The Roman Catholic cardinal in the Dominican Republic responded on Thursday to news that President Barack Obama had nominated an openly gay man as ambassador to the island nation by calling him a 'maricón' -- slang for 'faggot' or 'sissy' -- during a press conference.
Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez took questions on Thursday in the capital city of Santo Domingo about the appointment of James 'Wally' Brewster, an Obama campaign donation 'bundler,' as his nation's top emissary from Washington, D.C.
Asked to shift topics to a question about agriculture, the high-ranking clergyman brought laughs from reporters by saying, 'We went from faggots and lesbians to chickens, now?'
'In the United States anything can happen,' he complained. 'But there's no one in this country who doesn't know what my position is on the matter.'
The press conference came three days before an annual gay pride parade in Santo Domingo.

I don’t understand appointing ambassadors that offend the culture of the host country. Aren’t they suppose to choose diplomats?
Yes and it can also be a deadly combination for the ambassador as demonstrated in Libya. While being homosexual may have not been the sole reason for Stevens death I believe it was a major contributing element.
Those intolerant Catholics!!! /s
That is one great line!! This country's government is getting some massive humiliation treatment... and I'm loving it.
It’s an “IN YOUR FACE” tactic to break down MORAL barriers. Glad the Domincans are more MORAL than we are!
The important question, that I believe should be on everyone’s mind here in the U.S, is how do you properly pronounce “maricón”?
Obama says that a privately made youtube video can be offensive to foreign cultures and ban it yet he sees no hypocrisy in shoving homosexuality down the throats of foreign nations using the power of the US State Department.
Clinton did something similar by appointing a homosexual man as ambassador to an overwhelmingly Catholic country (but since the country was in Europe maybe a lot of the population was only nominally Catholic).
mah ree CONE
A nation can refuse another’s ambassador.
Plum ambassadorial post that don’t need skilled diplomats are held for large campaign contributors. Brewster’s choosing the Dominican Republic, which has a large gay community, is a reflection of his own personal preference in potential sexual partners.
The accent is on the last syllable. CON, not cone.
Yes, except that you cut off the “r” so that it sounds more like a “d.”
I’m amused at the whole situation. No doubt there’s a fair amount of homosexuality in the DR, especially involving tourists, but the Cardinal doesn’t have to pretend it’s respectable.
Arent they suppose to choose diplomats? There have been no diplomats since 1850, I believe.
Obama is choosing diplomats, women for Islamic states, perverts for religious states.
Obama wants America to be destroyed and is making sure nobody will help when we get invaded by Russia and China.
One by one, Obama is destroying every foundational stone under us.
Obama is a Traitor, and so is the Congress Critters that support him in his efforts.
But God is patient, and often waits till the offenders cup is full before He brings justice.
Apparently Obama is capable of so much more...
No, CONE is correct. It’s important to learn correct Spanish pronunciation: soon after amnesty, it will become the majority language.
Now I know a little more Spanish thanks to Free Republic. I will use the word “maricon” (sorry, I don’t know how to type the accent mark over the last syllable). I think you are right about the pronunciation of the vowel “o”.
ooops... I replied to the wrong person. I think “cone” as in pine cone is correct.
Well, The Dominican Republic is nearly 70% Roman Catholic. And you know what Obama's method of dealing with ideologies that oppose him is...
Yes, I know that the accent is on the last syllable - I speak Spanish, learned in Latín America - I have done simultaneous translations in public forums -
I wrote it to make it clear to English speakers.
Spanish has fewer short vowels, like the i in big or king, the uh sound created by the o in love or the u in hurry.
I was indicating that the o in maricon was long, and since I don’t have that symbol on my keyboard, I wrote CONE in capital letters as the stressed last syllable, with an e at the end to indicate that the o is long, as in the cone of ice cream cone, not short like the con of convert.
I’m betting that Mariicon doesn’t translate to “faggot”
Oh...it doesn’t. Comes from magpie, a bird
So, lousy translation. I’m guessing “flighty” might be closer.
That said, I’m not surprised the rest of the world isn’t worshipping at the altar of American political correctness.
And no, I will not translate the tagline.
So, lousy translation.
It's not a lousy translation, it's an idiomatic one. English speakers don't call homosexuals "magpies," so the explanation of the cardinal's comments use an English equivalent.
If an American story reported that an English-speaking cardinal had called someone a "fairy," a Dominican newspaper would also have to explain our idiom in terms their audience understood, because the literal translation would make no sense.
No, an equivalent would be “fairy” or “pansy”. “Faggot” has a much more negative, edgy connotation.
Oops -— I just realized that the text thing messed up, so the more readable version is here.
Is there a difference between fairy and faggot?
Never forget Barry Sinclair is the same stupid, arrogant, SOB who tried like hell to appoint not one, but two pro-abortion Catholics to the position of US Ambassador to the Vatican. Both times Pope Benedict put them on the first plane out of Rome and finally Barry sent over a pro-life candidate. This man is an arrogant, homosexual-loving, anti-family, anti-Christian lunatic of the first degree.
