But I’m assuming it’s OK to say nice things about someone behind their back? I like to do that, but will cease if that counts as gossiping or involving myself in someone else’s life.
I think of the comments are positive, then that dosent count. Gossip is bad because it damages someone’s character. Think the fifth commandment: thou shalt not kill. Gossip detracts from someone’s character or reputation, whether what’s being said is true or not. I believe that is what the Holy Father is referring to. Having a conversation behind someone’s back in which you say “she has good taste” or “she’s always helpful” isn’t the same.
So in other words, keep on keepin on. You’re safe!
"Did you see Mrs Jones' hot new boyfriend?" lol.
Even worse "Mama wants one too!!" Is that envy, just drooling, or coveting thy married neighbors . . . boyfriend? My guess. All the above.
The term gossip usually refers to malicious gossip.
“...OK to say nice things about someone behind their back...”
This may be too purist, yet I get nervous when I think of people talking behind my back saying either good or bad things. I am uneasy when others feel they can judge me - a positive statement about someone else is a judgement in its own way. I try not to discuss other at all, although I fail at this, being human. This is just my perspective.
