So when Francis’ teleprompter makes statements on faith and morals, will it be considered infallible?
To: Greetings_Puny_Humans
Well, doesn’t that open up a whole ‘nother can of worms?

Well, you've got a good point there. I am embarrassed that he would bet himself be , ah, blued and tattooed like that, like a bumpkin that just fell off the turnip truck.
Let's hope --- no, let's PRAY --- he has learned from this experience.

Teleprompters don’t make statements, and I doubt Francis uses one, anyway.

Why are we surprised? Our lamestream media makes stuff up all the time, “fake but accurate” and all that.

I don’t think the intention was to give an interview. His Holiness wanted to talk to that atheist, Scalfari, informally. A tape recorder would have destroyed the very atmosphere of informality that apparently both parties wanted.
This in in line with this Pope’s personality in general: he doesn’t want a wall around himself, and doesn’t particularly care if people he reaches out to leave records.
So the author’s outrage about Scalfari’s journalistic practices is misplaced. We certainly have “wind blowing” and should expect more unscripted talk from His Holiness. Is that the proper outrage to have? So far I haven’t seen anything in the papal chats that deviated from the Catholic faith.

I would add that our obligation, — by “our” I mean every Catholic other than the Pope, — becomes to point out the catholicity of His Holiness’ remarks and correct the left-wing and other anti-Catholic distortions that inevitably will come. Wishing that the Pope had a different personality or different priorities can be fun, but like any fun it is not a productive use of our time.

More. Im just a teeny, two-bit, part-time internet guy on the very outer fringes of what could possibly be considered evangelizing the atheists, but even I would know enough to show up for a discussion about my faith without a tape recorder.

It’s never occurred to me to bring a tape recorder to any discussion!

I think Simcha is missing the point. What kind of knucklehead pope lets himself get used this way? Why does he so desperately need to go it alone that he disdains resources at his disposal whose express purpose is to prevent screwups like this? How hard is it to have a Vatican camcorder record the interview in its entirety and post it to youtube? Perhaps several versions, each with subtitles in the major languages? With this being a condition for ANY reporter being granted an interview?
Why can't the Pope bypass the whole hostile press establishment by posting video sermons on the Vatican website?
