Understanding Pope Francis

Pope Francis has laid out his plans for the Church in Evangelii Gaudium (EG). Rush Limbaugh read it and has concluded he’s a Marxist. Politically conservative evangelicals fear they’ve lost an ally in the Catholic Church. The pro-gay marriage lobby and Planned Parenthood are disillusioned after reading paragraphs 66 and 213, and rightly so. Pius X Society sympathizers are on edge after reading 108. “Left-leaning” Catholics who were hoping for a female priesthood are deflated after reading paragraph 104. Mainstream media labels him a progressive. Whose side is this man on anyway?

That he’s getting the entire world’s attention is undeniable. (I was recently interviewed on Al Jazeera TV about him. That’s a first for me!) But I think most of the world, from Rush to HuffPost to Al Jazeera, has absolutely no idea how to read him. That’s because most of the world is examining the 265th successor of Peter through the wrong lens.

The Church has never fit the hyper-politicized lens the Western World has come to see all things through. We’re “right of center” on abortion and gay marriage. We’re “left of center” on immigration and the need to care for the poor. Maybe that’s because our “center” is Jesus Christ.

I care more about what Rush Limbaugh says about the Catholic Church than what Pope Francis does. I don’t even care what the pope ACTUALLY said, translated properly, either. Who has time.

Rush never called Francis a marxist. No need to.
Rush never called Fluke a pig, he never did, just a slut.

He asks us to maintain good relations with Jews and Muslims, and beckons us not to judge Islam by the violence done in its name.

>Islam isn’t to be judged harshly. Even though in the name of Islam a genocide is being committed against Arab Christians right before our eyes. On the other hand, the trickle-down theory is the new tyranny. And, people who believe in it are naive.

In general, the use of the term "Black Pope" is often experienced as a derogatory nickname given to the Superior General…

I know, and Pachón is the Superior General.

I kind of agree with you. Catholics aren’t conservatives nor are they liberals and they certainly aren’t libertarians.

free-market economics + traditional social values = conservative (American sense of the word)

populist economics + progressive social values = liberal (American sense of the world)

populist economics + traditional social values = Catholic

free-market economics + progressive social values = Libertarian

Rush should reconsider his being upset. Catholics aren’t conservatives. Maybe some Catholics, here or there, like John Paul II, are sufficiently close to the conservative position so as to make a practical alliance. But, Rush shouldn’t base his expectations on that.

He very strongly implied that the pope is a Marxist. And why not? Might as well call a spade a spade.

Francis is no Benedict, that's for sure.

I disagree. Populist economics is not required to be a Catholic. Some Catholics are conservative, some “Catholics” are liberal, some are libertarian, same as the rest of the population.

The complete sentence seems to be based on the Golden Rule (Matt. 7.12), although it is undoubtedly wishful thinking at least in terms of most Muslim countries. But Jesus also said, “Do good to those that hate you” (Matt. 5.44).

I thought Bill Clinton was the first black pope. Or was it the first black president. I can see him now bitting his bottom lip at a news conference, rubbing some little black kid on the head, and at time asking him does he have a big sister.

Bill was the first female black president.

Hillary will be the first grandma president.

Most Catholic I go to Church with are economically conservative as well as socially conservative. And so is
Pope Francis. Liberals on the other hand are for massive free government giveaway programs, sodomite “marriage”, murdering their own unborn, and doing away with anything to do with Christianity. Libertarians are small government conservative and at the same time they are social liberals.

Judge Napolitano who did one of the hit pieces on Pope Francis, claims he’s a “devout Catholic”, but lets his libertarian leanings trump his faith when he says sodomite “marriage” is a “civil right”. Apparently he could care less what the Bible teachs about the sacrament of marriage.
Anyone whose politics trumps does not have much of a faith to start with.

Hating is one thing, but wanting to convert or execute is something else altogether.

our respect for true followers of Islam should lead us to avoid hateful generalisations, for authentic Islam and the proper reading of the Koran are opposed to every form of violence.

That alone tells the world that this guy is a deceiver...

Perhaps you know this. As a Cardinal, Pope Francis said that civil unions were a right (because of the tie of so many benefits and rewards to marriage and the overriding concern for equal rights).

You sound like Pope Benedict XVI. He said Christianity is not an economic system and it is not a political system.
