Saturday of the Fifth Week of Easter

 

Reading 1 Acts 16:1-10

Paul reached also Derbe and Lystra
where there was a disciple named Timothy,
the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer,
but his father was a Greek.
The brothers in Lystra and Iconium spoke highly of him,
and Paul wanted him to come along with him.
On account of the Jews of that region, Paul had him circumcised,
for they all knew that his father was a Greek.
As they traveled from city to city,
they handed on to the people for observance the decisions
reached by the Apostles and presbyters in Jerusalem.
Day after day the churches grew stronger in faith
and increased in number.

They traveled through the Phrygian and Galatian territory
because they had been prevented by the Holy Spirit
from preaching the message in the province of Asia.
When they came to Mysia, they tried to go on into Bithynia,
but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them,
so they crossed through Mysia and came down to Troas.
During the night Paul had a vision.
A Macedonian stood before him and implored him with these words,
“Come over to Macedonia and help us.”
When he had seen the vision,
we sought passage to Macedonia at once,
concluding that God had called us to proclaim the Good News to them.

Timothy joins Paul


[1] And he came also to Derbe and to Lystra. A disciple was there, named Timo-
thy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer; but his father was a Greek.
[2] He was well spoken of by the brethren at Lystra and Iconium. [3] Paul wanted
Timothy to accompany him; and he took him and circumcised him because of
the Jews that were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.

[4] As they went on their way through the cities, they delivered to them for ob-
servance the decisions which had been reached by the Apostles and elders who
were at Jerusalem. [5] So the churches were strengthened in the faith and they
increased in numbers daily.

[6] And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbid-
den by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. [7] And when they had come
opposite Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did
not allow them; [8] so, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas. [9] And a
vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing besee-
ching him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” [10] And when he
had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding
that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

Commentary:

1-3. At Lystra, a city which he evangelized during his first journey (cf. 14:6),
Paul meets a young Christian, Timothy, of whom he had received good reports.
His Jewish mother Eunice and his grandmother Lois were Christians, and Timo-
thy had received the faith from them.

Paul’s apostolic plans for Timothy, and the fact that, despite being Jewish
through his mother, he had not been circumcised, lead him to circumcise him:
everyone in the city knew he was a Jew and those who practised the Mosaic
Law might easily have regarded him as an apostate from Judaism, in which
case he would be unlikely to be an effective preacher of the Gospel to the Jews.

“He took Timothy,” St. Ephraem comments, “and circumcised him. Paul did not
do this without deliberation: he always acted prudently; but given that Timothy
was being trained to preach the Gospel to Jews everywhere, and to avoid their
not giving him a good hearing because he was not circumcised, he decided to
circumcise him. In doing this he was not aiming to show that circumcision was
necessary — he had been the one most instrumental in eliminating it — but to a-
void putting the Gospel at risk” (”Armenian Commentary, ad loc.”).

In the case of Titus, St. Paul did not have him circumcised (cf. Galatians 2:3-5);
which showed that he did not consider circumcision a matter of principle; it is
simply for reasons of pastoral prudence and common sense that he has Timothy
circumcised. Titus was the son of Gentile parents; to have circumcised him — at
a point when Paul was fighting the Judaizers — would have meant Paul giving up
his principles. However, the circumcision of Timothy, which takes place later, is
in itself something that has no relevance from the Christian point of view (cf.
Galatians 5:6, 15).

Timothy became one of Paul’s most faithful disciples, a most valuable associate
in his missionary work (cf. 17:14ff; 18:5; 19:22; 20:4; 1 Thessalonians 3:2; Ro-
mans 16:21) and the recipient of two of the Apostle’s letters.

