Pope Francis told 800 nuns gathered at the Vatican on Wednesday that they should be spiritual "mothers" rather than "spinsters", and stressed the importance of showing obedience to the Catholic Church, reports AFP in The West Australian.
The pontiff, 76, told the assembly of the International Union of Superiors General they should strive for "a fertile chastity, a chastity which produces spiritual children within the Church."
"The ordained woman is a mother, she must be a mother and not a spinster! You are mothers, like the figures of Mary and the Mother Church," he told the nuns representing women's religious orders from some 75 countries.
"It is not possible to understand Mary without maternity, nor the Church without motherhood," he added.
The Argentine pontiff, who in April backed a report drawn up under his predecessor Benedict XVI accusing nuns in the United States of rebellion, said "obedience is to listen to the will of God."
"Remember that the relationship between authority and obedience is located within the context of the mystery of the Church," he said.
Francis reaffirmed the findings of the report which said that the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) -- which represents around 45,000 US nuns and is known for its social work -- held "radical feminist" views.

Pop the bubbly!
The rest look like Janet Napolitano impersonators.
Sounds like Pope Francis read the nuns the riot act...
But Pope John Paul used that occasion to speak strongly about being prolife (which Mahoney never was).
One way to reprimand a person is to give a public audience and say some things -- well, that just should be said.
I heard some sisters on EWTN radio today talking about this. They loved it! They backed his words 100%
In the politest possible way. I thought it was very well done.
The Brazilian Cardinal seemed to just want everyone to pretend to agree, and most important, make sure he was properly cc'd on everyone's memos. Very time-serving faceless-bureaucrat of him, if that's what he's after.
Some people seemed to think that because of the obvious gift of humility that Pope Francis exudes, for some reason he would reverse many "policies/decisions" of Pope Benedict XVI, but this looks like he is reaffirming those calls by B-16.
(Now, maybe next he could assemble a sample group of some selected U.S. "Catholic" voters who ignorantly voted for a certain pro-death, pro-pervert-"marriage", anti-Catholic politician whose ever-growing tally of brazenly bold-faced lies plainly reveal his own sinister attempts to emulate the prince and father of lies and demon of death (Satan), and tell those voters to never vote again. Then broadcast that same message to the rest of the misguided voters who voted for that perverse prevaricator and baby killer...)

Don’t hold your breath, it ain’t gonna happen!
Well, I'm not holding my breath waiting for that to happen, and even if it did happen, I'm pretty sure that many of the voters who voted that way would not listen to him anyway, just like I think that some of these nuns will not listen to him anyway, even though they definitely should.
Think of Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta. She modeled being a mother to all she met. Even those who persecuted her.
“just like I think that some of these nuns will not listen to him anyway, even though they definitely should.”
The nuns, by their chosen profession, have a greater responsibility to listen to him and to heed his edicts. The voters who claim to be followers of what the church he represents teaches, also have an obligation...but he has little power/influence with most of them today. Most catholics voted for Obama, the baby killer, the dung puncher enthusiast, the every other way EVIL one. Why?
When people are bad examples and corrupt children -- this is what Jesus was referring to.
So the Brazilian Cardinal did not put a millstone around the necks of these nuns and throw them into the sea. But that is almost necessary to try to save children from the corruptive influences of these nuns
The LifeSiteNews.com article had a picture of a nun in a t-shirt that said Nuns for Choice.
How much worse can it get when nuns are undercutting the authority of the Church and promoting abortion?
I understood the Cardinal’s garble to mean that he was discouraging discipline of the errant orders, because after all, people can understand authority in different ways ... and anyway, the proper protocols hadn’t all been followed, and he felt slighted.
This shows the danger of garble, especially in translation!
It's indeed sickening, and the reason "why" is very clear: Catholics voted for Obama, by exactly the same percentages as American voters voted for Obama, because they vote by their Zip-code, not by their faith.
When I say this, I mean that "Zip code" is a far more accurate predictor of how people will vote, than church affiliation. And this is because it pretty much sorts people by neighborhood, which means by income, education, and all-over "culture". Local mid-set. And that's how voters vote.
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds.” It’s not happening for a lot of Christians. People are in their little class enclaves, and it’s hard to break out. My ministry leader just had another of her blowups about the Charismatics (who seem to bother nobody but her), when we have leaders in the parish who proudly support Infanticide Obama, President Punished-with-a-baby.
Suggested by your tagline:
“One of these days, I’m gonna climb that mountain ... walk up there, among them clouds. Where the cotton’s high, and the corn’s a growin’, and there ain’t ... no fields to plow.”
(A question Walter Brennan never asked): You got any cilantro seeds for me? :o)
Yes, I do! I was just going to reseed mine, too. When I locate the seeds, which I saw fairly recently, I’ll send you some.
