Residents of a Florida city who have had "God Bless America" signs posted on their front lawns for months have been ordered by local officials to remove them.

MyFoxTampaBay.com reports that the First Baptist Church of Bartow distributed some 300 signs to residents following a Fourth of July celebration. The city only permits residents to display signs during major holidays is starting to crack down on the displays.

Post me on this as it evolves. I hope they win as a lot of municipalities have these dumb ordinances on their books as well.

Vote in a new City Council and have the law changed...surprise - surprise people...it’s a city ordnance - get it over it...or change it through the electoral process...stories like these are a distraction from reality - there are solutions other than some newspaper penning out a emotion piece to garner division.

I saw this on the news this morning. I don’t get it. I can understand NO signs in some restricted communities but “God Bless America”? Don’t get it.

"They can have those signs out on holidays that are relevant,"

When is not asking God to bless America NOT relevant ?

My resolution would be to place an 4ft x 8ft sign on my roof. Then tell the city to bite me.

What did everyone expect? we pay rent on our own land. Think ya own it? stop paying the taxes and see how long you get to stay.

As to this out of control city, if there is no HOA and it’s my land, GFY.

If the signs were supporting some liberal politically correct cause, such as homosexuality, would the signs be coming down?

Every day that we wake up alive is a holiday. Gratitude to God. Every day that we still have some freedom left from the Obamanation is a holiday. So the government decides what is a holiday and how long it can be observed?

What if they attach the sign to the side of their house?

What if they put the signs inside a window?

What if they paint the sign on their house?

I’d like to be the first to go to jail for displaying my American flag. Throw Lincoln pennies on the mayors lawn. Go to jail for displaying my countries flag?????? Didn’t we fight wars so we could wave them and all???? Who’s the enemy now - it be us.

PS - got an email from a friend who said no more FAA or FCC computer testing; all US government certification tests are on hold. So if a pilot needs an upgrade test, forget it.

It’s a cardboard and wire sign. It’s not made to last for more than a couple of weeks.

...stories like these are a distraction from reality - there are solutions other than some newspaper penning out a emotion piece to garner division.

Thank you this observation. The news media often plays some of us around here like a fiddle.

What one has to be aware of is the law of unintended consequences. "God Bless America" signs are laudable but if plastered around town constantly without maintaining the signs, these become unsightly and the message gets lost.

It also opens up the possibility for another group that might want to plaster "America Bless Allah" signs all over the place in retaliation.

If you want to do this sort of thing, there are such things as bumper stickers. You want a lot of signs in the community to broadcast your views? Buy more vehicles and do more driving.

FReegards!

Can have it on the 4th of July but....?

These people should tape and listen to themselves.

We had the original 4th of July (in part) so we don’t have to listen to governments who tell us when we can or can’t say things they might disagree with.

Full speed ahead with the signs people.
I dare them to do anything.

The first amendment to the Constitution prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion, or impeding the free exercise of religion"

All states are bound by the Bill of Rights, as per SCOTUS ruling, and even a ciy council is so bound

It would seem to me that this is a law meant to keep the area from looking cluttered and commercial. Originally, that would be a good idea. BUT There should be an exception for patriotic signs. If their local bigwigs don’t cave to the people’s wish, the people should put up flags on their lawns.

Must be lots of snowbirds in Tampa Bay who brought their liberal politics with them.

No wonder Florida is generally not regarded as part of the South (Panhandle excepted).

OBTW, any sign with `America’ & `Allah’ in it would probably read, “Praise Allah! Death to America!!”

;^)

A lot of Florida cities (mine included) have VERY STRICT rules on signs. Our local paper has been carrying stories for years of people fighting sign regulations. You need approval, it has to be a certain size, it has to be only 30 days, blah blah blah.

Businesses get tortured especially. I remember one boutique that was practically run out of business by the ordinance. Their sign was a cute “fat lady” lounging on a garden bench, holding a boutique name sign. Sort of cartoony and cute. The city forced them to take it down, because there was no way it could be brought into code.

When push comes to shove, people vote for these city boards, and like certain restrictions, never really thinking through the consequences. A classic example of you get what you vote for.

Taxpayers who put signs on the property they own and pay taxes on should be considered exercising their first amendment rights. I hope every tax-paying homeowner goes out and gets a sign, even if it has nothing to do with the content of the signs the City is currently targeting. Enough is enough!

When push comes to shove, people vote for these city boards

The problem is, few people actually pay attention to board elections......That's why the Hitler-wannabes wind up on the boards, same as HOAs.

All very reasonable options.

Of which I would avail myself if my town ever decides to do something so ludicrous.

All the more reason to go out and vote on these “less important” elections.

Several years ago a friend and I were dismayed by the very liberal woman in a position, I can’t remember what it was, but she was very leftist, out of keeping with the area - but she kept getting elected, even though people didn’t seem to like her personally. My friend (as a homeschooling lesson) went up and down several streets with her children talking to homeowners about the official and making them aware of some the officials votes and actions. For instance, the official stated she was far more concerned with the rights of young kids getting incarcerated, than with the spike of crime in the area. Blunt just like that.

She lost the election by 15 votes. What a lesson for the kids.

No, no, no .... tampering with a mailbox is ... and if someone desires to demand that you do something about what is on your mailbox, you can tell them to go to hell ... and if they decide to DO something ... get it on film.
