ABC Falsely Reports Pope Removed “Outspoken Critic of Abortion” From Vatican Court
Life News ^ | Matthew Balan

Posted on 12/17/2013 4:18:33 PM PST by Morgana

Tuesday’s Good Morning America simply didn’t have its facts straight in their rush to portray Pope Francis as a crypto-liberal.

Amy Robach hyped that the pontiff “removed an outspoken critic of abortion and same-sex marriage from a powerful post within the Church. Conservative Cardinal Raymond Burke…was head of the Vatican’s highest court.” Robach then asserted that “this move is seen as reinforcing the Pope’s vision for a more inclusive church.”

However, Cardinal Burke is still the prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura – the equivalent of the Supreme Court for the Catholic Church. The Pope actually declined to renew the Wisconsin native’s membership on a different consultative body at the Vatican – the Congregation for Bishops. [MP3 audio available here; video below the jump]

Robach’s news brief is in the same vein as Time magazine’s recent Person of the Year cover story about the Bishop of the Rome, where writers Howard Chua-Eoan and Elizabeth Dias. Chua-Eoan and Dias contended that supposedly, “in a matter of months, Francis has elevated the healing mission of the church…above the doctrinal police work so important to his recent predecessors.”

CBS This Morning – one of Good Morning America’s Big Three competitors – has also given wild, left-leaning spin about the pontiff. Correspondent Charlie D’Agata trumpeted that Francis was “one of the most progressive popes in modern times” during a September 13, 2013 report. Over a month earlier, his colleague Dean Reynolds bizarrely wondered if the Pope was “breaking with the Vatican” due to his widely-misrepresented “who am I to judge?” reply about people with homosexual attractions.

In a Monday post, Thomas Peters of CatholicVote.org’s “American Papist” blog took aim at the “hyperventilating speculation” about Pope Francis’ move with regard to Cardinal Burke. ABC’s misleading reporting about the change is just the latest example of what Peters called attention to.

The transcript of Amy Robach’s news brief from Tuesday’s Good Morning America on ABC:

AMY ROBACH: Well, a new shakeup at the Vatican – Pope Francis has removed an outspoken critic of abortion and same-sex marriage from a powerful post within the Church. Conservative Cardinal Raymond Burke, the former archbishop of St. Louis, was head of the Vatican’s highest court. Well, this move is seen as reinforcing the Pope’s vision for a more inclusive church. Today, he spent his 77th birthday visiting with the homeless.

I'm not a Catholic, but thinking about the headline makes me want to ask, "So what if he did?" It's a Vatican council, is it not? And, the Pope is the big-guy over the Vatican. I'm not familiar with Vatican bylaws and rules, but I'm confident there is nothing in there about 'Good Morning America,' having a vote in the goings. Maybe the GMA team should drink a nice Italian roast blend of mind-your-own-prissy-business.

Never mind that the report sounds like a bucket of crap and may simply not be true.

Pure wordplay on Life News' part. The pope did remove Cardinal Burke from the Congregation for Bishops which oversees the process for the selection of bishops in Europe, the Americas and Oceania and the pope did elevate Cardinal Wuerl to the same Council.

The author should be ashamed of his biased journalism for not even mentioning Donna Wuerl.

American Catholic bishops and their failure to excommunicate

Donna Wuerl is the Queen of the above Bishops and Pope Francis personally picked him to help vet future bishops.

Wuerl is diametrically opposed to Cardianl Burke in terms of holding up Canon law. I think this Pope is also adverse to upholding Canon law.

Dear Mrs. Don-o,

The right is not hyperventilating to note that three prelates who insist on orthodoxy in action as well as words were removed from the Congregation for Bishops while Wuerl was added.

My parish is in the Archdiocese of Washington. Having seen him up close and personal, I can tell you, he talks a good game, but many of his actions (and failures to act) undermine orthodoxy in the Church.

He makes Cardinal McCarrick look like a saint.

Pope Benedict lamented the “filth” in the Church. Pope Francis embraces it!

This article is really informative, and here but an exerpt:

“First, Pope Francis has not hid his intention of making the curia more efficient. He appointed Cardinal Wuerl as a new addition to the Congregation for Bishops, someone whom Pope Benedict had already placed trust in when he appointed Cardinal Wuerl as the U.S. guardian of the Anglican Ordinariate.

