Huge Failure in Catechesis: Survey: only 13% of Catholics think IVF is morally wrong
Catholic Culture ^ | August 19, 2013 | Diogenes

Only 13% of Catholics--and 12% of Americans--believe that in vitro fertilization is morally wrong, according to a new Pew Research survey. 33% of Americans judge the procedure morally acceptable, while 46% say that it is not a moral issue.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith discussed the immorality of in vitro fertilization in its instructions Donum Vitae (1987) and Dignitas Personae (2008).

The survey also found that 49% of Americans believe that abortion is morally wrong, while 15% say it is morally acceptable and 23% say it is not a moral issue. 64% of Hispanic Catholics and 53% of white Catholics surveyed said that abortion is morally wrong, though among “white Catholics who attend Mass at least once a week,” the figure rises to 74%.

22% of Americans--and 24% of Catholics--said they believe that embryonic stem cell research, which involves the destruction of human embryos, is morally wrong. In addition, 21% of Catholics said that they believe that adult stem-cell research is morally wrong, despite Church pronouncements that it is morally licit.

You are looking at those eggs and sperm as man does, not as God does.

This is not natural, and many little babies are lost.

Let’s all send this to the Young Adult coordinators in our parishes.

Not being negative or deprecating your article but parishes can have all the Young Adult coordinators in the world but if the parents aren't around to inculcate from DAY ONE and aren't around to validate and reinforce, then all the Young Adult Coordinators in the world are useless.

There are just too many working mommies. Those women seem to HAVE to have their "trophy baby" but then return to work, CONFIDENT that the caregivers (not grandma, auntie or any family member) are just swell. All the good, decent Latina caregivers simply CANNOT take the place of mommy.

It DOES seem to be an urban phenomenon. I see it ALL THE TIME in my city in California. I do speak fluent Spanish and those Hispanic caregivers DO teach their clients' children to speak Spanish...even if it isn't the best Spanish.

It's a no-win for American babies and children...my opinion.

I’d say the biggest problem with IVF is the fact that the “extras” are either thrown out, frozen for years, or experimented on.

Those "extras" are our citizens, TRULY the most innocent and vulnerable. There WILL be hell to pay for those women who do this...and their spouses for putting up with it.

If the parents elect to abort, then what the difference in what you wrote? Just asking.

Both are morally wrong.

So if a married woman who can’t conceive in the womb goes forward with IVF she and her husband are wrong. Okay. Got it.

Good points — I was coming from the point of the young adult making a decision for herself/himself. But you are right, they need that foundation!

I did have an abortion when I was very young and my soul suffers to this day.

If you have Christ as your Savior you don't need to suffer, you can rejoice that your sins have been forgiven. Satan wants you to suffer, to believe it was too big a sin, it isn't.

Doctors are in effect practicing veterinary medicine./sarc.The difference is in the physical quality of the fetus. A bull and cow whose sperm and egg have been carefully selected. The man and/or woman who resort to this desperate measure probably have genetic defects that they pass on to their child. Sad.

And how many others died or were left in the can, frozen in time?

The method involved the creation of several lives which often never mature. That’s because the mother’s womb will take accept the, or you get multiple births, usually more than the womb can easily support. To do this, you must as in the case of abortions, disregard the nature of the unborn child. It becomes the means to an end. That end may be a good one, but what about the means?

Did you miss the, "tough cookies"?

Doesn't know and doesn't care. Folks like that figure Jesus Christ approves of killing a few infants now and then as long as you keep one you like.

After all, how much different is it than the millions of "contraceptive" induced dead infants women are responsible for by taking the pill and other abortafacients rather than an alternative?

People who gave Satan an inch now have him as their ruler, it's that simple.

none, didn't you understand it was done with both parents and no extra's were fertilized....there are many types of procedures done.....you get the prize for being the snark of the day, and ignorant to boot. As I said in my first post sweet cheeks, tough cookies for your opinion..

For me, once implantation takes place, I do not believe in aborting any of the fetus. Planting too many in the hopes of being able to abort some is the deliberate killing of an unborn child...many disagree with me and many think the same way I do....the only position for a legit abortion is a tubal pregnancy which can kill the mother and the zygote has no change to implant and form a pregnancy..The tube will rupture when the zygote gets large enough to blow out...both die...

I just skimmed the replies, so I apologize if someone mentioned this already.

In addition to the issues regarding the embryos, etc, there is also the issue of how the husband and wife create the child. It is not unitive. The child is made in a petri dish.

Yes, I have. Horrible.

We live in a world of stupid women/wives and uninterested men/husband, it seems.

I wonder if those pregnancy stats correlate with divorce rates or fatherless children.
