What do times of disaster teach us about ourselves and society? Is our moral center what it ought to be?
In 2005 I worked as a volunteer at a shelter for people displaced by Hurricane Katrina. We tried to console confused, hungry, frightened people who had been picked off the roofs of their houses in New Orleans and transported to San Antonio, Texas.
One young woman sat on a cot staring aimlessly. In obvious shock, she ignored the activity swirling around her. I stopped, leaned down and asked her if I could help. She looked up with eyes filled with despair and asked, "What happened to my baby?"
I never knew what happened to that woman or if they ever found her baby. Since that time I have often thought about how human life can be degraded by the destructive force of natural disasters. Even more disturbing is the reality of how easy it is for human beings to devalue each other.
It's vital that we maintain the right perspective.
Civilization's thin veneer revealed in disasters
Working in a shelter for victims of Hurricane Katrina was a study in how the veneer of civilization hides the possibility of chaos. There were many encouraging examples by scores of volunteers who simply showed up and worked, at times without supervision, to unload trucks of food and water, set up cots and assist the tired and hungry refugees.

I don't dispute any doctrine of UCG. In fact I proudly embrace each and every one because they're biblical and were the practice of 1st century Christians.Nope, not even close. They represent a very recent money cult.
The organization is fairly new, but the doctrine is biblical and modeled after the practices and beliefs of 1st century Christians.
“...but the doctrine is biblical and modeled after the practices and beliefs of 1st century Christians.”
Bzzt, wrong again.
What differences do your responses make? You are not disputing the teachings of the UCG, only the fact that I used an article from CARM to expose them. But, all Christians reject groups which deny the Trinity, and have for all ages.
I fully embrace the teachings and doctrine of UCG because they're biblical and were the practice of the 1st century church.
I reject discussing them with you because you exhibit ignorance of the organization and your habit has been to tear down and destroy rather then discuss.
As for whether or not Im Matt Slick, the Catholics here have accused me of being James White. Why not add another name to my legend?
That's not an answer. IF you are Matt Slick then it's in your best financial interest, based on the CARM website, to put all organizations that disagree with your philosophy in the worst possible light.
I fully embrace the teachings and doctrine of UCG because they're biblical and were the practice of the 1st century church.
“Let’s try this again....”
You should have given up the first time.
“I reject discussing them with you...”
You would lose any debate in which you attack the Trinity and assert your rubbish about joining the “God family” and whatnot. My aim was just to warn other Freepers that the source of this article was a church known to be a religious cult.
Mission pretty well accomplished, since you’ve stopped accusing me of being in error about what your religion teaches.
“That’s not an answer. IF you are Matt Slick then it’s in your best financial interest, based on the CARM website, to put all organizations that disagree with your philosophy in the worst possible light.”
My legend grows! LOL
Thanks...I get it... I understand your position.
You're in error on a number of points of course but from past discussions I know that you're not interested in discussion. You are the living embodiment of what Christ warned about in Matthew 7:6.
From the Catholic EWTN list of Cults:
Worldwide Church of God - Leader: Hurbert W. Armstrong
Jesus is a part of the godhead (God is a family) and men can become like Jesus and part of the God family - Sons of God.
They do not believe in a closed godhead (TRINITY). The Holy Spirit is not considered a person, but the Father and the Son work through it.
Derivate cult - International Church of God. Leader: Son of Herbert, George, was disowned by his father and started this group that believes the same, but claims that the Worldwide Church lost its authority when Herbert divorced his wife.)

Ping worthy.
It is nice to see that you are using GLAAD techniques against another freeper. A real conservative would politely express an opinion and then leave it up to the individual to make up their own mind.
Preppers’ PING!!
Hat tip to carriage_hill for the heads-up!
Are you serious?
We could be asking the very same questions about you.
What a prefect example of the pot calling the kettle black.
For that matter, GPH only referenced his post in great detail as opposed to posting an entire thread that is only excerpted forcing those who want to read more to click on the link.
FOTFLOL!!!
Of course it's not respected by those whose errors it's exposing.
What a no-brainer.
Thanks for giving it even MORE credibility.
GPH is not the one who is impolite. The one doing that is throwing mud hoping to get it to stick to discredit GPH for exposing his cult.
Do you support the UCG that you are defending it?
I didn't realize that excerpting a post was so "bad". If you care to look at my posting history (look on my homepage for a link) you can see that I rarely if ever do that. But of course I suspect that's not the real issue here....
Oh boy...nice question clearly born out of Christian love and concern.... :-)
I've been on FreeRepublic since April of 1998 (almost 16 years) and have posted dozens and dozens of Christian based articles. I've seen people come and go who want to tear down me and the church of God. I've been "exposed" more times than I can count.
In that time I've learned that the only thing types like GPH are "exposing" is that they have nothing positive to offer in way of the gospel message or what Jesus Christ can do to change our lives and our hearts. Instead they offer destruction, hostility and acrimony.
