More Young Women Grabbing Their Rosaries for Convent Life

MISHAWAKA, Ind.--It's a nationwide trend and it's happening right here in Michiana. More and more young women are foregoing the temptations of night life and men and grabbing their rosaries instead.

It's a path for twenty some year old girls that will never end in a break-up.

"It was a lot of back and forth,” said Janet Hilger who joined a convent two weeks ago. “I actually was dating for a while before entering."

More and more young girls are opting for a relationship with the best man of all: Jesus Christ.

“I'm 27 years old and when I was 25 is when I really strongly felt the calling towards religious life,” said Anna Hoefer, joined convent two weeks ago.

She’s not alone. Many of the new sisters remember back to high school- a time where they pondered their life paths.

“I'm 26 years old and I started having thoughts about religious life in high school,” said Hilger.

These are the sisters of Saint Francis of Perpetual Adoration. Their lives are now in sync, but they came from very different places.

"At the beginning of high school I wanted to be an interpreter,” said Sylvi Pultorak, joined convent two weeks ago.

But now she's interpreting prayer, and her fellow sister no longer needs her checkbook.

"I was working as an accountant in a big-four accounting firm in Indianapolis," said Hoefer.

Good for them for pursuing a relationship with the Lord, but what’s wrong with monogamy and waiting until marriage?

More than what? Have they really run the numbers and found that “more” local girls are essaying religious life? More in 2012 than in 2011, and more in 2011 than in 2010, etc.? “More” as a percentage of the area’s single women? Show me some graphs!

Nothing is wrong with marriage, in theory. However, marriage is a different vocation.

people have to admit that the expected path of our young women is not a good one....give out on the first date, abort, use contraception, be a "fun"date to everyone and then of course, get your boobs enlarged preposterously because that's what the men want....Hooters awaits, the goal of every man's dtr to be oogled by middle aged, fat, balding guys with perverted thoughts....Booorah!

similarly, I believe there's a minority of men out there who are sick of being pushed into the constant idolatry of sex and conquest...I wish we could match up the good young women with the good young men..

Ok, where is the pic of Helen Thomas, the type of women who would do this.

I agree with you. I’ve suggested “old maid with cats” to my daughters.

I wish some wealthy Catholic would fund a truly great convent in the US, part of which would be devoted to creating craft products for sale, to support their order.

Wines, beers, and distilled spirits are a rather futile pursuit these days, because of the competition. Perhaps creating gold and silver religious artwork and icons, both for churches and sale to pious laity.

With modern tools and things like laser engraving, they could craft artwork finer than was made in the Renaissance.

They’re choosing to marry Jesus in a sense.

In a sense, I suppose, but isn’t the Church in general the Bride of Christ?

Eh, I shouldn’t complain.

This isn’t specific, but at the end of the article it says:

So she followed God’s direction and ended up here, with five other new sisters, who make up the biggest incoming group in 40 years.

“It is very exciting to be a part of the biggest class,” said Hilger. “I knew that here it was one of the biggest classes but I didn’t know it was a trend nationwide.”

A very beautiful woman, natural beauty in those days.

Actually, Jesus and St. Paul prefer the unmarried state, for those who are called to it.

We saw her last weekend. She’s a lovely 75-year-old lady now.

Thanks. I’d have searched for some stats myself, but I’m crippled without my real computer.
