The Vatican on Friday received a request to beatify an Italian Jesuit priest favoured by Pope Francis whose attempts to evangelise China in the 16th century were thwarted by the Church.

He was accused of playing fast and loose with Church doctrine. I don't remember for sure but I think he was saying things like you didn't have to belive in divinity of Christ etc. Pushing to convert Chinese. He did use Confucian philosophy to explain Catholic dogma. He may have gone a little too far in trying to win converts.
