"Has Anyone Wept?": Pope Francis and the Cry for Peace

by Kathryn Jean Lopez

Pope Francis has called on Catholics around the world and “other Christian brethren,” “brethren of other religions,” and “men and women of good will” to join him in fasting and prayer this weekend. As the United States debates military strikes against Syria, the Holy Father pleads for peace.

(snip) In his appeal, Pope Francis said:

I appeal strongly for peace, an appeal which arises from the deep within me. How much suffering, how much devastation, how much pain has the use of arms carried in its wake in that martyred country, especially among civilians and the unarmed! I think of many children will not see the light of the future! With utmost firmness I condemn the use of chemical weapons: I tell you that those terrible images from recent days are burned into my mind and heart. There is a judgment of God and of history upon our actions which are inescapable! Never has the use of violence brought peace in its wake. War begets war, violence begets violence.

you must be strong in this world...strong....and you must be willing to fight if need be....

but we can't fight every single battle and we don't even know which side we're supposed to be on.

but for me, any side that the little baby daddy is on is the side I am against....

Well, I have ... I do. It’s just a certain feeling, as I take it. Cynically, we might take it as fear.

So many Protestants think that Jesus is going to wisk them away out of the quagmire developing all over the globe. I have cried, but I know what is ahead for all. Afterwards is the only hope I have, whether I live to see it or not. Maranatha!

““brethren of other religions,” and “men and women of good will””

So are the heathen gods and the good “energy” of infidels going to answer this prayer?

Never has the use of violence brought peace in its wake.

He does great things and then he goes and says things like this which are impossible to square with Catholic teaching on the legitimate use of arms in defense of innocents. Should Suleiman been allowed to invade Rome?

He can condemn this action without condemning ALL actions, no?

He's very sloppy in his logic.

Catholic teaching allows for force to protect against loss of life. Pre-emptive strikes are allowed only when there is imminent danger of attack. I am not sure the administration has made the case on Syria. The Pope sees this more as an act of retaliation.

Do you know why we think that way???

1Th_1:10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

Yes. It is explained in 2 Thessalonians 2:3&4 “Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god, or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God.”

The first resurrection is explained in Rev 19 and 20 when “those who had been beheaded because of the testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark upon their forehead and upon their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.”

“The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. This is the first resurrection.” Again, this is the first resurrection. There are 2 resurrections, one return, which occurs after the tribulation. We do not have to fear the wrath of God fulfilled by our own Savior, but the Christian is expected to take up his cross and die just as He did. Those living through the tribulation are sealed on their foreheads (Rev 7:3). Also, “if anyone leads into captivity, to captivity he goes [like Daniel]; if anyone kills with the sword he must be killed. Here is the perseverance and the faith of the saints.”

There is far more than one resurrection in the first resurrection...
