Fox News columnist rips Pope Francis, loses Catholic News Service gig
Adam Shaw, an editor for the Fox News website, has been taking a lot of heat, even from some conservatives, for a rip-roaring assessment of the pope’s recent apostolic exhortation. His column is titled: “Pope Francis is the Catholic Church’s Obama – God help us,” which gives you a sense of where Shaw was coming from.
But if Shaw’s Fox job is safe — hey, when Rush Limbaugh is blasting the pontiff anyone else looks tame — his other gig, as a film and video game reviewer for Catholic News Service, is over as of yesterday.
Tony Spence, editor in chief of the wire service, which operates under the aegis of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said he had been “very pleased” with Shaw’s work, which included an analysis of the comics book industry. Spence said he knew that Shaw worked for Fox but it never caused a conflict — until this week. Spence wrote in an email:
“(W)hen he penned the recent piece on Pope Francis, comparing him to President Obama, and presenting it as an op/ed, he seriously compromised his credibility as an objective Catholic journalist for CNS. Had Adam merely reported on the pope’s apostolic exhortation, even citing unflattering sources, there would have been no problem. However, Adam’s caustic condemnation of the exhortation and of Francis himself, one of the key figures we cover daily with objectivity, fairness and certainly charity, left me little choice but to end his service with us.”
Spence wished Shaw well “at FoxNews.com and in all his future endeavors.”
I know this will stir up a nest of bees but I have lost all respect for the Catholic Church over the abortion issue. I cannot take them serious that they are against abortion when Catholic politicians who are pro abortion are still considered Catholics and not publicly denounced by the Catholic Church.
That’s what happens when you dis the boss.
Adam will be thinking “oops” soon, if not already. There comes a time when you give a good and kind old man some room for error, especially when his political experience has been narrow, compared to your own, and dangerous and corrupt.
The Catholic Church has ALWAYS been against abortion. It’s not the Church who can censor pro-aborts — it’s their Bishops. You blame is misplaced.
Instead of blasting the entire Catholic Church — write to each of the bishops where that politician lives.

So no one has any control over the Bishops? I am not a Catholic so why would a Catholic Bishop listen to anything I have to say? I bet if the Pope publicly denounced the Catholic politicians that openly support abortion by name people would take note.
I don’t mean to stir up anything either, ...but,...I have to say, the only ones who still pro abort Catholics “Catholic” are the pro aborts themselves and also those who don’t know any better. Just “is”.
A question of what the meaning of “is”, is.
Sadly, most Protestant churches reference abortion little as well.
Don’t forget to write to the Bishop of Rome.
It would be satisfying, even fun, to see a nice, noisy censer come down on the head of these scandalous public and political figures, whose full time hobby horse is to be seen and heard parading as a Catholic, so they can appear to be a reliable authority in bashing and distorting the beliefs of the Church.
These people have long ago excommunicated themselves from the Catholic Church, which means they are no longer in communion with the Church.
ExCatholics are just that, until which time they admit their scandal, their sin against the Church, their grave error, repent and do penance that is as public, to the same degree as their error.
Somehow having doubts about the Pope will compromise his objectivity when it comes to films, comics and video games?
“Journalistic objectivity” is compromised by not being 100% sycophantically supportive of everything the Pope does.
Just because you aren’t Catholic doesn’t mean you can’t write some letters to tickle their consciences. A protestant calling them their apparent hypocrisy on the matter of pro-abort politicians might be the the last straw, as it were. Public excommunication is a legitimate use of their teaching authority to keep others from falling into the sins of abortion.
I would suggest keeping it to abortion where their is a clear church position that they are not upholding and keeping any peculiarities of where you disagree with Church teaching to yourself. If you try to make any doctrinal points that disagree with the Church your point on abortion will be lost.

They sure seem to be Catholics in good standing, meeting with their Pope, taking Communion at the Vatican, elaborate and very public, church funerals.
Unfortunately since Vatican II the church has become weak and for the sake of “getting along” has lost it’s true identity. We have accepted revisionist history and that is mistake number one. With this a vacuum has been created and bishops and priests have become ignorant or compromised. This is why Catholics aren’t attending mass. The vacuum caused by the weakness has allowed evil to advance and corrupt. For the world to be saved She must be saved and brought back strong.
Personally I’m fighting this battle and I shall NEVER give up on humanity for we have been entrusted to save it.
Is he excommunicated too? Pretty neat how this guy just opens his mouth to give an honest opinion shared by many honest observers and loses his job, but when Catholic Pro-Abortions go to hob-nob with the supreme pontiff, they don’t hear a whimper.
