.- A five-hour prayer vigil in St. Peter's Square for peace in Syria, initiated by Pope Francis and to be held this Saturday, will be the largest the Vatican has seen in years, according to the Holy See’s press director.
“I’ve been here for 23 years and I remember gatherings for peace in Assisi, but I don’t remember anything with this dimension in Saint Peter’s Square,” Fr. Federico Lombardi told a gathering of journalists Sept. 5.
He recalled a peace gathering in Italy and prayer vigils held after the Sept. 11 attacks, but none were of the degree that this will be, he said.
Pope Francis made a global petition on Sept. 1 asking that everyone, regardless of religion or location, to fast and pray during the whole day of Sept. 7 for world peace, particularly in Syria.
“There are so many conflicts in this world which cause me great suffering and worry, but in these days my heart is deeply wounded in particular by what is happening in Syria and anguished by the dramatic developments which are looming,” the Holy Father said Sept. 1.
During his first public general audience since his summer break on Sept. 4, he renewed his invitation.
While the Sept. 7 fast is not binding on the faithful, Pope Francis' repeated exhortations to participate in the fast indicate how close the issue is to the heart of the vicar of Christ.
His call for prayer and fasting comes as nations, including the United States, discuss the possibility of military intervention in Syria, following reports that the Bashar al Assad regime used chemical weapons on its own civilians, killing, according to the U.S. government, more than 1,400 persons.
Pope Francis' prayer vigil will be preceded by the hearing of Confessions, beginning in the evening at 5:45 in St. Peter's Square. There will be 50 priests available for Confession under the colonnades of the square.
Then at 6:30, Pope Francis' Sept. 1 allocution calling for the day of fasting and prayer will be read to introduce the vigil.
Pope Francis will begin the prayer at 7:00, and the Veni Creator Spiritus will be sung.
Four Swiss Guards will carry a statue of Mary, Protectress of the Roman People, starting from the obelisk in the square, accompanied by two girls strewing flowers before her.
The Roman Pontiff will then begin praying the rosary, invoking the intercession at each mystery of Our Lady, Queen of Peace.
There will then be a meditation by the Pope, followed by a minute of silence and Eucharistic Adoration.
The vigil will also include readings from the Bible, and responsorial prayers for peace.
After Adoration, there will be three minutes of silence followed by the recitation of the Office of Readings, part of the Liturgy of the Hours.
At 10:15 there will be a period of extended, prayerful silence, and the vigil will conclude later with Benediction.
In solidarity with the vigil of the Diocese of Rome, many Churches worldwide will be holding similar events.
The Archdiocese of Madrid announced that all Masses said this Saturday will be offered for peace in Syria, and Bishop Demetrio Fernandez Gonzalez of Cordoba asked that church bells be rung at noon to remind Catholics to pray the Angelus to Mary, Queen of Peace.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, announced that the anticipated Mass at his cathedral on Sept. 7 would be said for the intention of peace in Syria, and added that in his diocese “I wish all our Catholic people to abstain from meat this Friday (Sept. 6), and add this intention to their prayers at Sunday Mass.”
In the Archdiocese of Denver, a vigil of Adoration will be held at the cathedral on Sept. 7 from 7 p.m. until midnight.
Since the message is directed specifically towards Russia, we can certainly attest that country has known peace since the 1984 consecration.
In a quotation written by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict) he says, "Sister Lucia personally confirmed that this solemn and universal act of consecration corresponded to what Our Lady wished Sim, està feita, tal como Nossa Senhora a pediu, desde o dia 25 de Março de 1984: Yes it has been done just as Our Lady asked, on 25 March 1984: Letter of 8 November 1989). Hence any further discussion or request is without basis.".
In an article in Inside the Vatican by Delia Gallagher, it was mentioned that Sister Lucia had a special vision that confirmed theaction corresponded to Our Lady's requests. Cardinal Ricardo Vidal of Cebu in the Philippines also said that Sr Lucia had told him, "If the consecration had not been done in 1984, there would have been nuclear war in 1985".
Sr. Lucia said John Paul II accomplished it. End of matter. We now need to focus our prayers for peace on the Middle East.
I'm trying to fast today, in preparation for our parish Holy Hour for Peace tonight (actually it's going to be two hours) and already I am realizing how shallow my resolve is, how feeble I am with this prayer and fasting business, how prone to every kind of fault.
So I'm praying for my own conversion. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
You can attest to whatever you want; but I don't attest to any of the above.
Have you not heard of the first and second Russia - Chechen Wars in 1994 and 1999, respectively?
