So, lousy translation. I’m guessing “flighty” might be closer.

That said, I’m not surprised the rest of the world isn’t worshipping at the altar of American political correctness.

It's not a lousy translation, it's an idiomatic one. English speakers don't call homosexuals "magpies," so the explanation of the cardinal's comments use an English equivalent.

If an American story reported that an English-speaking cardinal had called someone a "fairy," a Dominican newspaper would also have to explain our idiom in terms their audience understood, because the literal translation would make no sense.
