"Could you compile a spreadsheet?"

Yeah and post it so all can see who you deem unworthy of consideration based on your own personal prejudices...it'll be interesting to see who, but not the why...

So folks like to cause trouble, and then when others respond claim they are suffering for Christ.

Bullseye, Gamey.

“But so many churches/people condemning other people is the exact reason I don’t go to church! I just don’t, and I guess never will understand, why so many Christians must act holier than thou. “

The common thread that keeps many people from attending any church.

Your post reminds me of my shortcomings in the eyes of God, my humbleness (or lack thereof) and how far I still have to go.

Over the last couple of years, I have resolved to make sure to read a post twice or three times before posting it, and not to attack someone personally if there can be found a way to put forth a criticism w/o making it personal.*

Thanks for your post.

*all bets are off for my criticisms of the Posting Police. They richly deserve any criticism they get from me and I am God’s instrument ;-).

I have a friend and her husband who have actively been looking for a church for a few years now. They get recommendations from other people. etc. then they attend a few times. They still haven’t found a home church for the reasons I stated. Her response is.....who needs that?

No flaming from me....I think you're right. As conservatives, we need to embrace the precious freedom of religion we are blessed as Americans, to enjoy. Just because someone doesn't share my particular ‘brand’ of religion doesn't give me the right to demean them. So, if you're going to get flamed, we can share the ointment.

You post something on a public forum and expect people not to post their opinion of it?

Pretty much confirms my theory that the church which benefits most from the "holier than thou" types is the church of stay at home and skip the whole thing.

Which is tragic, in my opinion, because organized religion can and does do a lot of good by supporting fellow believers.

I can't imagine a just God doing any of the following:

  1. Telling Mother Theresa she's going to hell because transubstantiation is only figurative and symbolic and not a literal change of the sacrament to the body of Christ.
  2. Telling a Mormon, who otherwise lived a righteous life, that they are going to hell, because their concept of Jesus Christ, as the son of God, is different from the mainstream view that he is actually God in a different form.
  3. Telling a psychopath who murdered, maimed and committed all sorts of other unspeakable acts, that they are going to heaven because they uttered words of confession just before the trap door on the gallows was opened.
  4. Telling the "heathen" (including my Native American ancestors) that their ancestors were condemned to eternal hell and damnation because they had no opportunity to accept Jesus Christ.

By no means a complete or exhaustive list, but you get the idea. I'll defer the final judgement to the man upstairs.

Who is this condemning? I find FreeRepublic to have a great deal more civility than most other forums

I second that. This is the only place I have found that you can debate religion, politics, and philosophy on fairly deep subjects without getting called names.

You have to be careful who you talk to. But that's why proverbs says in chapter 26 verse 4 and 5:” Answer not a fool according to his folly,
lest thou also be like unto him. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.”

If I were to compile and post a spreadsheet, it would only encourage those worms to ooze to the surface.

Just do a little of your own research to see who posts the most bigoted religious threads and then pings their amen chorus to chime in. You will get your mental list quite quickly because the ooze around together.

Catholics and Mormons seem to be the most popular targets of said worms.

Is this about Mormonism?

If so, don’t worry the truth shall set you free. And FR is about truth. It’s our mission. Wouldn’t have it any other way.

God bless.

James 3
8
But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

9
Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

10
Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.>>>

James said no man can tame their tongue, that obviously includes Christians, and since it is even easier to put it in writing there is a lot of it.

Paul said some things that i do not think was proper about peter even though they were both Christian.

I guess i see it a little different, i see so many scribes and pharisees and so many who think of them selves as all knowing but i do not think of any one as animals.

And i do think these discussions are some what beneficial because we are more apt to tell it like we think it is rather than going along with something the Bible plainly said is wrong.

For instance Jesus tells us to pray to God in secret but you can hear many preachers praying for a quarter of a mile.

But would i go to a preacher and tell him that? No but i will say it here.

I don’t know you and haven’t seen you interact here at the forum, but that really doesn’t matter much to me. There’s truth in what you have written here and it’s important to separate that truth from the individual.

I have seen first hand a lot of very ugly commentary and name calling regarding public figures, political enemies, etc. I thought Christianity was a pillar of conservative values but I have to admit I have read so many offensive comments I have questioned whether I should continue. A recent thread about Katy Perry went south after only 1-2 comments. I don’t understand the vicious treatment of her. She is a person who apparenrtly lost her faith and only one person in that thread had anything charitable to say about her siutation.

I love this site. It’s where I come to get conservative news and thought. I think we can do better and I try to say so whenever I have the opportunity.
