It seems to me that all the Pope is saying here is that we need bishops who are “pastoral”. That reminds me of the many bishops who continue to allow pro-abortion politicians to receive the Eucharist...you know, because that is the so-called “pastoral” thing to do.

When do we start requiring bishops with spines?

When you read all of his comments, it sounds as if he means pastoral in the true sense, that is, keeping the flock united in the Faith and heading towards Christ. I don’t think this sounds mushy at all. If bishops had had that attitude - and the poverty and lack of interest in human respect that goes with it - the Church would be a lot different now.

But instead, the bishops wanted to be in with the in crowd and the darlings of the New York Times.