4. The text suggests that all Christians accepted the decisions of the Council of
Jerusalem in a spirit of obedience and joy. They saw them as being handed down
by the Church through the Apostles and as providing a satisfactory solution to a
delicate problem. The disciples accept these commandments with internal and
external assent: by putting them into practice they showed their docility. Every-
thing which a lawful council lays down merits and demands acceptance by Chris-
tians, because it reflects, as the Council of Trent teaches, “the true and saving
doctrine which Christ taught, the Apostles then handed on, and the Catholic
Church, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, ever maintains; therefore, no one
should subsequently dare to believe, preach or teach anything different” (”De Ius-
tificatione”, Preface).

John Paul II called on Christians to adhere sincerely to conciliar directives when
he exhorted them in Mexico City to keep to the letter and the spirit of Vatican II:
“Take in your hands the documents of the Council. Study them with loving atten-
tion, in a spirit of prayer, to discover what the Spirit wished to say about the
Church” (”Homily in Mexico Cathedral”, 26 January 1979).

6. In Galatia Paul had the illness which he refers to in Galatians 4:13: “You know
that it was because of a bodily ailment that I preached the Gospel to you at first
...”: his apostolic zeal makes him turn his illness, which prevented him from mo-
ving on, to good purpose.

7. We are not told how the Holy Spirit prevented Paul from going to Bithynia. It
would have been through an interior voice or through some person sent by God.

Some Greek codices and a few translations say simply “Spirit” instead of “Spi-
rit of Jesus”, but really the two mean the same: cf. Philippians 1:19; Romans 8:
9; 1 Peter 1:11.

9. This vision probably took place in a dream: Acts tells us of a number of ins-
tances where God made His will known in that way (cf. 9:10, 12; 10:3, 17; 18:9;
22:17). Paul and his companions were convinced he had received a message
from God.

The vision is quite right to describe the preaching of the Gospel as help for Mace-
donia: it is the greatest help, the greatest benefit, a person or a country could be
given, an immense grace from God and a great act of charity on the part of the
preacher, preparing his listeners, as he does, for the wonderful gift of faith.

10. The conviction that Paul and his companions have about what they must do
is the way every Christian, called as he is at Baptism, should feel about his vo-
cation to imitate Christ and therefore be apostolic.

“All Christians”, Bl. John Paul teaches, “incorporated into Christ and His Church
by baptism, are consecrated to God. They are called to profess the faith which
they have received. By the Sacrament of Confirmation, they are further endowed
by the Holy Spirit with special strength to be witnesses of Christ and shares in
His mission of salvation. Every lay Christian is therefore an extraordinary work
of God’s grace and is called to the heights of holiness. Sometimes, lay men and
women do not seem to appreciate the full dignity and the vocation that is theirs
as lay people. No, there is no such thing as an ‘ordinary layman’, for all of you
have been called to conversion through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
As God’s holy people you are called to fulfill your role in the evangelization of the
world. Yes, the laity are ‘a chosen race, a holy priesthood’, also called to be ‘the
salt of the earth’ and ‘the light of the world’. It is their specific vocation and mis-
sion to express the Gospel in their lives and thereby to insert the Gospel as a
leaven into the reality of the world in which they live and work” (”Homily in Lime-
rick”, 1 October 1979).

Now the narrative moves into the first person plural (16:10-17; 20:5-8; 13-15; 21:
1-18; 27:1-28, 16). The author includes himself among St. Paul’s companions,
as an eyewitness of what he reports. Luke must have joined the missionaries at
Troas and then stayed behind in Philippi.

Me before it hated you. [19] If you were of the world, the world would love its own;
but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore
the world hates you. [20] Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not
greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you; if they
kept My word, they will keep yours also. [21] But all this they will do to you on
My account, because they do not know Him who sent Me.”

Commentary:

18-19. Jesus states that there can be no compromise between Him and the
world, the kingdom of sin: anyone who lives in sin abhors the light (cf. John 3:19-
20). This is why Christ is persecuted, and why the Apostles will be in their turn.
“The hostility of the perverse sounds like praise for our life”, St. Gregory says,
“because it shows that we have at least some rectitude if we are an annoyance
to those who do not love God; no one can be pleasing to God and to God’s ene-
mies at the same time. He who seeks to please those who oppose God is no
friend of God; and he who submits himself to the truth will fight against those
who strive against truth” (”In Ezechielem Homiliae”, 9).

