Understanding Pope Francis

Pope Francis has laid out his plans for the Church in Evangelii Gaudium (EG). Rush Limbaugh read it and has concluded he’s a Marxist. Politically conservative evangelicals fear they’ve lost an ally in the Catholic Church. The pro-gay marriage lobby and Planned Parenthood are disillusioned after reading paragraphs 66 and 213, and rightly so. Pius X Society sympathizers are on edge after reading 108. “Left-leaning” Catholics who were hoping for a female priesthood are deflated after reading paragraph 104. Mainstream media labels him a progressive. Whose side is this man on anyway?

That he’s getting the entire world’s attention is undeniable. (I was recently interviewed on Al Jazeera TV about him. That’s a first for me!) But I think most of the world, from Rush to HuffPost to Al Jazeera, has absolutely no idea how to read him. That’s because most of the world is examining the 265th successor of Peter through the wrong lens.

The Church has never fit the hyper-politicized lens the Western World has come to see all things through. We’re “right of center” on abortion and gay marriage. We’re “left of center” on immigration and the need to care for the poor. Maybe that’s because our “center” is Jesus Christ.

Then Rush probably considers Jesus a Marxist.

Nevertheless Limbaugh said it whether quoting Pope Francis himself or other media.

How absurd, here is the quote (I notice you have not shown a link to where Rush SAID that the pope is a Marxist):
This is just pure Marxism coming out of the mouth of the pope.
If I were to say **that is just pure Catholic propanganda coming out of the mouth of Salvation"** that would not be calling you a propagandist, just that at that moment propaganda was being expressed.

Disclaimer: That is NOT a personal attack, just an example.

It's amazing how leftist twisting of the words of Limbaugh are spouted when their ox is (rightfully) being gored.

So the pope believes in Marxist principles? So?

So what if the pope believes illegal insurgent invading criminal aliens should be allowed to continue to break the law?

The Church has been around for 2000 years. The rest of us, the media, Rush Limbutt included, are chump change.
The Church will be around a LOT longer than any of us, our country included.

He is indeed a "towering champion."

Pope Benedict, the "Panzer Pope," was a TOWERING intellect. It was NO surprise that he came so far in the Catholic Church. Cream always rises to the top, even in our own jaded anti-Christian, anti-religion world.

Pope Francis is the first Jesuit Pope.

Not on point, but I have always been AMAZED that there WEREN'T more Jesuit popes. They ARE considered the intellectuals of the Church. Go figure.

For my penance today, I was told to offer it up for Pope Francis. Interestingly, this was the 4th or 5th time (from four different priests and three different parishes) I was told to do this. The same was never mentioned to me regarding BXVI or JPII, that I can recall. Pope Francis needs our prayers, and evidently our priests [in this area] know this well.

The story is a lie and was thorough debunked.

The source you referred to me does not say that the ABC News piece is a lie. It says that as Pope he will not reverse church teaching on homosexual unions. How about you try again. This time, if you identify a source that refutes or at least attempts to refute the ABC News item, I’ll acknowledge it. Otherwise, I’m taking my marbles and going home.

The ABC news piece came from a source who would not provide any evidence whatsover. In otherwords he made it up. Liberals of course ate it up after he mad it up. Never happened. Why would you believe a word that came from a liberal website? No transcript exist of the former Pope approving of homosexual unions because the conversation never happened. Only in the minds of liberals who want to destroy the Church.

http://www.ncregister.com/blog/edward-pentin/cardinal_bergoglio_hits_out_at_same-sex_marriage

The following teachings of the Catholic Church are unchangeable: (a) valid marriages are between a man and a woman and are indissoluble, (b) homosexual acts are intrinsically evil and always seriously wrong, (c) homosexual unions can never constitute valid marriages, (d) valid marriages between baptized Christians constitute a sacrament, and (e) homosexual unions do not constitute a sacrament. Pope Francis and all of the future Popes will continue to teach that homosexual acts are always morally wrong and that same-sex unions cannot constitute valid marriages. Pope Francis will not allow Catholic priests to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies or same-sex union ceremonies because these ceremonies would constitute a scandal and lead the faithful into error regarding same-sex marriages and same-sex unions.

I think we have agreement.

1) Pope Francis opposed legislation for the Republic of Argentina to extend to civil unions the language or special rights reserved for marriage. This is what was emphasized in your most recent link.

2) When he was a Cardinal, he supported civil unions based on the principal of equal rights. This is what was emphasized in the ABC News piece. I distinguish what the man did as a Cardinal regarding civil unions from what he might do as Pope. What he did as Cardinal was consistent with Catholic doctrine, but is not itself doctrine.

To get back to original point, Catholics find themselves sharing much in common with the political left on economic policy and much with the political right on social policy.

As a Cardinal, the man who is Pope Francis said he was a Peronista. This is the political party formed by Juan Peron at the time that the Catholic Church promoted fascist political economy as implemented by Mussolini, Franco and Peron, in Quadrilismo Annus. Today, there is no party in Italy or Spain based on fascism (the political spectrum in those two countries involve the Socialists and more radical parties on the left, and free market-oriented parties on the right). But, in Argentina, the Peronistas continue to rule. The majority of the Peronistas, however, do not embrace the social policies of the Catholic Church. Hence, Argentina, under a Peronista government, became the first Latin American country to recognize gay marriage.

The term “black pope” meant that in reference to the Jesuits.

While Pope Francis is as a priest is a Jesuit, his spirituality is much, more Francisian.
