Jacob Gets Ready To Meet Esau(Genesis 32-33)

1As Jacob was on his way back home, some of God's angels came and met him. 2When Jacob saw them, he said, "This is God's camp." So he named the place Mahanaim. 3Jacob sent messengers on ahead to Esau, who lived in the land of Seir, also known as Edom. 4Jacob told them to say to Esau, "Master, I am your servant! I have lived with Laban all this time, 5and now I own cattle, donkeys, and sheep, as well as many slaves. Master, I am sending these messengers in the hope that you will be kind to me."

6When the messengers returned, they told Jacob, "We went to your brother Esau, and now he is heading this way with four hundred men."

7Jacob was so frightened that he divided his people, sheep, cattle, and camels into two groups. 8He thought, "If Esau attacks one group, perhaps the other can escape."

9Then Jacob prayed:

You, LORD, are the God who was worshiped by my grandfather Abraham and by my father Isaac. You told me to return home to my family, and you promised to be with me and make me successful. 10I don't deserve all the good things you have done for me, your servant. When I first crossed the Jordan, I had only my walking stick, but now I have two large groups of people and animals. 11Please rescue me from my brother. I am afraid he will come and attack not only me, but my wives and children as well. 12But you have promised that I would be a success and that someday it will be as hard to count my descendants as it is to count the stars in the sky.

13After Jacob had spent the night there, he chose some animals as gifts for Esau: 14-15two hundred female goats and twenty males, two hundred female sheep and twenty males, thirty female camels with their young, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten males.

16Jacob put servants in charge of each herd and told them, "Go ahead of me and keep a space between each herd." 17Then he said to the servant in charge of the first herd, "When Esau meets you, he will ask whose servant you are. He will want to know where you are going and who owns those animals in front of you. 18So tell him, `They belong to your servant Jacob, who is coming this way. He is sending them as a gift to his master Esau.' "

19Jacob also told the men in charge of the second and third herds and those who followed to say the same thing when they met Esau. 20And Jacob told them to be sure to say that he was right behind them. Jacob hoped the gifts would make Esau friendly, so Esau would be glad to see him when they met. 21Jacob's men took the gifts on ahead of him, but he spent the night in camp.

Oh LORD, Our God,
How Excellent is Your Name Over All The Earth!
We Come into Your Presence With Praise and Thanksgiving.
For You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are Are LORD,
You Alone Are The Most High,
You Alone Are The One True God of Abraham!
Praise You, Lord!
How good it is to sing praises to You;
For You Are Gracious,
And a song of praise is fitting.

Dear LORD,
Jacob was right to fear his brother,
He had played some very devious games,
Tricked his older brother out of his birthright and blessing,
And caused a rift in the family.
He laid the situation before You in prayer,
But still made plans to protect his family in case things didn't go his way!.
It is right after this scheme that Jacob wrestles with You in the form of an Angel,

And, besting him, give him a new name and a new status with You.
No Longer is he "Jacob, The heel-grabbing trickster.
Now he is "Israel", He Who Wrestles With God", and the Founder of a New Nation.

Father,
We pray For Reconciliation of Broken Families,
For Brothers to Embrace Brothers,
And For Children to be reconciled With their Parents.
And We pray especially for Children, that they will come to know and serve You
And help bring about the repentance and Redemption of America.

We Ask that this will open the eyes
of people in our own Nation.

We ask for forgiveness for ourselves,
Dear Father, as we Pray for Our Nation.
We ask You to reverse the trends of evil and selfishness
that have taken hold in our own Land.
We beg that You will restore Faith in You,
The One True God,
and that Our own Nation will Once Again be Known
as one who keeps Her Promises to Her Friends and Allies,
and NOT as A Covenant-Breaker.

We Plead With You,
That Our Leaders will be Led by Your Holy Spirit
with regards to Our Own Country's Policies Towards Jerusalem,
Or That You Will Remove Them.
We Plead That Your Will be Done,
On Earth, As It Is In Heaven

We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Today's Meditation Has to Do With Reconciliation.

Families often suffer brokenness, and usually more than one person is "at fault". When Jacob heard that his brother Esau was coming (with a small army!), he was genuinely fearful, and should have been! He did the right thing by praying, but he also split up his group to protect the women and children, and prepared a huge gift of valuable livestock for his brother. Upon reading further, we find out that Jacob wrestled with an Angel all night long, and just before dawn the Angel cripples him with a mere touch. Jacob is given a New Name, "Israel", which means "Wrestles With God". Many Times in Scripture, God gives New Names to His Chosen Servants, as a way of showing His Relationship to them.

It would seem that the Big Gift to Esau wasn't even Necessary. Like the Father in the Story of The Prodigal Son, Esau, the Grizzled Old Hunter, falls upon Israel and WEEPS with joy at the Return of his wayward little brother. Let us pray that Broken Families are reconciled with such Passionate Grace.

Beautiful prayer and meditation this morning.
Reconciliation is desirable. We can seek to be reconciled with our brothers, neighbors and enemies but at the same time be prepared for the worst. Israel lives that way. They have offered and given much in efforts to bring about reconciliation with their neighbors. At the same time preparing to defend themselves and insure their survival.

Perhaps we can learn from this scripture some lessons for reconciling the races in America.
Dear Lord, we pray for Your peace to reign among all peoples. Even so, come Lord Jesus!
