Government Shuts down Catholic Services on Navy Base; Church locked; Priest threatened with arrest

In the wake of the government shutdown, despite provisions in the Pay Our Military Act, Catholics at Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base in Georgia are being denied religious services. The Catholic priest who serves this community has been prohibited from even volunteering to celebrate Holy Mass without pay, and was told that if he violated that order, he could be subject to arrest. Protestant services continue to take place. Only Catholic services have been shutdown.

This is getting scary. It’s like living in Poland under Communism. No one, but no one, should be denied a priest.

Why are the Protestant services being allowed to continue?

For the same reason that Hitler didn't start loading Jews in boxcars until after he'd been in power for more than six years.

I remember Rush Limbaugh told everyone that they needed to see the movie, THE GREATER GLORY; a story of how the Mexican Gov´t in 1922 rose up against the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.

Why are the Protestant services being allowed to continue?

Because they have active-duty Protestant chaplains. There's been a shortage of active-duty priests, so the services were paying for civilian priests to do the job as contractors.

Anyone with any sense of religious propriety or any vague attachment to the Constitution must view this as a horrific abomination, and a completely impeachable violation of the Mahdi’s oath of office.

The contractor priests have been volunteering, i.e., not getting paid. The US government will not let a Catholic priest conduct services for FREE! Obamagabe is using the “no-money for contracting” as a convenient reason to attack the Catholic Church once again. He knows he can get by with this because he has cafeteria “catholics” like Biden and Pelosi and the rest of these hypocrites to get on national TV and back him up. Here’s what should happen to every one of these Catholic Church-hating “catholics”.

Livius, my guess is that there is at least one active duty Navy Protestant chaplain on the base. Here is why there are no Catholic services: “Fr. Leonard is a civilian Catholic Pastor contracted by the Department of Defense (DoD) to serve as a military chaplain at Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base in Georgia.” Fr. Leonard is not ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY but a civilian contractor. And the way the bh0 lawyers are reading the ‘pay our military’ is to make it ‘hurt the military’ as much as possible, thus denying contractor chaplains, while contractor technicians, such as computer IT folks ARE working for the DoD inside the Pentagon (I saw them last week)

This is actually a golden opportunity for Catholic priests. Find the nearest place off post with a park, and offer to give a service there, after sanctifying the ground, and ask congregants to bring folding chairs.

Bring some poles and white engineer tape to cordon off the area, so that people do not casually wander into it.

Almost guaranteed it will be a very memorable service, and gives the priest an opportunity to give a rip-roaring sermon and fire up his congregants.

Active duty Catholic chaplains are not being sent home, only Contractors (by the way not getting paid to start with).

Protestant chaplains, both active duty and contracted, are free to conduct services.

King Obamagabe comes for them next.

Why are the Protestant services being allowed to continue?

Because their Pastors are members of the Navy.

Civilian contractors are always treated differently.

Always have.

*******
Then hold the services off-base using another church’s facility. I’m sure other denominations would be glad to help out. And it shouldn’t be any problem finding a retired priest or volunteer in the community.

Of course none of these measures should be necessary in the first plance. The administration is godless.

From Amendment I of the US Constitution:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...."

Right there, first line, in the Bill of Rights. The relative importance should not be overlooked.

Even though it means that Muslims may openly serve and be allowed to observe their faith while members of the US military. Perhaps Muslims should be given the option to NOT serve in the military.

Consider the actions of Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali, who joined the Nation of Islam, and later became a Sunni Muslim. Of course, he was later arrested and convicted of draft evasion.

The Catholics on this base should take a note yesterday from the vets who tore down the barricades at the WW2 memorial. The priests should defy the order and those in attendance should protect the priests from arrest. It’s hard to believe any court in this nation would so blatantly tear down the 1st amendment......but you never know.....it is worth risking arrest for.

I am going to assume that there is an active duty Protestant Chaplain. Therefore he is paid under the Pay Our Military Act. Unfortunately, the Catholic Chaplain's pay is not covered by that act.

“Why are the Protestant services being allowed to continue?”

This article doesn’t say it, but a little investigating shows that this priest’s contract was set to begin October 1, but since the shutdown began that day, his contract is not yet valid. He can’t volunteer because that is against the rules of volunteering services during the shutdown.

Are you sure that contracted Protestant clergy are still conducted services on posts and bases? If that is the case, then there is clearly religious discrimination.

The vets that marched in Washington yesterday should have been marching and raising hell about getting no VA disability payments in November if this dumb-ass government “shutdown” continues.

Thanks for the expanation. Of course, Obama won’t permit volunteers, even though Catholics, unlike Protestants, are supposed to attend mass every Sunday. That doesn’t mean they all do, unfortunately, but it’s a disciplinary requirement of the Church which Obama is making more difficult for practicing Catholics.

The nearest church is 16 miles away, and many on the base do not have their own transportation.

I would like to see a priest show up on base and defy Obama by celebrating mass. I would contribute to his bail if he were arrested. That is how you stand up to evil.
