SPRINGFIELD-The head of Springfield’s Roman Catholic diocese moved Tuesday to scuttle a silent protest by same-sex marriage advocates planned at the capital city’s largest Catholic church, calling their plans to pray the rosary for marriage equality “blasphemous.”
Advocates for the Senate Bill 10 plan to attend a 5:15 p.m. Tuesday Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception as part of what organizers describe as a “loud Catholic Presence for marriage equality” that will wrap up a daylong rally in support of the stalled legislation.
But Bishop Thomas Paprocki, head of the Springfield Catholic diocese, said anyone wearing rainbow sashes won’t be permitted inside the church.
“It is blasphemy to show disrespect or irreverence to God or to something holy,” Paprocki said in a statement released late Tuesday morning. “Since Jesus clearly taught that marriage as created by God is a sacred institution between a man and a woman (see Matthew 19:4-6 and Mark 10:6-9), praying for same-sex marriage should be seen as blasphemous and as such will not be permitted in the cathedral.
People wearing a rainbow sash or who otherwise identify themselves as affiliated with the Rainbow Sash Movement will not be admitted into the cathedral and anyone who gets up to pray for same-sex marriage in the cathedral will be asked to leave,” Paprocki said.
“Of course, our cathedral and parish churches are always open to everyone who wishes to repent their sins and ask for Gods forgiveness,” he said.
Good on ya, Bishop. I hope he has a lot of strong muscular ushers at the ready.
Why don’t homo’s start their own church? Where’s their tolerance?
Stand Your Holy Ground
Geez, I can smell where this is going. How long will it be before a gay couple sues the Catholic church for not marrying them?
Probably soon enough for me to say, “Well, that didn’t take long!”
They have, they're called "Unitarians."
This type of behavior by the “Activist” really shows how intolerant they are.
I have been vocal on these thread about not being a Catholic. However, the RC Church has the right promote its doctrine. If you don’t agree then go somewhere else or no where else as you wish.
Each individual has the right to walk their own road to Hell if they wish.
Even at the expense of the backhanded compliment, your support is appreciated. It’s more than some FReepers will do.
Good to see a bishop take a forceful stand.
The Bishop’s stand is a lot more forceful than about a decade ago when the Rainbow Sash wearers would appear in church & then remain standing in the pews after distribution of the Eucharist, showing their a** as it were.
There could be incidents. Ushers should wear rubber gloves & protect their faces. AIDS-infected saliva is a deadly weapon. Faggies have been known to bite.
St Patrick’s Cathedral, New York City 1991. ACT-UP faggies invaded & desecrated the Holy Eucharist. Look it up.
THERE’S the old Christian spirit! LET ‘EM EAT CAKE!!
They will. I expect them in our Church and others. They don’t care about tolerance, they want to force Churches to marry them like they go to bakeries that don’t want their business.
What happened to, “We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone”.
He must not have gotten the memo. After all, who is he to judge?
Station the Knights of Columbus, swords in hand, at the entrance.
In France they used to have guards stationed at the entrances of churches armed with big halberds or pikes to keep order in the church. Think they need to bring back that custom.
You just know they’ll hide the sashes until they’re already inside the church and then pull them out.
Then what’s going to happen?
Dude! Step away from the bong.
