Did you not read the passage? It doesn't indicate rewarding bad behavior by putting one in an elevated position. It says to not hang out and be buddy-buddy with such a person, but to let him know why he should feel humiliation - if you want to take supposed slurs against your religion personally, perhaps you should trust Christ to be in charge and know that He does not require our protection - He stands by and of Himself above anything mere mortals can do. He will be the final arbiter and we need to look more at ourselves than worry about others - if they will not hear the Word, then seek out someone who will.
