Francis is going evangelical, as though that were a bad thing.

Listen guys and gals, Francis is being more honest than most of the earlier popes. He actually wants the Holy Spirit to MOVE before he does. If you want him to gin up some more authority outside of that, as if the earthly tail could wag the divine dog, you’re likely going to get sorely disappointed.

And yes I am a Crazy Evangelical, but I am one of those who does not simply saw off the Roman Catholic branch of Christianity as something unprintable. And the very REASON I do not thus saw it off, is because paradoxically I don’t echo your sentiment about Christianity being men’s religion but rather being God’s affair of restoring heaven to hellbound sinners who don’t deserve it, that all men are called to celebrate daily with their lives. I am therefore very careful about what I accept as Holy Writ. The works that evangelicals know as the bible, and subsequent forthtelling that illuminates these scriptures further without fundamentally changing them, are just about all that can be truly counted on. All else carries the scent of men, of “tail wagging the dog.”

Oh and don’t forget... the keynotes of existence as God maintains it are love, grace, joy. Suffering and loss is made to fit into that context. We don’t try to shoehorn love, grace, and joy into a larger context of suffering and loss which is how a lot of Christians (in all branches of Christendom) act even while mouthing theology that is nominally contrary. How you act speaks the loudest about the kind of God you believe in.
