Transgender student skips graduation (NM Catholic school forbids girl to wear robes as a male)

Wednesday’s St. Pius X graduation ceremony was at least one student short.

Transgender student Damian Garcia elected to stay home after the school told him he had to wear a white robe, for girls, instead of the black worn by male students. Garcia was born a girl named Brandi until he legally changed his name last year.

He said the school and archdiocese told him they would refer to the gender on his birth certificate, which is female, and require him to wear the white robe.

The archdiocese did not return a phone call seeking comment Wednesday. Although Garcia has received a lot of support from the community, ... in letters to the Journal and on the Journal’s Facebook page, people have praised the school for not giving in to the request.

The University of New Mexico’s LGBTQ Resource Center will host a graduation ceremony for Garcia from 5 to 7 p.m. May 30 in a courtyard next to Scholes Hall on main campus.

Interesting to hear all the local media portraying "him" (or "her" or whatever) as a victim of discrimination and by doing so exerting pressure on the Catholic school to give in to their demands. Very refreshing to see them stand strong for traditional moral values and not bowing to the will of the "politically correct" choir.

Where are the state-funded resource centers and inclusion programs and awards programs and scholarship programs for these three categories of human identity?

Honestly, they used to actually get the surgery before referring to themselves as a different sex. Now, all they have to do is change their name and then demand everyone refer to them as a different sex? This is nuts. Glad this one school decided not to go along with this individual’s insanity.

I suspect a public school would have given in to "her" demand to wear male robes. I'd also bet as a self-identified "he," he would have been bullied/beaten at a public high school given the predominance of gangs in the ABQ public schools. The Catholic school gave "him" shelter (a student there since a freshman) and his "condition" was well known to staff and other students, according to the ABQ Journal article.

(Very difficult to know which personal pronoun to use to identify this person in a discussion such as this.)
