Christians in Syria were fleeing one of the oldest Christian towns in the world on Sunday, after regime forces failed to win it back from Islamist rebel fighters.
Rebel groups, including a branch of al-Qaeda, have taken control of Maaloula, one of the few remaining villages where the language of Christ is still spoken, residents and activists reported.
Our army, the Syrian army, has failed us, said Sister Antoinette, a nun from Maaloula, claiming the regime had forsaken control of the town. We called the army, we begged them to come inside Maalouola and save us but they stayed outside. They sold us because we are a minority. They abandoned us because we are Christians.
The Syrian government denied that it had lost control Maaloula. The state television channel SANA announced a series of victories against the terrorist invaders.
But video footage posted on YouTube on Sunday from the picturesque town told a different story: rebel fighters are shown walking through the streets of the village. A commander points out damage to the walls of the towns ancient St Thecla monastery, which, he says, was caused by government tank fire.
Nestled deep in the mountains outside of Damascus, Maaloula was long known as a place for peaceful reflection. St Thecla, who is supposedly buried in the convent, was a follower of St Paul who fled to the village in Syria to avoid marriage, having taken an oath of chastity. It is said that the cleft of rock in which the convent is placed opened up to allow her to escape her pursuers.

Nuns do not lie.
They’re in my prayers.
The plan from day 1 should have been a joint UN declaration with Russia signing on to send armed UN peacekeepers into these villages to defend them, and let the rest of the country duke it out. Kerry and Barry have these poor people’s blood on their hands.
I read when this just started that the “rebels” were trying to provoke an army attack so that they could then blame the resulting death and destruction on the army. They’ve gotten PR savvy.
Sad to say, there’s no good way out for these poor Christians. Nobody will come to their aid.
Send in the Russian Marines
The language from which Jesus’s words ought to be derived.
If we get involved in that mess, hopefully we can cut Assyria (different from Syria) and Kurdisatan out of their existing nations.
Pray for ALL Christian believers of the Middle East. Pray for the CONVERSION of ALL Muslims to Christ.
Israel, be ready for Christian refugees from Syria.
Better that they flee unless it is by the Holy Spirit.
The reason I say that it must be by the 'Holy Spirit' is that Saint Ignatius of Antioch warned Christians of volunteering to be martyred. There was one such Christian who openly proclaimed his Christianity, and then later decided to eat of the 'Pagan Food' and renounce his Christianity. As for Saint Ignatius of Antioch (Early Church Father), the Romans 'discovered he was a Christian', and he was martyred in the Arena (being fed to the wild beasts...)
