Catholic Word of the Day: REPROBATION, 09-04-13
CatholicReference.net ^ | 09-04-13 | Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary

Featured Term (selected at random):

REPROBATION

God's eternal resolve to exclude certain rational creatures from eternal happiness. As taught by the Church, God has eternally predestined certain persons, on account of their sins, to rejection from heaven. Always understood is that God wants all human beings to be saved, but he does not wish to save those who, by their abuse of divine grace, freely separate themselves from his love. (Etym. Latin reprobare, to reject, condemn.)

SALVIFIC WILL

The desire of God that all humankind be saved. God's general or universal will is the salvation of humanity on condition that a person dies in the state of grace. It is called God's antecedent and conditioned salvific will. His special or particular will considers the moral state of each person at the time of death. Here God unconditionally desires the salvation of all those who depart this life in the state of grace. It is called God's consequent and absolute salvific will. This coincides with predestination. Insofar as the consequent, unconditional will of God refers to the expulsion of a person from heavenly happiness, it is called reprobation.

"There are two kinds of persons in the world - the kind who say to God, "Thy will be done," and the kind to whom God says, sadly, "Thy will be done."

- paraphrased from C. S. Lewis
