After a schism, a question: Can atheist churches last?

LONDON (CNN) - The Sunday Assembly was riding high.

The world’s most voguish - though not its only - atheist church opened last year in London, to global attention and abundant acclaim.

So popular was the premise, so bright the promise, that soon the Sunday Assembly was ready to franchise, branching out into cities such as New York, Dublin and Melbourne.

“It’s a way to scale goodness,” declared Sanderson Jones, a standup comic and co-founder of The Sunday Assembly, which calls itself a “godless congregation.”

But nearly as quickly as the Assembly spread, it split, with New York City emerging as organized atheism’s Avignon.

In October, three former members of Sunday Assembly NYC announced the formation of a breakaway group called Godless Revival.

That place would be astounded to hear an Acts 17 verse 23 sermon.

22So Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I observe that you are very religious in all respects. 23”For while I was passing through and examining the objects of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription, ‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.’ Therefore what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you. 24”The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.

I’m not sure. Can meat-eating vegetarians last? Inquiring minds want to know. How about communist capitalists? Or blind seeing-eye dogs?

The classic aphorism by the Buddha was “The things of G-d are unknown, and unknowable, so why argue?”

Buddhism is not incompatible with the divine, but also recognizes that it is not necessary. Any divinity worth consideration will communicate clearly, contemporaneously, and unambiguously. Absent all those qualifications, arguments about ancient texts, ambiguous meanings, and attempts to describe an unlimited G-d with human language to limited minds, by limited minds are bound to lead to more heat than light.

LOL people who congregate who believe in nothing have a schism about nothing. Wow. The kicker is a “revivalist” group of atheists. What is the “revival”? How much more disbelief one group has?

LOL, now that is funny. That would mean the “true” atheist church has strayed from literal disbelief:)

Just take a look at his homepage. Not a serious poster loves to troll the RF threads now and then. He has a doctorate in Wikipedia quotes.

Don't make this thread "about" individual Freepers. That is also a form of "making it personal."

Discuss the issues all you want, but do not make it personal.

No, Remember the saying about prophets == bad prophet and he disappears, then the group scatters.

And it happens repeatedly.

Good prophet — Jesus Christ — and the group remains.

Hi don. Perhaps you would like to discuss how disbelief is a religion. Should these atheists be treated like religions in our public life?

Depends on your definition of religion:

“Religion is an organized collection of beliefs, cultural systems, and world views that relate humanity to an order of existence.”

Certainly Atheism seems like it would be that.

Me, I am agnostic. Until I get good evidence, the jury is still out.
