I know we have beat this to death and it is not as fun as talking about Bourbon and cigars ... or Doctor Who.

Without even reading his further comments, my instant response is that there's really nothing more that it's useful to say.

I was a Protestant for 59 years, so who am I to say, but it’s FR, so here goes:

He talks about Jesus all the time. That’s good.

The “other son” in the prodigal son story was pissed at the party the sinning brother got when he returned (and asked forgiveness) while he had stayed and worked.

What makes today’s situation harder for “other sons” is that there is no return asking forgiveness. It seems our father has gone to the whorehouse and said- No big deal, it was small minded to worry about such things.

This causes our lost brothers to fill with pride that somehow their sinful actions were fine all along. They did not need to come back home.

It was hard to be that “other son” back then-but I understood. Today I just don’t understand...

The Church is Catholic. That means she is bigger that Pope Benedict and bigger than Pope Francis. I love them both.

We are so damaged by our political leaders, who are always scripted and rehearsed, that we forget what real authority looks like. It looks exactly like our last three popes.

**This Pope is articulating a beautiful message of mercy towards sinners, asking us to join him, and all a lot of us can say is “Damn! He is throwing us under the bus! I won’t play! He is giving hope to the Commonweal types and I won’t play!” I think many of us should just be ashamed of ourselves on that score.**

Finally someone said what I have been feeling (bolded above).

**And yet, for all that, his first and last words were “forgiveness.” Why? Because he knew that no sin, or collection of sins, no matter how awful, defines any of us to our core. We are all redeemable and none of us are totally evil. We are bigger than our sins.

God always waits for us to come and ask for his mercy and forgiveness. God bless those who do.
