A bill imposing jail terms of up to three years on those who offend religious believers is set to become law in Russia. The new blasphemy law was approved by the State Duma in Moscow on Tuesday, June 11.
According to the bill, public actions expressing clear disrespect for society and committed with the goal of offending religious feelings of the faithful would be punishable with jail terms of up to one year and fines of up to 300,000 rubles ($9,200). While publicly expressing clear disrespect to believers, including actions undertaken at places of worship, would be punishable by up to three years in prison, fines of up to 500,000 rubles, and compulsory correctional labor.
In addition to passing the new anti-blasphemy law, the countrys lower house of Parliament also passed a bill to outlaw activism by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) individuals and their supporters.
Both new pieces of legislation are being promoted by a large portion of the Russian political establishment, and not surprisingly, both are strongly backed by the Russian Orthodox Church.
The new blasphemy legislation comes in the aftermath of last years trial and conviction of three members of the all-female Russian punk group Pussy Riot for hooliganism on grounds of religious hatred after they sang a protest song in Moscows main Orthodox cathedral.

Quite the turnabout by Mother Russia...
The corruption in Russia is beyond belief snd far beyond the US.
Everbody in Russia has a dash cam in their car because of the rampant insurance fraud.
They’re ACTUALLY doing to political opponents of the regime in Russia things far worse than what the regime is doing to political opponents, or what people are imagining they are doing to political opponents, here in the US.
It’s hardly the paradise you imagine.
And every time countries like Russia do something you support, it actually hurts your cause in the U.S. because to most sane people in this country Russia isn’t a model for anything.
The Russian regime certainly believes Protestant evangelicals are part of an evil US plot against the regime.
Awesome for them.
But as for the United States, well, “when God is ushered out, Satan rushes right in”.
By that standard, Islam doesn’t insult the God of the Bible either. Allah is Arabic for The God. They regard him as the same God that it’s in the Old and New Testament. They regard Mohammed as a Prophet in the Moses/Jesus vein (obviously not regarding Jesus as divine).
There have actually been cases of Muslims claiming the Bible is blasphemous!
Muslim nations limit the activities of Christians within their borders very strictly.
“Even Islam is allowed, because that encompasses religious freedom”
As we have Hate Crimes it is obvious we do not afford Hate the protection of the first amendment.
If we don’t change that, there will be nothing to stop the cancer of Islam from spreading until it consumes everyone.
I am gradually reaching the conclusion that the puppet masters who pull little barry’s regime strings have as their model for globalism to allow Islam to enslave the Middle East, expecting that the people of the M>E> will eventually realize how demonic the political regime of Islam is. Of course, this is deadly to Western Civilization, as proven by the billions of moslems who endorse the blood lust of their radical representatives.
Like us, they have a lot of atheist communists/homos/Islamists/Satanists there who are accustomed to vandalizing and threatening Christians there.
This is really wrong. Punishing radical speech is wrong. But the KGB were the original activists for our radical Left and their causes of destroying families, education and our society.
Dude, have you SEEN what Russia does to Muslim terrorists? Do you have any idea of how frightened the Chechen provence is when any of their Muslims acts up? Putin wears the Cross and the Crucifix. He brings it to any Muslim terrorists who act within Russia. There is no Miranda rights for Muslim terrorists in Russia. No comfy prisons.
There is, however, swift and usually fatal retribution.
Negative. While the percent of corrupt transactions in the US is less than some other countries, the sheer magnitude of the corruption puts the Middle East or Russia to shame.
Fantastic. Wow. Wow.
America better get this done.

wow wow is right.
3 years in jail for insulting atheists (as many on FR refer to atheism as a religion).
Somehow, I don’t think that’s what you had in mind.
Oh, what other examples of our first amendment right (given to us by God) would you like squelched?
Yes, you continue to address only the issue you want to address, not the questions posed to you. I’m left thinking that there are no rights you’d not squelch if the exercise of those rights somehow offended your particular conception of Biblical truth.
I’m very pleased that you are free to exercise your religion and to proselytize for it publicly without fear, but a bit confused by US citizens who would want the law of the land to be strictly Biblical (I don’t think I’ve confused your point on this) and not based on our Constitution.
The Constitution does not contain any laws that address morality, i.e., what’s right and wrong, i.e., is it wrong to murder, rape, steal, etc.
God’s Law includes moral law, i.e., it is wrong to murder, rape, steal, etc.
If we exclude the Bible from the laws we enact (man-designed laws), and we do not make reference to the Bible in our laws (simply like “Criminal laws shall not be contradictory to Scripture”, etc.), then our laws are based on people deciding what they want the law to be.
Which happens on a continual basis as legislatures meet.
However, men are born into sin and will typically be corrupt in their passage of bills into law. In fact, in America today, I’d say that is basically always the case.
There is virtually always one small subset of the population, a group or groups, each having a small leadership that runs the group, which is really behind the enactment of a law.
So our laws change constantly. In other words - we are changing our definition of RIGHT and WRONG every day, willy nilly, over time.
Yesterday you could walk your dog, today you need to pick up his poop and put it in a paper bag. Tomorrow, you’ll have to put in into a plastic bag.
We eventually wind up with, basically, the wealthy and powerful can do whatever they please and the poor see their families destroyed because they tried to raise their kids to be good people. In short, totalitarianism, where the law is simply a charade that keeps the powerful in power and everyone else living in tormented slavery. We’re not there yet, but I think many people can see where America is headed.
Another example of what we wind up with is all the laws and regulation related to finance: trillions in dubious debt securities floating around the markets - all managed by people who are the leaders of our society. And yet mom and pop businesses are either locked out of or forced into the capital markets establishment. The Bible addresses all parts of life, and a system of civil laws that is compatible with Scripture forms a perfect moral framework that can inform all areas of law.
Instead, today, we have laws, they just have no required connection at all to any sort of morality other than what can get packed into a law passed in the middle of the night. But see, morality was never addressed in our Constitution. The Preamble says “establish Justice”, but does not specify whose justice, by what standard are we measuring. So today we continue to redefine what justice means with every law passed by a perverse and crooked generation.
If we stop to actually read and logically and objectively analyze the Constitution, instead of merely screaming “Constitution !” as the answer to every question, we arrive at the inescapable conclusion that it leaves every door wide open for the problems we see in America today.
The most common misunderstanding of Biblically-based civil law is that unbelievers would be forced to be Christian and be subject to all sorts of “can’t drink, can’t wear certain clothes”, etc.
This is 100% NOT the case and reflects many misundertandings of the Bible, for example, alcoholic drink consumption is NOT prohibited, including (adding) our own man-made laws and stating or even implying that they are part of Scripture IS prohibited (so arbitrary clothing rules are unscriptural, while the indecent exposure laws we already have would be remain), etc.
Since what we have today in the legal system is rooted in earlier days when Christian influence was greater, it is, in fact, rooted in Scripture. Since so few people really know the Bible and our legal system and its history, few can make the connection for concepts like requiring witness testimony. We’ve just increasingly moved our civil laws away from Scriptural compliance because our Constitution did not formalize any connection to it.