Secondly, Our Lady granted a period of peace to all mankind, not just Russia.
And please tell me exactly when Orthodox Russia converted to Catholicism?
8. ISN'T IT TRUE THAT THE CONSECRATION OF RUSSIA WAS DONE IN 1984 AND THAT THE "FALL OF COMMUNISM" PROVES THAT THE CONSECRATION WAS EFFECTIVE AND THAT RUSSIA IS NOW CONVERTING?
No, it is not true. We know it is not true because:
(1) On March 25, 1984, after the consecration of the world, Pope John Paul II said twice that Our Lady of Fatima's request for the consecration of Russia was not done.
(2) Soon after the attempted Consecration of 1984, which did not mention Russia or involve the participation of the world's bishops, Sister Lucia stated it was insufficient because it did not meet the requirements specified to her by Our Lady.
(3) Since 1984 the moral and spiritual state of the world has obviously grown far worse: In the past 14 years there have been 600 million abortions, and wars have broken out all over the world. Mercy-killing and homosexual acts have been "legalized". In Russia itself a new law has just been passed which discriminates against the Catholic Church and in favor of Islam, Buddhism, Judaism and the Orthodox churches which forcibly occupied Catholic parishes under the Communists. Thus it is clear Russia is not converted to the Catholic Faith as Our Lady of Fatima promised would happen if Her request was done.
(4) There have been very few conversions to Catholicism in Russia over the past fourteen years. In all of Russia today there are only 300,000 Catholics--much less than one percent of the Russian population. By comparison, after Our Lady appeared at Guadalupe, Mexico in the 16th Century, more than 7 million Mexicans converted from paganism to the Catholic Faith within nine years and Mexico became a Catholic country.
Anything else you wish to assert?
We are talking about Russia, not the world. Mary asked that Russia be consecrated. All the evil that sprang from that country has now infiltrated the rest of the world. However, in Russia, peace reigns; christianity has been restored; the government is encouraging its citizens to have children, etc.
I'll repeat: Sr. Lucia said John Paul II accomplished it. End of matter. We now need to focus our prayers for peace on the Middle East.
In case you missed this.
I'll repeat: she said no such thing!
As far as participating in today's Assisi III of praying with false religions: count me out!
Let me understand this, you are against praying the rosary and benediction. You reject readings from scripture, the Litany of the Saints and ancient hymns like the Tantum Ergo.
I've encountered many protestants over the years who share that view but you are the first catholic ... or are you a sedevacantist?
Aren't you the mindreader now!
Pope Francis extended his invitation to fellow Christians, followers of other religions and all men of good will, to participate, in whatever way they can, in this initiative.
Humanity needs to see these gestures of peace and to hear words of hope and peace! said the Pope.
"Humanity" needs to see these gestures? What happened to God?
Nice photo! I’m glad to see there’s no beach ball this time.
Well, if you look at the photo I posted, you can see that He was front and center, where He belongs. Even the two Muslims who flew to Rome from Syria, dropped to their knees in worship ... or do you have a problem with that, too? Just curious but to which denomination do you belong?
No. I'm not a mindreader. You posted: "As far as participating in today's Assisi III of praying with false religions: count me out!"
That indicates to me that you did not watch the live coverage from Rome. There was no "praying with other faiths". Hence, you are not aware that the prayer vigil began with the recitation of the Rosary, reflections on Scripture, and readings from the writings of St. Therese of Lisieux. You are not aware that the monstrance was placed on the altar in full view of those gathered in St. Peter's Square, with additional recitations from Scripture followed by pauses for silent prayer. You are not aware that before the vigil began, 50 priests heard confessions. You are not aware that ancient catholic hymns were chanted. You are not aware that Benediction took place.
One does not need to be a mind reader to conclude that someone who intentionally refused to participate, based on a presupposed assumption of how the vigil would be organized, rejects these outward signs of catholic faith. As a practicing catholic, it saddens me to hear this.
Dang, you are on a mind reading role! Tell me what else I'm not aware of!
Worship what? The Triune God?
Yes! When one kneels before the Eucharist, they are worshipping the Triune God. Still have a problem with this?
Still, it would have been better to use a conditional word each time like "seems" or "evidently."
Never had a problem with it. But Muslims do have a problem. Please give evidence of Muslims kneeling before the Eucharist.
In truth Russia is a Christian country now. Both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches are part of the family tree of the Christian.
Consecration was done by Blessed John Paul II in 1984. The subject is now CLOSED.
Vatican tv, EWTN, Salt & Light ... and several others provided LIVE coverage today. Markomalley watched the LIVE feed and commented above.