  As they visited one town after another, they passed on the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem, with instructions to respect them.
  So the churches grew strong in the faith, as well as growing daily in numbers.
  They travelled through Phrygia and the Galatian country, having been told by the Holy Spirit not to preach the word in Asia. When they reached the frontier of Mysia they thought to cross it into Bithynia, but as the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them, they went through Mysia and came down to Troas.
  One night Paul had a vision: a Macedonian appeared and appealed to him in these words, ‘Come across to Macedonia and help us.’ Once he had seen this vision we lost no time in arranging a passage to Macedonia, convinced that God had called us to bring them the Good News.

Jesus, High Priest
 

We thank you, God our Father, for those who have responded to your call to priestly ministry.

Accept this prayer we offer on their behalf: Fill your priests with the sure knowledge of your love.

Open their hearts to the power and consolation of the Holy Spirit.

Lead them to new depths of union with your Son.

Increase in them profound faith in the Sacraments they celebrate as they nourish, strengthen and heal us.

Lord Jesus Christ, grant that these, your priests, may inspire us to strive for holiness by the power of their example, as men of prayer who ponder your word and follow your will.

O Mary, Mother of Christ and our mother, guard with your maternal care these chosen ones, so dear to the Heart of your Son.

Intercede for our priests, that offering the Sacrifice of your Son, they may be conformed more each day to the image of your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Pray a Rosary each day for our nation.

Pray the Rosary

1.  Sign of the Cross:  In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

2.  The Apostles Creed:  I BELIEVE in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

3.  The Lord's Prayer:  OUR Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

4. (3) Hail Mary:  HAIL Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and in the hour of our death. Amen. (Three times)

5. Glory Be:  GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Fatima Prayer: Oh, my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of your mercy.

Announce each mystery, then say 1 Our Father, 10 Hail Marys, 1 Glory Be and 1 Fatima prayer.  Repeat the process with each mystery.

End with the Hail Holy Queen:

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve! To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears! Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us; and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus!

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

May Devotion: Blessed Virgin Mary
The Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Grace

Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. Toward the end of the eighteenth century a zealous Jesuit priest, Father Lalomia, started among the students of the Roman college of his Society the practice of dedicating May to Our Lady. The devotion, which others had promoted in a small way, soon spread to other Jesuit Colleges and to the entire Latin church and since that time it has been a regular feature of Catholic life.

INVOCATIONS

Thou who wast a virgin before thy delivery, pray for us. Hail Mary, etc.

Saint John Vianney, better known as the Cure of Ars, when asked how long he had loved Mary, said: "I loved her almost before I could know her." In this prayer he expresses that love.
O thou most holy virgin Mary, who dost evermore stand before the most holy Trinity, and to whom it is granted at all times to pray for us to thy most beloved Son; pray for me in all my necessities; help me, combat for me, and obtain for me the pardon of all my sins. Help me especially at my last hour; and when I can no longer give any sign of the use of reason, then do thou encourage me, make the sign of the cross for me, and fight for me against the enemy. Blessed Marie-Leonie Paradis

Feast Day: May 04
Born: 1840 :: Died: 1912

Elodie Paradis was born in the village of L'Acadie in Quebec, Canada. Her parents were poor but good Catholics and they loved their little girl. When Elodie was nine, her parents wanted her to have the best education they could afford, so they sent her to a boarding school. The Sisters of Notre Dame warmly received their new student but Elodie and her family missed each other very much.

Mr. Paradis had a flour mill and although he worked hard, the mill did not make enough money to support his wife and children. He heard wonderful stories about large amounts of gold that was to be found in California. He was so worried about his family that he decided to go.

