Pope Francis is raising the spirit of the late Chicago Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, say some local and national Catholic church leaders, who see parallels between the two as the 17th anniversary of Bernardin’s death approaches.

At this date, most of us take what the bishops say about Cardinal Bernardin with an ounce of salt.
And I take what Pope Francis says with half a grain of salt.
But then again, “Who am I to judge?”
Popes are only infallible when they are reaffirming what dozens of generations have affirmed
Pope Francis may talk about helping the poor, and even mention social justice, but NOT at the expense of accepting abortion, or even homosexual marriage, which I suspect Bernadin would have tolerated, if not fully supported.
Cardinal Bernardin was identified by Malachi Martin as the “Cardinal of Century City” in his novel “Windswept House”. His Seamless Garment became the basis of Pope JP II’s Gospel of Life, which grants moral equivalency to capital punishment/the waging of war with abortion. If Pope Francis continues along these lines the Catholic prolife movement will continue to be dazed and confused.
The Vatican II Church is doing a fine job of creating confusion and heresy all by itself. It’s time to stop giving all the credit to the media.
Perhaps he doesn’t view those who wish to offer the mass of all time as “his clergy”.
I don’t think anyone is denying that Francis does do some good. Pointing out good things doesn’t necessarily wipe away not so good things.
Where did you come up with that definition of infallibility? Nothing on faith and morals and speaking ex cathedra?
Speaking extra cathedra is to act like the old English kings did and to pronounce what has always been “law.” or as a Chief Justice might in deciding what is “constitutional.” I am as leery of the Ultramontanes as I am of the Gallicans,although not ashamed to call my self a papist.
According to your definition of papal infallibility: “Popes are only infallible when they are reaffirming what dozens of generations have affirmed,” a future pope will soon have to declare:
1. Artificial Contraception is OK.
2. Homo Marriage is OK and a valid sacrament.
3. Divorce and remarriage is OK.
2. Popes have never been infallible.
All of the above statements are presently being “affirmed” by the majority of the current generation of Catholics; and by your definition, a future Pope is obligated to eventually declare them to be true, right?
The faith of eighty generations of Catholics are not cancelled by one.
