WHY DID JOSEPH SMITH DIE SO YOUNG? [Anniversary of Mormon leader's death]

“For although a man may have many revelations, and have power to do many mighty works, yet if he boasts in his own strength, and sets at naught the counsels of God, and follows after the dictates of his own will and carnal desires, he must fall and incur the vengeance of a just God upon him.”—Doctrine and Covenants 3:4

Did Joseph Smith “boast in his own strength”?

“I have more to boast of than ever any man had…A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I.…”—Joseph Smith, May 26, 1844, History of the Church, vol 6, pp. 408-409

“I prophesy they never will have power to kill me till my work is accomplished, and I am ready to die.”—History of the Church, vol. 6, p. 58

Was Joseph “ready to die”?

Joseph…opening the door a few inches he discharged his six shooter in the stairway…two or three barrels of which missed fire.…and he fell outward into the hands of his murderers, exclaiming. ‘O Lord, my God!’” —June 27, 1844, History of the Church, vol. 6, p. 618

“Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.” —Proverbs 25:14

This is the 169th anniversary of the death of the original founder of Mormonism.

He died firing off one of his two loaded pistols in a home-like "jail cell" -- not a very common thing for "inmates" to have possession -- as he was overrun by vigilantes in an exchange of fire. He shot some of those moving in on him, and his brother Hyrum, also killed by these vigilantes, was shot both from the front (by the vigilantes) as well as one unexplained bullet wound from the back. [His brother Joseph was shooting from behind him]

From the article:

I think he made a lot of enemies introducing polygamy in to the faith and reportedly sleeping with underage girls.

That’s a bit complicated, because in some cases he married the daughter AND the mother.

(Well I do know that most prisoners shot -- with two loaded weapons in possession -- would not be deemed "martyr" status were they shot with said loaded weapons...especially while using one of them to fire back...but...leave it to Mormons to distort history on this one)

Since these weapons were smuggled into Joseph's possession earlier...makes one wonder why the question of the role of Joseph's guards in this haven't been delved into more in-depth.

For example...say you were such a "guard" in 1844...
And say, in some way, you became aware that a prisoner was smuggled loaded weapons...
And then say, that your cowardice as a guard got the best of you -- and you didn't want to PERSONALLY confront four prisoners in the same room with two known loaded weapons among them...
...What then might such a guard do?

Well, if he knew that Smith had been causing severe angst among regional community members...he might simply let them do the "dirty work" (of confronting armed prisoners) for him...

How he may have communicated that to such vigilantes is wide open to conjecture...

That could have been everything from "Hey, I'm taking a supper break from the 'cell/home' from this time to that time"...
...to "Hey, these prisoners are armed & I need armed assistance confronting them"...
...to ______________ (fill in the blank)

Wouldn’t that be like marrying your own MIL?

According to Mormon historian Todd Compton, in his book In Sacred Loneliness: The Plural Wives of Joseph Smith, Smith entered into the following polygamous marraiges:

... for a total of 33 plural marriages. Eleven of Smith's wives were already married to other men at the time Joseph Smith married them.

In summary, out of Smith's 33 plural wives, twenty were under age 30 and thirteen were over age 30. A third of all the wives were married to someone else when Smith took them.

And it’s awfully “convenient” that you failed to mention the dozens, if not hundreds of reasons WHY that mob was storming the jail.

JS made his bed so to speak...

Must have been a coincidence.

Joe was no Martyr Placemarker

Joseph Smith did not die for his faith, like any
Biblical martyr.

1. He was in jail for destruction of private property.
2. He had an angry mob after him because of his running roughshod
over the rights of others.
3. He fired into the mob as it rushed his cell.
4. He caught return fire, while trying to leap out a window.

He was neither a prophet, nor a man of God, nor a martyr.

He was simply a vile man who started life deceiving
others that he could see below the earth using a
peepstone. He admitted he faked it to get money.

He pursued other men’s wives to add to his harem. They
understandably did not like this.

I am not mistaken about the man’s character - he
admitted this himself. Nor am I mistaken about the events.
I’ve read contemporaneous accounts.

Not a martyr, but a horndog.

He got there in the first place because he had an angry mob destroy the printing press of a dissident Mormon newspaper that accused him of systematic abuse of women, tyrannical control over his cult, amongst many other things. Then, just like Stephen the Martyr or Jesus himself, he goes down in a blaze of gunfire and... err, oh wait.

The secular view, written at the time, is that Smith died because the Mormons were not politically monolithic.

In all fairness, they were caught between two political factions, and both demanded the Mormon vote, “or else”. So after due consideration, Smith promised one of the factions the Mormon vote. And though encouraged to vote that way, enough Mormons voted for the other side that it split their vote, and created two political enemies.

While there was a lot more involved before things went to heck, that certainly got the ball rolling.

It should be noted that even today, while the majority of Mormons tend to vote conservative Republican, there is a minority that pretty much fill the spectrum of the political left, from liberal to barking Moonbat.

I invite you to point out anything in Colofornian’s post that is any of those things...

If not, perhaps you are unable?

So was the poor man a martyr?

Well...#1...how many other armed prisoners firing off weapons in other settings have been deemed as "martyrs?"

Beyond that...see my conjecture in post #17.

Because it also comes down to how much a given guard may have known that Smith & Co. were armed with two loaded weapons...loaded weapons that Mormon historians conceded were in possession of Smith (with one being fired off)...just a concession you NEVER see Lds top leadership emphasize -- or even mention -- in their tours of the Carthage jail they own...or in their writing/speaking of Smith's death.

This is info deemed as not "faith promoting."

The secular view, written at the time, is that Smith died because the Mormons were not politically monolithic.

#1...At one point in the early 1840s, Smith's Nauvoo, IL built-up Mormon community was at large -- or larger -- than Chicago was at the time.

#2...In 1844, Smith himself had declared himself a candidate for POTUS...something he wouldn't have done if he was dealing with political rivalry in Nauvoo...which he really didn't have.
