I was upset at one time at Pope John Paul for having an audience wtih Cardinal Mahoney of Los Angeles and other bishops.

But Pope John Paul used that occasion to speak strongly about being prolife (which Mahoney never was).

One way to reprimand a person is to give a public audience and say some things -- well, that just should be said.

In the politest possible way. I thought it was very well done.

The Brazilian Cardinal seemed to just want everyone to pretend to agree, and most important, make sure he was properly cc'd on everyone's memos. Very time-serving faceless-bureaucrat of him, if that's what he's after.
