Homeless Man Runs Contest To See Which Religion Gives Most
Creative Minority Report ^ | May 3, 2013 | Matthew Archbold

Posted on 05/03/2013 3:21:46 PM PDT by NYer

The HuffPo is gleefully reporting a story about a homeless man's stunt that attempts to shame people into giving him money.

In the picture, which has since gone viral on Reddit and Imgur, the man, who appears to be homeless or transient, is sitting on a sidewalk and holding a sign that reads, "Which religion cares the most about the homeless?" Arranged in front of him are eight small, plastic bowls and a hat, each labeled with different religions and filled with varying amounts of change. Although we can't say for sure how much money is shown in the photo, the bowls labeled "atheist" and "agnostic" seem to be the fullest.

Well that proves it right there. Atheists are just better people, I guess. At least that seems to be how it's being reported. The thing is, if I saw that dude with the bowls and the signs I'd see through it right away.

It's a weird thing. Atheists are always accusing Christians of saying they're better people except we never say that. But they do. Atheists are constantly saying they're smarter and better that Christians who are just being good to avoid hell while atheists are being good for goodness sakes.

I have a question though. What is "good" to an atheist? I never know how they come upon their definition. So many simply seem to adopt so much from Christianity in defining good.

But getting back to this dude. If I were walking by him I wouldn't give. It's a scam he's running. He's attempting to inspire some form of tribalism to increase giving. I'm not going to give money because the reputation of Christianity is on the line. I give to those who seem to need, not those who are playing an angle on me.

Kudos to the guy however for including atheism as a religion.

Anybody who gives out money/anything to those who do not work for it(includes majority of the so-called charities) are IDIOTS and deserve to have their money parted.

If I see a homeless, the chances are that the homeless is in such situation because of his own actions. Get off the streets you lazy bum!

This guy looks able-bodied, but I don’t know his medical history.

But he looks like he could walk onto any non-union construction site and ask the General (The General Contractor in charge) for work as a laborer and he would be hired for $12-$15 an hour and usually, all the OT he can handle.

Kinda preferred the homeless guy whose sign said, “Bet you can’t hit my nose with a quarter.”

Part of which may include addiction, in which case giving money may just feed the addiction.

A colleague of mine did the reverse of this experiment. She is a social worker and when she saw somebody holding up a sign saying they needed help she gave them the address of her agency and said if he would meet her there she would help him get a job. She has never had anybody take her up on it.

However, the mission has homeless people who come in because they’ve hit upon hard circumstances and some of them get help finding jobs and are fine after that.

So much depends on where the person is really at, and what their true intentions are. Really caring about a person would mean NOT giving money in some circumstances. So to judge the motivations of the people putting money in or not putting money in, you’d have to know why they did it. And the truer test would be for somebody to go to the various groups, explain their situation, and see who gives SMART, really helpful care, and who just does the easy thing to make them go away.

Well, maybe it is a measure of who gives for credit, but it strikes me there are a host of flavors of Christianity, and only one of Atheism. So did he add the Catholics and Protestants together and check the balance against the Muslims and Jews and Zoroastrians and Wiccans, or did he break down every little Christian group?

I give money to charities. I never give money to panhandlers. Enabling sin isn’t a christian virtue.

Maybe we should have a “panhandler tagging” program where they are tagged like animals and tracked and if they end up living in a nice house and are doing the “panhandle act”. Then arrest them for fraud!!!!

Because they are not only hurting the general goodwill of those who are giving but they are hurting the truly homeless who may actually need a handout...

Much better way to spend money and more satisfying.

Upon further review, his clothes, shoes and bags all appear to be in good shape. He doesn’t look like he’s missed many meals, invested several dollars in different colored markers, a roll of tape, paper, Subway sandwich, an Iced-Tea and has several other signs in the pack on his right, etc.

And that sure looks like a cell phone charger plugged into the wall behind the bag on the left side of the picture.

I would expect the bowl labeled “Christian” to be empty, for it is written in the Bible that “Thou shalt not put the Lord thy God to the test”. By that line of thinking, the bowl labeled with the “religion” FURTHEST from the true God should have the MOST money in it!!

: )

This needs no contest, the obvious answer is the Obama religion....granted, it isn’t his money, it is money he has stolen from you he is giving, but he still wins.

In my mind, he needed to break down the Christian category into several.

exactly right, i never hesitate to help, but i wouldn’t play this game, its a gimmick by someone who should have more important things to be concerned with than shameless manipulation of those more weak minded than himself,

the more easily duped would’ve fallen for it, so it wouldn’t surprise me as to which bowl is winning his lazy mans lotto,

“Just atheists trying to buy their way into heaven!”

I stole that idea from Bill Cosby.