But in California, Mr. Paradis did not find the wealth he hoped for. When he returned to L'Acadie, he was shocked to find that his little Elodie had joined the convent to become a nun. She had entered the Holy Cross convent on February 21, 1854.

Mr. Paradis went to the convent and he begged his daughter to return home, but she really wanted to stay there. Finally, her father agreed and she took her vows as a nun in 1857.

Blessed Marie-Leonie taught school in different cities. She prayed and lived her life joyfully. As time went on, Sister Marie-Leonie was led by Jesus to begin a new religious order in the Church. The Little Sisters of the Holy Family were begun in 1880.

These loving sisters are committed to serving and caring for priests in the household. This helps the priest to carry out their important ministries without difficulty. The Little Sisters of the Holy Family now have sixty-seven convents in Canada, the United States, Rome and Honduras.

Although Mother Marie Leonie was weak and often sick, she worked for her sisters until the last few hours of her life. But she never stopped caring for God's people. She completed the book of rules she had written to help give her sisters the guidance they would need for their life.

On Friday, May 3, 1912. Mother Marie-Leonie said she felt very tired. She went to rest and died a few hours later. She was seventy-one years old.

Saturday of the Fifth Week of Easter

Old Calendar: St. Monica, widow; St. Florian (Hist)

According to the 1962 Missal of Bl. John XXIII the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, this was the feast of St. Monica, widow, Third Class. Her feast in the Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite is celebrated on August 27.

Historically today is the feast of St. Florian, a Roman military officer stationed at Noricum (Austria) who openly declared himself a Christian during the persecution of co-Emperor Diocletian.


St. Florian

The St. Florian commemorated in the Roman Martyrology on May 4th, was an officer of the Roman army, who occupied a high administrative post in Noricum, now part of Austria, and who suffered death for the Faith in the days of Diocletian. His legendary "Acts" state that he gave himself up at Lorch to the soldiers of Aquilinus, the governor, when they were rounding up the Christians, and after making a bold confession, he was twice scourged, half-flayed alive, set on fire, and finally thrown into the river Enns with a stone around his neck. His body, recovered and buried by a pious woman, was eventually removed to the Augustinian Abbey of St. Florian, near Linz. It is said to have been at a later date translated to Rome, and Pope Lucius III, in 1138, gave some of the saint's relics to King Casimir of Poland and to the Bishop of Cracow. Since that time, St. Florian has been regarded as a patron of Poland as well as of Linz, Upper Austria and of firemen. There has been popular devotion to St. Florian in many parts of central Europe, and the tradition as to his martyrdom, not far from the spot where the Enns flows into the Danube, is ancient and reliable. Many miracles of healing are attributed to his intercession and he is invoked as a powerful protector in danger from fire or water.

AUG. He said this to the whole Church which is often called the world; as God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself (2 Cor 5:19). The whole world then is the Church, and the whole world hates the Church. The world hates the world, the world in enmity, the world reconciled, the defiled world, the changed world. Here it may be asked, If the wicked can be said to persecute the wicked; e. g., if impious kings, and judges, who persecute the righteous, punish murderers and adulterers also, how are we to understand our Lord's words, If you were of the world, the world would love his own? In this way; The world is in them who punish these offenses, and the world is In them who love them. The world then hates its own so far as it punishes the wicked, loves its own so far as it favors them. Again, if it be asked how the world loves itself, when it hates the means of its redemption, the answer is, that it loves itself with a false, not a true love, loves what hurts it; hates nature, loves vice. Wherefore we are forbidden to love what it loves in itself; commanded to love what it hates in itself. The vice in it we are forbidden, the nature in it we are commanded, to love. And to separate us from this lost world, we are chosen out of it, not by merit of our own, for we had no merits to begin with, not by nature which was radically corrupt, but by grace: But because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

GREG. For the dispraise of the perverse, is our praise. There is nothing wrong in not pleasing those who do not please God. For no one can by one and the same act please God, and the enemies of God. He proves himself no friend to God, who pleases His enemy; and he whose soul is in subjection to the Truth, will have to contend with the enemies of that Truth.

