Skip to comments.Cardinal Burke: No Communion for Nancy Pelosi and Pro-Abortion Politicians
Posted on 09/23/2013 12:03:11 PM PDT by Morgana
Catholics and pro-life advocates of other religious persuasions have wondered for years why House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, who has been an ardent abortion activist for years, continues to receive communion.
In a new interview with The Wanderer, a Catholic newspaper, Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke, prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura in Rome, sheds light on Pelosi and communion. He issues a call for pro-abortion politicians to be denied the sacrament saying that Catholic Canon law must be applied to them.
From the interview:
Q. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, when recently questioned at a press briefing about the moral difference between what Dr. Gosnell did in murdering a baby born alive at 23 weeks as compared to the practice of aborting a baby moments before birth, refused to answer. Instead she is reported to have responded: As a practicing and respectful Catholic this is sacred ground to me when we talk about this. I dont think it should have anything to do with politics. How are we to react to such a seemingly scandalous statement? Is this a case where Canon 915 might properly be applied? [Editors Note:Canon 915 of the Churchs Code of Canon Law states that those who are obstinately persevering in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to Holy Communion.]
A. Certainly this is a case when Canon 915 must be applied. This is a person who obstinately, after repeated admonitions, persists in a grave sin cooperating with the crime of procured abortion and still professes to be a devout Catholic. This is a prime example of what Blessed John Paul II referred to as the situation of Catholics who have divorced their faith from their public life and therefore are not serving their brothers and sisters in the way that they must in safeguarding and promoting the life of the innocent and defenseless unborn, in safeguarding and promoting the integrity of marriage and the family.
What Congresswoman Pelosi is speaking of is not particular confessional beliefs or practices of the Catholic Church. It belongs to the natural moral law which is written on every human heart and which the Catholic Church obviously also teaches: that natural moral law which is so wonderfully illumined for us by Our Lord Jesus Christ by His saving teaching, but most of all by His Passion and death.
To say that these are simply questions of Catholic Faith which have no part in politics is just false and wrong. I fear for Congresswoman Pelosi if she does not come to understand how gravely in error she is. I invite her to reflect upon the example of St. Thomas More who acted rightly in a similar situation even at the cost of his life.
CLICK LIKE IF YOURE PRO-LIFE!
In July, Pelosi was at it again with another crass comment on the abortion issue. This time, she went after pro-life Republicans saying they need a lesson in Sex Education 101. She attacked pro-life legislators in state legislatures across the nation who are passing new pro-life laws to limit abortions in places like Texas and North Carolina, saying they needed a lesson on the birds and the bees.
The recent comments come after Pelosi put her foot in her mouth during a press conference, calling the battle to keep late-term abortions legal sacred ground.
If one could also arrange no oxygen for the Pelosi-wench, that would be even more helpful.
Have no fears, SF voters...it’ll not change her IQ one iota.
I’ll believe it when it happens.
Time to excommunicate some archbishops and cardinals!
Sadly, Archbishop Chaput has indicated that it is the responsibility of the communicant to stay away from the Communion Rail....
-- from the thread Will Denver Catholic Archbishop finally enforce Canon 915?
"...there's a question about whether this canon'' the relevant church law "was ever intended to be used'' to bring politicians to heel. He thinks not. "I stand with the great majority of American bishops and bishops around the world in saying this canon was never intended to be used this way."
-- from the thread [Archbishop] Wuerl: Why I Won't Deny Pelosi Communion
Albany Bishop Howard Hubbard says it is "unfair and imprudent" to conclude that Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his girlfriend, Sandra Lee, shouldn't receive Communion simply because they're living together.
-- from the thread Bishop: None of your business (Hubbard rejects Catholic expert's criticism of Gov. Cuomo)
[Archbishop Timothy Dolan] also does not outright deny the sacrament to dissenting Catholic lawmakers, but he is seen as an outspoken defender of church orthodoxy in a style favored by many theological conservatives.

PS. I've been lurking FR now for weeks looking for the new pope's comments to be analyzed. Hardly nuttin!
