I was at a CCD class for parents whose children were preparing for sacraments and was amazed to hear the DRE pushing for women priests and urging people to lobby the hierarchy. Converts from protestantism were outraged and an angry debate ensued, as people in the class attempted to convey Church teachings to the DRE. The absurdity of the situation was beyond belief.

It's like the Catholic church has entered the Twilight Zone and there are some Catholics who won't admit it, even though it is blindingly obvious to the rest of us.

Protestant converts more conservative than Catholics? Interesting......

More knowledgeable regarding the actual teachings of the Faith (probably due in part to being self-catechized to some degree). The habits of study developed as Protestants served them well on their intellectual journey to Catholicism. The type of ivory tower liberalism/socialism embraced by many bishops is antithetical to Catholicism. Papal encyclicals condemning modernism (the synthesis of all heresies) and communism (and by logical extension socialism) have been ostentatiously ignored by many, but that doesn't negate the truth they contain.

People who join a religion (or any other group) because they've become intellectually convinced of its truth are frequently going to be more serious about their commitment than people who ended up members by, e.g., being born into a particular family. Nothing unusual or surprising about that.