AUG. Our Lord, in exhorting His servants to bear patiently the hatred of their world, proposes to them an example than which there can be no better and higher one, viz. Himself: Remember the word that I said to you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept My saying, they will keep yours also.

GLOSS. They observed it in order to calumniate it, as we read in the Psalms, The ungodly sees the righteousness .

For My Name's sake, i.e., in you they will hate Me, in you persecute Me, your word they will not keep, because it is mine. They who do these things for His name's sake are as miserable, as they who suffer them are blessed: except when they do them to the wicked as well; for then both they who do, and they who suffer, are miserable. But how do they do all these things for His name's sake, when they do nothing for Christ's name's sake, i.e., for justice sake? We shall do away with this difficulty, if we take the words as applying to the righteous; as if it were, All these things will you suffer from them, for My name's sake. The Word Among Us

Meditation: Acts 16:1-10

5th Week of Easter

We sought passage to Macedonia at once, concluding that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them. (Acts 16:10)

“Did you hear me? Were you even listening?” That sounds like something a teacher or parent would say, doesn’t it? But it’s not just children who need to learn the connection between hearing and listening. We may hear people talking all the time, but if we want a relationship with someone, we need to do some active listening as well. And nowhere is this more true than when it comes to our relationship with God.

When it comes to listening to God, the problem is, oftentimes, that we don’t always know what to listen for. That’s because God usually “speaks” in ways that don’t involve our ears. Add to that the fact that our own lack of expectation can make it hard for us to identify his voice when he does speak. Like schoolchildren everywhere, we haven’t yet learned the art of careful listening—and, like schoolchildren everywhere, we assume that our Father doesn’t have anything to say.

But the Book of Acts shows us that the apostles learned to listen to the Holy Spirit—and that we can learn as well. Because of their pioneering work as missionaries, Paul and his companions needed constant guidance from the Spirit. You can imagine that they learned from Peter and John and the other original disciples the habit of regular prayer, fellowship, and studying the Scriptures (Acts 2:42). But they also learned other ways like casting lots (1:26), being open to angelic guidance (8:26), and even taking their cue from visions (9:3; 10:11)!

Now, we may not experience visions and angels as Paul and Luke and the others did, but if we stay alert, we will see other signs. Of course we can expect to hear him through the words of Scripture and the Church. But we can also hear him speaking through our circumstances, through our Christian brothers and sisters, even through the beauty and majesty of his creation. God wants to teach us and to give us direction, and he will do this in many ways. So watch and listen today, and find out what God has to say to you.

“Holy Spirit, I believe that you want to speak to me. Teach me to listen to you.”

Broad Strokes and Bright Colours

Yesterday's passage from the Prologue of the Holy Rule contains elements of a baptismal catechesis. This should not surprise us, given that the monastic life, unlike later developments of consecrated life in the Church, was not established to address any special need or in response to a particular crisis as were, for example, the Dominicans (to combat heresy by contemplating and preaching truth), or the Jesuits (to be soldiers under obedience, ready at every moment to fight the Church's enemies and to carry the message of Christ the King to the remotest ends of the earth). Monastic life is, quite simply, the baptismal life writ with broad strokes and bright colours. It is an intensification of the Way lived by the Christians of the early Church as described in the Acts of the Apostles. For this reason, monastic life is the original vita apostolica (the apostolic life) insofar as it seeks to reproduce in every age the pattern left by the Apostles. Although individual monks may, under obedience, be called to cultivate certain specialized skills or fields of knowledge, Benedictine life, as such, has no specialization