If he thinks following the conscience of a Muslim, atheist, or Hindu gets you to heaven, we just got bigger problems added to our buggy in the church cafeteria. Now he says we have to back off our support for life and man/woman marriage? Either he is totally screwed up or his language skills are really wanting. I've already had people "explain" what he supposedly said, then I go back and read it again and am still doubtful. IMO, we will have openly sodomite priests and Pelosi will be made a saint in the next few years. A Jesuit pope carry's with it more baggage that most seem to realize.
You win the award for the Hyperbolic Post of the week.
Me, too. I have not understood why all of them have not been kicked out. I respec my SB heritage a whole lot more than Catholics. I had a guy in choir who moved out of town many years ago. Word got back to us that he had got up in front of his new one, said he was a homosexual and was kicked out right then. That is what should happen. We had no clue.
We came thattttt close.
After reading these kind of cross waving stories for 40 and 50 years while watching the Catholic church give glorious rewards and burials to these flagship American Catholics, we lose interest in this kind of noise making.
The Kennedys and Democrat party/movement leaders are the Catholic royalty in America.
There are lots of threads and hundreds of posts/comments. Many of the comments post links to great analysis such as these ....
At least 2 entire Southern Baptist Churches - ENTIRE CONGREGATIONS - were “disfellowshipped” here in Texas within the last several years merely because they would not satisfy SBC leadership that they upheld the biblical view of homosexuality and enforced this doctrine in their congregations. Good riddance.
Good for the Cardinal, but he’s a minority.
Canon Law is not subject to dispensation due to politics.
What a load of crap from the majority of Cardinals.
This is proof that the current corrupt Catholic hierarchy has turned the Church into a secular institution that is mainly worried about income and earthly power, not salvation.
It's all about the money; and power. The love of mammon....
Well, Fancy Nancy! If it is sacred ground to you and you happen to think that it should not have anything to do with politics,
then why in the hell do you continually endorse the politically inspired and politically delivered Roe v. Wade?
Pelosi, you are a supreme touch bag.
(damn spell check)
There were others, too, such as these:
I'm sure the Lutherans and Methodists saw no problem 15 years ago.
This is a personal journey for every Catholic. Everyone has to ask themselves where that "red line" is for them. of course, there will be many that move the red line at will to jive with some childhood wish they may carry and believe things aren't changing. IMO, Africa is closer to church teaching today that even Rome. This is worldwide! NOW IMO, until proven otherwise, we have a liberal pope that is keen on making changes. I read somewhere that God is never changing. Let's see if the changes are needed. Pelosi getting cut off,....good! Telling a woman it's ok to EVER kill her baby,....not good. Can't we all just get along?? Not likely.
Have some faith, at least more church clergy are speaking out! This time a cardinal. Pray that next time it’s Francis who says it!
The Cardinal is a breathe of fresh air, however, he’s shoveling $hi% against the tide.
It applies to ALL Christians.
LMAO!! We only recently got speelcheck, now it’s a disdainful feature!!
Pope Francis is simply is center-right.
Pope Francis’ position on morals issue are like any other Popes before him. Nothing will change in the Catholic Church. No abortion of any kind, no unnatural marriage, no women ordination. It’s amazing that someone could think he’s a liberal. He’s a Catholic priest, the Bishop of Rome specifically, and will abide by the Cathecism of the Catholic Church. His style might be less confrontational, but orthodoxy remains the same.
You apparently don’t understand exactly what a Jesuit is. Look them up and see that they have been into almost every form of mischief in most continents. The latest form has been to prop up communists in South America. Where is Francis from?? It has waaaaay more to do with left politics than Christ.
His record is clear on liberation theology and his record is clear on fighting for Catholic moral doctrine. All Jesuits are not left wing crackpots.
Pelosi and Biden just met with the pope and took communion at the Vatican, that is prestigeous to average Americans, so is the treatment of the Kennedys as royalty.
As a faithful Catholic, I agree the Kennedy funerals and Vatican receptions are a disgrace, yet I take heart in the Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura in Rome quite publicly making known a policy we both would agree with.
Don't you agree?
Pelosi and the vice president both just met with the Pope and took communion at the Vatican, only months ago.
This is a routine that we have watched for generations along, we’ll have to see if anything changes.
Pax tecum, chuckles.
