Israeli Sources Say Pope Plans Peace Meeting Between Abrahamic Religions
UCA News ^ | 5/30/13 | Andrea Tornielli

Posted on 05/30/2013 7:38:34 PM PDT by marshmallow

The aim is to articulate that God does not sanction anyone to kill

Israeli government sources claim Francis is apparently thinking of calling a meeting between leaders and faithful of the world’s three biggest monotheistic religions, in Rome, to launch a message of peace, countering violence and the use of God’s name to justify hatred and terrorist acts.

The sources say the Pope announced his intentions during an Audience on April 30, but there was no mention of this in the communiqué the Holy See’s issued after the Audience.

President Shimon Peres of Israel “told the pope that there are people who use God’s name to justify terrorism” and religious leaders should “say out loud that God did not give anyone permission to kill their neighbor.”

According to the information contained in a summary of the Audience received by the Israeli government, Francis told Peres he “whole-heartedly supported” his appeal against violence and that “he wanted to promote a meeting between religious leaders and faithful of the three major religions” founded by Abraham, “in Rome”. The aim would be to “make people see” that the religions “oppose violence and terrorism.”

If these statements were indeed made during the Audience, it looks like the pope is thinking about possible peace initiatives that would be restricted to the world’s three major monotheistic faiths.

It would not be an interreligious meeting involving all faiths, like the Assisi gatherings organised by John Paul II and then by Benedict XVI in 2011. Readers will remember that in January 2002, just a few months after the 9/11 attacks in the United States, Pope John Paul II convened a special meeting of religions in Assisi, in order to make it crystal clear that in no way could violence and terrorism be justified on theological grounds.

Why would the Pope need to set up a meeting between Jews and Christians?

I don't understand...

If the Pope recognizes other religions as equal to Catholicism, then doesn't that negate Jesus as the only way to heaven?

Disclosure - I am of protestant faith but I do agree with the Catholic church on some things, such as life issues. (birth control, abortion, death)

Did you read the article?

President Peres "told the Pope that there are people who use God’s name to justify terrorism” and religious leaders should “say out loud that God did not give anyone permission to kill their neighbour.”

The President of the International Council of Christians and Jews (Iccj), Rabbi David Rosen, has asked the Pope to help leaders of the Jewish and Muslim religions to promote an initiative for peace in the Holy Land. Speaking to a group of Italian journalists, Rosen suggested the Pope convene a meeting between the Holy Land’s religious leaders, in Jerusalem, to pray for peace in the region. “2015 could be a perfect time to do this as it will mark the fiftieth anniversary of the promulgation of “Nostra Aetate”, the Second Vatican Council declaration on the Relation of the Church with Non-Christian Religions”. The Rabbi said an initiative like this was important as it would “boost political efforts to resolve conflicts in the region.”

You are correct sir. I believe that one day, the power of Islam will be broken, by God. Until that time, I expect Islam will do a whole lot of damage, to a whole lot of people. There will be no peace, until Christ returns.

I am aware that Muslims consider themselves to be an Abrahamaic faith. My comment should have been obvious that I was aware of it.

Despite any claims, Islam is not an Abrahamic faith.

Let them try.

Islam is not in any meaningful sense a derivative of the religion of Abraham. The only attribute they hold in common is the principle of monotheism. Is there evidence, from the words of Mohammed, that Abraham provided the genesis of that idea for him?

This site does not particularly capture the pulse of the majority of the country in regards to relations with Jewish people. There are large amount of Christians here(and even larger in other Christian nations globally) that do not have favourable relations with Jewish people. I am also not accounting for the fact that Christians are not seen favourably by Orthodox Jewish people even when the Christians have the best intentions.

In any case, such a meeting would be beneficial for all parties attending to foster better relations.

That being said I am highly skeptical of it being fruitful. Muslims do not have central authorities, and it is very easy for them to twist their faith. It is also difficult to mold their faith into something more peaceful because it is considered blasphemy for them to even question the contents of the quran.
The Pope is flogging a dead horse.

Francis of Rome recently made some comments about atheists that got a lot of attention, but in the process people missed a bigger point. Francis stated:

Instead, this ‘closing off’ that imagines that those outside, everyone, cannot do good is a wall that leads to war and also to what some people throughout history have conceived of: killing in the name of God. That we can kill in the name of God. And that, simply, is blasphemy. To say that you can kill in the name of God is blasphemy.

But Urban II stated (1095):
“On this account I, or rather the Lord, beseech you as Christ’s heralds to publish this everywhere and to persuade all people of whatever rank, foot-soldiers and knights, poor and rich, to carry aid promptly to those Christians and to destroy that vile race from the lands of our friends. I say this to those who are present, it meant also for those who are absent. Moreover, Christ commands it.”