And they were persevering in the doctrine of the apostles, and in the communication of the breaking of bread, and in prayers. And fear came upon every soul: many wonders also and signs were done by the apostles in Jerusalem, and there was great fear in all. And all they that believed, were together, and had all things common. Their possessions and goods they sold, and divided them to all, according as every one had need. And continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they took their meat with gladness and simplicity of heart; Praising God, and having favour with all the people. (Acts 2:42-47)

A Classic

I still put into the hands of every man who comes to the monastery to discern whether or not he may have a Benedictine vocation, the splendid old classic that was put into my hands so many years ago: The Ideal of the Monastic Life Found in the Apostolic Age by Dom Germain Morin, O.S.B. (1861-1946). Originally published in 1913, it has lost nothing of its value; it remains a clear and accessible exposition of Benedictine life in all its simplicity and grandeur.

In the Face of Christ Jesus

The monk is a man roused from sleep and called to stand on his two feet, as one risen from the tomb, in order to meet the gaze of the Father with the Son. The Word of God shakes him out of the cozy slumber of mediocrity. "Now is the hour for us to rise from sleep" (Romans 13:11). The heavy drapes of isolation from the Divine Light are pulled back; the brightness of Christ comes streaming into the room; the monk is obliged to wipe the sleep from his eyes and fix his gaze on the splendour of the Holy Face of Christ. "For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God, in the face of Christ Jesus" (2 Corinthians 4:6).

The Sound of His Voice

Having opened his eyes to the light that streams from the Face of Christ, the monk must also open his ears to the sound of His voice. There is not a day, not an hour, when Christ, the Word, is not speaking to the human heart. "Behold, I stand at the gate, and knock. If any man shall hear my voice, and open to me the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Apocalypse 3:20). How does Christ speak? How does He knock at the door of one's heart? He speaks through His creation. He knocks through the experience of all that is beautiful, of all that is good, and true. He speaks through Divine Revelation as received and transmitted by the Church. He knocks in every verse of the psalms that are chanted in choir by day and by night. "I sleep, and my heart watcheth; the voice of my beloved knocking: Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled: for my head is full of dew, and my locks of the drops of the nights" (Canticle 5:2). He speaks through the most ordinary events and in all the circumstances of life, including failure, disappointment, loss, illness, and every manner of suffering. He even knocks by means of the experience of the sin that leaves one feeling alienated, bitter, and empty.

The Fear of the Lord

One who hearkens to the voice of Christ, one who opens the door upon hearing Him knock, will learn the fear of the Lord. What is this fear? It is not the cringing, crushing apprehension of punishment. It is, rather, the spirit of ceaseless adoration and the profound reverence that overtakes one awestruck by the closeness of the thrice-holy God. It is the spirit of the very prayer of Christ's own prayer to the Father, a spirit at once filial and sacerdotal. Christ, "in the days of his flesh, with a strong cry and tears, offering up prayers and supplications to him that was able to save him from death, was heard for his reverence" (Hebrews 5:7).

Now Is the Acceptable Time

Saint Benedict has no time for lolly-gaggers and dawdlers. "Run," he says, "while ye have the light of life, lest the darkness of death overtake you." There is an urgency about the monastic vocation, because there is an urgency about being Christian. The temptation to put off one's response to the light and to the voice of Christ is perilous.

And we helping do exhort you, that you receive not the grace of God in vain. For he saith: In an accepted time have I heard thee; and in the day of salvation have I helped thee. Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. Giving no offence to any man, that our ministry be not blamed: but in all things let us exhibit ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in tribulation, in necessities, in distresses, in stripes, in prisons, in seditions, in labours, in watchings, in fastings, in chastity, in knowledge, in longsuffering, in sweetness, in the Holy Ghost, in charity unfeigned, in the word of truth, in the power of God; by the armour of justice on the right hand and on the left. (2 Corinthians 6:1-7)

Turn from evil, and do good: seek peace and pursue it. Seeking Workmen

This portion of the Prologue is best read, I think, against the parable of the labourers in the vineyard:

