a statement issued by Vatican spokesman, Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, the Pope would “be happy to go to the Holy Land,” although there are currently no firm plans in place for such a trip.
The statement said that during a meeting on Tuesday, Peres and Pope Francis discussed the political and social situation in the Middle East and expressed hopes for a resumption of negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians so that “with courageous decisions and availability on both sides, as well as with the support of the international community, an agreement that respects the legitimate aspirations of the two peoples can be reached.”
A resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would contribute to peace and stability throughout the region, the Vatican said. The two leaders also spoke about “the conflict that plagues Syria” and the need for a political solution in Syria that favours reconciliation and dialogue.
Peres met the Pope in the library of the Apostolic Palace; with the assistance of an interpreter the two spoke privately for about half an hour before the Israeli president introduced members of his entourage to the Pope and the two leaders exchanged gifts.

I hope to revisit some day.
I lived in the middle east for five years (long time ago) and learned that one doesn't wait for peace there to travel there and see the WONDERFUL sites. There will never be peace there so one must just go there when one has the time, money and opportunity.
I remember visiting an Israeli employment agency in Jeruslem. There were three windows: B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. The gap between the two peoples there is just too wide to bridge--my read.
Really? That hits close to home because I have been unemployed and looking for work for over 3 years now, and I hold a Ph.D. and M.S. You don't happen to know if the Israelis accept non-Jew immigrants, do you?
Well, this will be interesting. I think Pope Francis could even turn the invitation down. Not the invite to Jerusalem, but the peace broker role.
If he accepts both, it will be interesting to see how he approaches it.
No, they do not accecpt non Jewish immigrants. They have an immigration problem that makes ours look like a drop in the bucket. And the illegal immigrants over there don’t just collect welfare, they have explosive tempers.

What happens is that they have rules about skills. For instance a Doctor from Russia has to go to medical school all over again. Until he learns medical in Hebrew, he works as a Janitor. Too many Russian “engineers” ago they changed the rules.
Now they have constant immigration from all over the world. The immigrants surrender their passports for two years and go on Israeli Aliah “welfare”. They get housing and intensive study hebrew lessons. One year later they are expected to get a job and support themselves.
Hebrew is hard. Jews are very smart people and are tough to boot. So many immigrants looking for jobs, so many Doctors sweeping streets that by the time your 45 good luck finding a job.
If you are lucky enough, and can stand the tough work enviroment, you might earn enough to live at the standards that Obama would call poverty. Life is VERY tough in Israel. And I would move back if I could.
I really liked Israel, love the Jewish people, and feel at home there now. And, you can buy a lighter without a booklet glued on it telling you not to set yourself on fire. Life is very real in Israel, as are the people. But they sure got nasty neighbors.

I often have the thought of what would Caiphas and Pilate think (among others) if they could be brought to our time for a quick visit. That the Vicar of Christ is the symbol of Rome and that the free nation of Israel (but a dream 2000 years ago) is defended by God through His “Christian” nations (at least in the near term) is something to really think about.
I SERIOUSLY doubt if you would be wanted over there.
I assume that you are Christian....oooo baaad. You would have a HECK of a time going to church. There are darn few over there. Just synagogues and mosques.
You wouldn't be treated badly. You would simply be ignored, an unnecessary entity in a land you don't belong in.
