This year the convention is in the St. Louis area but may I make a recommendation for 2016. Las Vegas. Forget about the gambling but I can give you one really good reason: FOOD. You won't find more fabulous food buffets per square mile than in Vegas. It is also the location of the first chocolate fountain at the Stratosphere. Oh, and they also have great convention facilities there.

The proximity to breweries with the capacity to meet the needs of the assembled Lutherans dictates that the convention remain in St. Louis.

There’s a beer shortage in Las Vegas? They give it away there. BTW, what would be the biggest difference between a Lutheran convention and, say, a Southern Baptist convention?

Actually, the two denominations are quite similar. When visiting a parishioner in his home, a Baptist preacher will immediately open the refrigerator looking for beer. A Lutheran pastor will do the same thing.

You need to do it as a joke. For example:

A Baptist preacher will only drink near beer but a Lutheran pastor prefers to be near the beer.

Southern Baptists cut ties with Boy Scouts. Is LCMS still in bed with BSA?

Like the Southern Baptist Convention, the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod has formulated and issued a statement in opposition to the Boy Scouts acceptance of homosexuals. Also like the Southern Baptist Convention, the Missouri Synod is congregational in its polity and the decision to disaffiliate in both denominations is being made on a congregation by congregation basis.

Proud to be a baptized member of the conservative Missouri Synod Lutheran Church.....originally from a Chicago suburb, now on the west coast of Florida....reporting in with an observation.

I just got back from the beach a little while ago....and was driving past the local ELCA (liberal Lutheran Synod) church just a half-mile from where I live..... and to my surprise it's now a non-denominational Christian church. A gorgeous-looking, multi-buildings church formerly with an affluent congregation, but I see that now it's Lutheran no longer.

Well, I guess I wasn't that surprised....I knew that the congregants were leaving the "progressive" church in droves as its synod policy became homosexual-driven, gay ministers, gay marriages and all that allied social justice stuff. Plus the second-to-last minister was a real airhead feminazi-type female who really accelerated the exodus just with her dour looks alone.

The national synod sent in a replacement pastor but was unable to stop the bleeding...and now 35 years of a progressively liberal ministry in our neighborhood is gone with the wind.

I'm sure my Missouri Synod has a lot of new members now....including some subdivision friends of mine who are delighted with their new synod "home".

What is the theological difference between a Lutheran and a Baptist/Southern Baptist?

For one thing, Baptists, as their name indicates, baptize by immersion, Lutherans sprinkle like Catholics. They also sprinkle babies...like Catholics, the Baptists do not believe in infant baptism, they baptize believers only.

That's it? That's the sum total difference? Hmmm, it's like gnat droppings in pepper. How does Baptism signify TOTAL immersion? Jesus did it so that was the model? Jesus also gave Peter, as the head of His church on earth, the authority, in the name of Jesus, to forgive/retain sins. The Pope had the authority to change the style of baptism.

Another thing that changed. The first groups to leave the Roman Catholic Church were those who strongly objected to the LATIN liturgy. Thus the Greek, Armenian, Russian, etc., Orthodoxies came into being.
In 1962 or so, the Pope declared, as was his authority, that the Mass may be said in the vernacular...that is, no more Latin. Over the ensuing years, most of those "Orthodoxes" rejoined the Church, since it was the Latin-only Mass that drove them away.

Also in the news was an episcopalian church in England REJOINED the Catholic Church. They had had it with gay marriages. The Catholic Church won't do it, but the Church of England will.

Anyway, thank you for your answer.

And how many of these Baptism are now accepted by the Catholic Church.

It takes three pours of water for a valid baptism:

“I baptize thee in the name of the Father (water) and of the Son (more water) and of the Holy Spirit (more water.)

Well, there's the difference. Your faith seems to take the Scripture literally. Catholicism allows the Vicar of Christ to do that. Babies are baptized. Adults are NOT dunked, even once.

You've given me the baptism difference: dunking. Thank you but that is more procedural than theological. What is the theological difference between the two? I am curious, not badgering. I really don't know.