“All who die by the way, whether by land or by sea, or in battle against the pagans, shall have immediate remission of sins. This I grant them through the power of God with which I am invested. O what a disgrace if such a despised and base race, which worships demons, should conquer a people which has the faith of omnipotent God and is made glorious with the name of Christ! With what reproaches will the Lord overwhelm us if you do not aid those who, with us, profess the Christian religion! Let those who have been accustomed unjustly to wage private warfare against the faithful now go against the infidels and end with victory this war which should have been begun long ago. Let those who for a long time, have been robbers, now become knights. Let those who have been fighting against their brothers and relatives now fight in a proper way against the barbarians. Let those who have been serving as mercenaries for small pay now obtain the eternal reward. Let those who have been wearing themselves out in both body and soul now work for a double honor. Behold! on this side will be the sorrowful and poor, on that, the rich; on this side, the enemies of the Lord, on that, his friends. Let those who go not put off the journey, but rent their lands and collect money for their expenses; and as soon as winter is over and spring comes, let hem eagerly set out on the way with God as their guide.”

(As reported by Fulcher of Chartres)

And Eugene III stated (1154):
“We exhort therefore all of you in God, we ask and command, and, for the remission of sins enjoin: that those who are of God, and, above all, the greater men and the nobles do manfully gird themselves; and that you strive so to oppose the multitude of the infidels, who rejoice at the time in a victory gained over us, and so to defend the oriental church -freed from their tyranny by so great an outpouring of the blood of your fathers, as we have said, - and to snatch many thousands of your captive brothers from their hands,- that the dignity of the Christian name may be increased in your time, and that your valour which is praised throughout the whole world, may remain intact and unshaken. May that good Matthias be an example to you, who, to preserve the laws of his fathers, did not in the least doubt to expose himself with his sons and relations to death, and to leave whatever he possessed in the world; and who at length, by the help of the divine aid, after many labours however, did, as well as his progeny, manfully triumph over his enemies.

“We, moreover, providing with paternal solicitude for your tranquillity and for the destitution of that same church, do grant and confirm by the authority conceded to us of God, to those who by the promptings of devotion do decide to undertake and to carry through so holy and so necessary a work and labour, that remission of sins which our aforesaid predecessor pope Urban did institute; and do decree that their wives and sons, their goods also and possessions shall remain under the protection of our selves and of the archbishops, bishops and other prelates of the church of God.”

Moreover, Innocent III stated (1215):
“Aspiring with ardent desire to liberate the Holy Land from the hands of the ungodly, by the counssel of prudent men Who fully know he circumstances of times and places the holy council approving: we decree that the crusaders shall so prepare themselves that, at the Calends of the June following the next one, all who have arranged to cross by sea shall come together in the kingdom of Sicily; some, as shall be convenient and fitting, at Brindisi, and others at Messina and the places adjoining on both sides where we also have arranged then to be present in person if God wills it, in order that by our counsel and aid the Christian army may be healthfully arranged, about to start with the divine and apostolic benediction.

1. Against the same term, also, those who have decided to go by land shall endeavour to make themselves ready; announcing to us, in the meantime, this determination, so that we may grant them, for counsel and aid, a suitable legate from our side.

2. Priests, moreover, and other clergy who shall be in the Christian army, subordinates as well as prelates, shall diligently insist with prayer and exhortation, reaching the crusaders by word and example alike that they should always have the divine fear and love before their eves, and that they should not say or do anything which might offend the divine majesty. Although at times they may lapse into sin, through true penitence they shall soon arise again; showing humility of heart and body, and observing moderation as well in their living as in their apparel; altogether avoiding dissensions and emulations; rancour and spleen being entirely removed from them. So that, thus armed with spiritual and material weapons, they may fight the more securely against the enemies of the faith; not presuming in their own power, but hoping in the divine virtue.”

So, are popes Urban II, Eugene III, and Innocent III all blasphemers, or is Francis out of step with the tradition of Rome?

But it gets worse. Recall the instructions to Jehu:

2 Kings 9:6-10
“And he arose, and went into the house; and he poured the oil on his head, and said unto him, “Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, ‘I have anointed thee king over the people of the Lord, even over Israel. And thou shalt smite the house of Ahab thy master, that I may avenge the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the Lord, at the hand of Jezebel. For the whole house of Ahab shall perish: and I will cut off from Ahab him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel: and I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah: and the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the portion of Jezreel, and there shall be none to bury her.’” And he opened the door, and fled.”

Was that prophet a blasphemer?

What about this prophet:
Deuteronomy 20:16-18

“But of the cities of these people, which the Lord thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth: but thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee: that they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so should ye sin against the Lord your God.”

Is Moses a blasphemer? But the cruelest irony of all:

Leviticus 24:16

“And he that blasphemeth the name of the Lord, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of the Lord, shall be put to death.”