The kingdom of heaven is like to an householder, who went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. And having agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And going out about the third hour, he saw others standing in the market place idle. And he said to them: Go you also into my vineyard, and I will give you what shall be just. And they went their way. And again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did in like manner. But about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing, and he saith to them: Why stand you here all the day idle? They say to him: Because no man hath hired us. He saith to them: Go you also into my vineyard. (Matthew 20:1-7)

The Work of God

Christ descends into the marketplace of the world, a place of chaos, bargaining, trickery, and dreams of a better life. He stands in the midst of the multitude, in much the same way as He stood once on the last and greatest day of the festival, crying out, "If any man thirst, let him come to me, and drink" (John 7:37). He is looking for workmen, that is for men who will share in His own divine work: "My Father worketh until now," He says, "and I work" (John 5:17). What is this pressing work of Our Lord and of His Father? "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he hath sent" (John 6:29).

The Gift of Faith

The gift of faith is the work of the Father operating secretly in the soul by the Holy Ghost to bring the soul to Christ. "No man can come to me, unless it be given him by my Father" (John 6:66). The work of man is to receive the gift of faith freely offered, and to stake his life upon it and nothing else. This is what a monk does. He stakes his life -- his one and only life -- upon the fidelity of the Father, who has drawn him to the Son, by the Holy Ghost. This is the essential work of the monk: a participation in the very work of God.

Life and Happiness

What are the fundamental qualifications that Christ looks for in a workman? They are very simple: that the workman desire life and want to see good days. The work to which Our Lord calls men is not an end in itself; it is ordered to the abundant life that only He can give. "I am come that they may have life, and may have it more abundantly" (John 10:10). Work in the vineyard of the Lord is likewise ordered to good days, that is, to happiness. Nothing makes a man happier -- in this life and in the next -- than becoming a co-worker with Christ in the Work of God.

Keep Thy Tongue from Evil

When a man, hearing Christ's invitation, answers, "I am he," God immediately engages him in a new way of being: true and everlasting life belongs to the man who keeps his tongue from evil and his lips from guile. Silence is an indispensable condition of this new way of being. "If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man" (James 3:2). Christ's workman is not quick to speak. He listens. He observes. He ponders. He looks upon others with eyes of mercy. When he speaks, his discourse is gracious and mild, soothing and modest.

Turn Away from Evil and Do Good

True and everlasting life belongs to the man who turns away from evil (i.e., avoids the occasions of sin) and does good (i.e, practices virtue); who seeks after peace and pursues it. It is not enough to turn away from what is evil; Christ's workman turns towards what is good. He is not negative and dismal, forever harping on what is wrong, and castigating corruption; rather, he turns away from the darkness resolutely and, facing the light, invests his best energies in doing good. It is especially important in one's conversation to eschew the dreary rehearsal of all that is wrong in others, in the Church, and in the world, so as to focus, instead, on the power of grace, the splendour of the truth, and the beauty of holiness.

Seek After Peace and Pursue It

Benedictine life is the pursuit of peace, not the fragile, negotiated, and transient peace that is the fruit of merely human endeavour, but the divine peace that descends from above, the gift of the Lamb of God, imparted to those who partake of His sacrifice. The coat-of-arms of the Benedictine monks of the Congregation of Saint-Maur in the 17th century bore the word "Pax" encircled by a crown of thorns: pax inter spinas. The legendary pax benedictina (benedictine peace) is won at the price of much suffering. It is the prize of those who enter with the Lamb into the thicket of His bitter passion and, with Him, become obedient unto death, even death on a cross. "As it is written: For thy sake we are put to death all the day long. We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter" (Romans 8:36). Mother Mectilde de Bar was fond of describing the Benedictine way as "a life of death." She meant, by this, that all is fleeting and disappointing here below, save union with Christ in His passion and death.

