A nun who gave birth to a baby boy in the central Italian city of Rieti, said she had no idea she was pregnant, local media report.

The 31-year-old was rushed to hospital with abdominal pains, which she thought were stomach cramps.

The young mother, who is originally from El Salvador, reportedly named her newborn Francis after the current Pope.

I am not an expert in Roman Catholicism, but I’m pretty sure the actuvity that led to the nun being with child is not smiled upon.

Yeah except for frogs and Komodo dragons (who birth only female clones ) you don’t see many virgin births these days.

I AM wondering how long she has been in the nun business.

I can’t escape the feeling that the bast part of the story hasn’t been reported on. Just sayin’.

She had “no idea” she was pregnant. O K A Y, of course she doesn’t know. She just “fell pregnant” as the Brits like to say.

no virgin birth here...wasn't it an (medieval) R/C practice to have rich, (childless)
celibate priests; to help finance the order....but, they too are human.

If you did see a virgin birth in a human the child would always be female, a clone of the mother.

It is theoretically possible that this has happened due to some freak occurrence - an ovum being hit by naturally occurring radiation or some such - but the child would always be a girl. It is the male that supplies the gender of the child.

It is interesting she named the baby after the Pope at least she didn’t name it Francis Junior.

All laughs aside. I am glad mother and baby are OK. Sin is sin and all sin forgivable. she is not the first nun to have a moral lapse. I’ve certainly had my share of those

Having been pregnant three times, it is inconceivable that someone could NOT know they are pregnant.

There is simply NO not feeling the kicking in the ribs and tap dancing on the bladder, not to mention the other signs of a pregnancy that happen when a woman becomes pregnant.

She must have been in an unbelievable state of denial.

It’s also possible that she had no idea that what she did was what the Church said was wrong. There is a lot about her background we don’t know.

Having been pregnant three times, it is inconceivable that someone could NOT know they are pregnant.

And yet, we hear about cases like this (didn't know until the birth) not infrequently.

One would think fluid retention, swelling breasts and ballooning up 30 pounds in a few months, would be a Clue.

They meant to say there was not a pregnant nun. And the baby’s name was not Francis.

She must be a heavy sleeper or a victim of roofies. There are dangers in drinking the Communion Wine with the priest.

Apart from my sarcasm, she should be blessed that she is a mother. It is a wonderful experience for any women (even though the diaper stage stinks!).

The woman belongs to a convent near Rieti, which manages an old people's home...Local pastor Don Fabrizio Borrello told journalists that the nun planned to take care of the baby.

A baby in an old folks home. That kid is going to be spoiled rotten.

“A baby in an old folks home...”

I don’t think a nun is allowed to bring up a child. I am sure she will leave the convent. If she wants to remain a nun, she’ll have to give up the child for adoption.