The words of Francis of Rome do not just contradict a trio of his predecessors, they contradict the law and the prophets. They contradict the Word of God.

Until the Pope and the rest of the world understands that Islam is NOT just another Abrahamic religion, no attempts for peace will be possible. Though Muhammad claimed to be worshiping the one, true God of Abraham, we can easily see from the Quran that Allah is NOT the same God Abraham, Isaac and Jacob worshiped. We also know that Jesus Christ IS Almighty God in the flesh and Islam completely rejects this as does modern Judaism, but, one day, Judaism WILL accept Jesus as their Messiah. Muslims will NEVER accept him.

I hope the new Pope is smart enough to realize that the Jews and the Muslims are bitter enemies and no amount of sweet talking will get them to kiss and make up. That enmity has been going on for longer than Christianity has been around. Also, the Anti-Christ WILL be successful in getting a seven year peace treaty signed with Israel and her neighbors, but it will not last more than half that time and the world will experience what the wrath of Almighty God poured out without measure feels like!

President Peres "told the Pope that there are people who use God’s name to justify terrorism” and religious leaders should “say out loud that God did not give anyone permission to kill their neighbour.”

Peres knows good and well that the Muslims response will be, "Yes, Allah DOES give us permission to kill our neighbors!". Jews and Christians are "infidels" to them and whoever does not pay the jizya (tax) or convert to Islam is fair game. The "Religion of Peace" is a PR gimic! Please tell me your new Pope is smart enough to already know this.

Francis is doing his job.

He isn’t General Francis; he is Pope Francis.

His job is to do his best to bring the peace and grace of Christ into the world.

Regarding your questioning Francis’ intelligence for pursuing peace, was Jesus stupid because he said for us to love our enemies?

Jacob (Jews and Christians) came out clutching the heel of Esau (muslims).

Genesis 25:21 Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife because she was childless. The Lord answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant. 25:22 But the children struggled inside her, and she said, “If it is going to be like this, I’m not so sure I want to be pregnant!” So she asked the Lord, 25:23 and the Lord said to her,

“Two nations are in your womb,

and two peoples will be separated from within you.

One people will be stronger than the other,

and the older will serve the younger.”

Genesis 27:38 And Esau said unto his father, Hast thou but one blessing, my father? bless me, even me also, O my father. And Esau lifted up his voice, and wept.

39 And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above;

40 And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.

41 And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob.

42 And these words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him, Behold, thy brother Esau, as touching thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee.

This is pretty significant. It shows the two at war from the very beginning in the womb and not only that because prophecy is filled, but later Jesus plainly states that those who are first among you will be last and those that are last among you will be first.

I disregard everything in the koran because it is not a book of truth.

I equate islam to Orwell's "1984" where they (muhammad) took the Torah and the Bible and crossed out what they didn't like and added what they did.

I don't care their belief of descending from Ishmael.

But that's besides the point.

---

I referenced Esau [Edom] not Ishmael. Jacob and Esau's father was Isaac; Ishmael would've been their uncle. Your argument relies on the muslims' belief Ishmael was offered up and not Isaac. My argument is Isaac was offered to God by Abraham, as it is written in the Bible, and that Jacob and Esau were Isaac's son. Further my argument is the Jews descended from Jacob (loved by God) and the Arabs descended from Esau (hated by God).

Insomuch as belief goes, I don't care the muslims believe the descended from Ishmael as their patriarch or that he was offered to God as a sacrifice; their book is one of lies.

Obidiah's prophecy

Esau's participation in the destruction of the Temple Which, the muslims of today believe they have claim to that ground as their birthright.

Wiki for a map of Edom's location

"Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated" Malachi 1:2-3 and Romans 9:13

--

"The sons of Eliphaz, the firstborn son of Esau, were Chief Teman, Chief Omar, Chief Zepho, Chief Kenaz, Chief Korah, Chief Gatam, and Chief Amalek

"But as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: behold I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation." Genesis 17:20

It makes no sense for Ishmael to have God's blessing and for Ishmael to be at war with Israel. It does however make sense that an outcast nation at war since the womb would descend into people that pervert God's Word and continue a millennium jihad that they were cheated from their birthright.

I believe there is pretty strong evidence that arabs/muslims descended from Esau and Biblical reason for their war.

“Jacob (Jews and Christians) came out clutching the heel of Esau (muslims).”

Is that common Christian commentary? Just curious... Jewish commentary is that Jacob is (well, himself...a father of the Jewish people) and Esau is Rome.

I know a couple of Jews that hold similar. I was actually discussing this with them when I was thinking what to type.

Well, they might believe it, but Arabs and Jews/Hebrews are both Semites, and Romans are Italians? Latins? Indo-Europeans?

So as far as Jacob and Esau being brothers, it makes far more sense genetically for Esau to be Arabian.