The Promises

Today's portion of the Prologue ends with a series of glorious promises:

And when you have done these things, My eyes will be upon you, and My ears will be open to your prayers; and before you call upon Me, I will say unto you, "Behold, I am here." What can be sweeter to us, dearest brethren, than this voice of the Lord inviting us? Behold in His loving-kindness the Lord sheweth unto us the way of life.

There is nothing more consoling in the monastic life than the assurance that, if one lives as Christ's workman, one can be certain of meeting His gaze, of being heard in the hour of prayer, and of finding Christ waiting and desirous of one's company, even before one has begun to pray. "The Master is come," said Martha to Mary, "and calleth for thee" (John 11:28). At every hour of the day and night, Christ speaks from the tabernacles where He dwells as one poor and hidden, saying "Behold, I am here." There is nothing sweeter to the ear of Christ's worker than this invitation to abide close to Him who, out of love, abides close to the poorest and to the least of all.

Jesus said to his disciples: "If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you. Remember the word I spoke to you, ´No slave is greater than his master.´ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. And they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me."

Introductory Prayer: Lord, thank you for granting me the opportunity to be with you. There are things in life, Lord, that attract me, but you attract me more. I hope in you, and I love you. Maybe I don’t really understand what it means to love, and maybe I don’t love the way I should, but I do love you.

Petition: Lord, help me to embrace my cross joyfully.

1. Bearing the Burden: “The world hated me first.” This is the incredible story of the Gospels. Christ came and the culture was against him. As the story of Christ in the Gospel progresses, the forces of antagonism get worse: The dangers increase with the turning of every page. This was a real burden for Christ, the burden of a parent whose children turn against him. Perhaps I, too, feel that burden. Perhaps I experience that rejection from those who love me or from those who don’t believe.

2. Loving Acceptance: Christ courageously and lovingly accepted that burden. He did not complain. Perhaps he asked his Father for an easier way. It is the same in our lives. I often face problems, even when I want to do good. There comes a moment in life when I must accept my limitations and the limitations imposed on me by others. This is a memorable moment in life—the moment I accept my cross, like Christ did. That acceptance isn’t easy, but at the same time it fills my heart with a deep peace and sometimes even joy.

3. Seeking Solutions: After I accept my cross, I experience a new courage, and my imagination fires up. Love always looks for solutions: Christ never stopped searching for ways to get through to the culture. I must do the best I can to evangelize, even though I may encounter opposition. With Christ’s help, no obstacle is too great. He will help me to overcome all the problems I may encounter. The important thing is that I keep focused on the fulfillment of his will out of love. He will take care of the rest.

Conversation with Christ: Lord, you know my burden. You know what makes me lose sleep, what I wake up worrying about. Help me to accept it, as you accepted your cross.

Resolution: I will stop complaining and see what I can do to alleviate the burdens and sufferings of others.

A BATTLE OF WILLS

 
"Again the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them." —Acts 16:7
 

The Holy Spirit prevented Paul and Silas from preaching the gospel in the province of Asia (Acts 16:6). The Spirit also prevented them from going to Bithynia (Acts 16:7). In the same way, often the Holy Spirit does not go along with our plans. Instead, He prevents us from "doing our own thing."

Because the Holy Spirit tells us we're wrong and even proves it (see Jn 16:8), we're tempted to lie to the Holy Spirit (see Acts 5:3). We want to refuse the Spirit or at least stifle (1 Thes 5:19) and sadden the Spirit (Eph 4:30) because the Spirit doesn't even try to fit into our lives. Rather, the Spirit wants to immerse us into His divine life. The Holy Spirit is God and acts accordingly. Thus we can see why some of our families have for generations opposed the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51).

Two weeks from tomorrow, the Church will celebrate Pentecost. To receive the Holy Spirit of Pentecost, we must be willing to change our plans, deny ourselves, repent, be hated by the world (Jn 15:18), and even suffer for love of Jesus. Will you celebrate Pentecost?