If you asked me to pick who has a better working knowledge of the makeup, demands and expectations of the American episcopate right now I would say the state-side Cardinal Wuerl, not Cardinal Burke who has been in Rome for half a decade at this point. So from one aspect, this is a move towards efficiency.”

Oh come on. They used the wrong description. How many of us knew what the Congregation of Bishops was? So they called it the Vatican Court. To them, they probably think all of these groups are major. Just plain ignorance of how it works.

And guess what? He *was* removed (along with others) from a very important, critical position! We’ve now got a liberal leaning Congregation.

But the excuses and the media blaming continue.

It’s not “true and correct”. He wasn’t “removed” from the Congregation of Bishops, his membership thereof was “not renewed”. There is a completely different meaning there, albeit rather subtle a difference.

Also, he is still part of the “Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura – the equivalent of the Supreme Court for the Catholic Church.”

Sounds like to me he’s still in the more important position.

Maybe I should put the following with more emphasis because, after rereading the thread it seems more than a few aren't understanding this is a (yet another) glaring example of our leftist media hard at work deceiving people: (all cute pictorial references to propaganda ignored, the following isn't propaganda or spin it's simply the truth)

He wasn’t "removed”from the Congregation of Bishops, his membership thereof was "not renewed”. There is a completely different meaning there, albeit rather subtle a difference.

I'm sorry if some can't see that difference. Maybe some are allowing themselves to be victimized by the media.

Liberals often advance their goals in the name of efficiency.

That's hardly an excuse for putting someone of Wuerl’s ilk on the Congregation for Bishops.

I agree on Burke vs Wuerl --- bad, bad choice for the Congregation for Bishops. However, ABC had it just plain wrong when they said Burke was removed from the Apostolic Signatura --- and that's his day job, the big one, and he's still in it, big time.

I weary quickly of curial politics, especially the paranoid style of inferring always the worst intentions, of everybody, all the time. This is Romanità at its most devil-pleasing.

For all we know, Burke asked to have some of his bureaucratic gabbing-coffee-and-consensus jobs trimmed, so he can spend more quality time doing top-level Canon Law at the Signatura. We don't know any different, do we ?

This constant crunching and spitting out sunflower seeds, which passes for Vatican 'analysis," is just histamine-itchy clericalism. I say to hell with it.

ABC News; 12/17/2013 (the same day Matthew Balan throws a hissy fit and neo-cats continue to do so):

>>Pope Francis announced changes in the influential Vatican office that evaluates and nominates candidates for bishop around the world.

Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington was appointed Monday to the Congregation for Bishops. The pope also reconfirmed Cardinal William Levada, the former archbishop of San Francisco and former head of the Vatican’s orthodoxy watchdog office.

Some members of the congregation were not reconfirmed. Cardinal Raymond Burke will no longer serve in the office. The former St. Louis archbishop had been a member for several years. Burke retains his position as the head of the Vatican high court, the Apostolic Signatura.<<

So, ABC News corrected their error the same day? That's good to know. I bet those who caught the first ABC report and missed the second, number in the millions.

That's just the nature of the technology. It's why you might as well skip the "breaking" news --- not just religious news, but any news. It's exceedingly likely to have lots of huge inaccuracies in it, if not false clear through.

Please don’t miss the main point of OP article.

ABC, by stressing “Outspoken Critic of Abortion” tried to make it sound as if Pope Francis did not like Cardinal Burke’s strong pro-life stance, and that is simply not true.

I’m not saying you do, but many people seem to play into lib media’s hands.

I know that Franky "opposes" abortion in a formalistic way, but I'm not sure his heart's really in it. Either that, or he's pretty stupid and ignorant.

But I can't read minds, so it's an open question to me.

Dear Running On Empty,

Hey, I'm just trying to go with the flow of this pontificate. The new pope seems to like informality, spontaneity, shooting the breeze, making comments that folks shouldn't try too hard to make sense of every word (or, at least, so his spokesman has said to us).

A more informal pope needs a more informal name for casual conversation.
