Your Ash Wednesday Prayers (Devotion)
Religion Forum ^ | 5 Mar 14 | All of Us

Posted on 03/05/2014 11:51:14 AM PST by xzins

Almighty God, help us to take to heart through Your Holy Word the truth that sin entered the world through human disobedience to You.

Our sin has filled this world with envy, selfishness, hatred, greed, and other sins too many to list.

Yet human sin cannot be victorious over the grace of God that is ours in Christ Jesus our Lord.

We pray that You pour Your grace upon us as we strive to lives of sacrifice and holiness.

Enable us to daily defeat sin, so that we will know that joy which is unspeakable and full of glory.

Through Jesus we pray. Amen.

Dear Father, You know that we are but dust, and sinners too. But in spite of that You have ennobled us through grace to have the privilege of knowing Your son through faith and thus being saved. Help us to reflect upon You these coming 40 days until Resurrection Sunday, in whatever manner You should place upon our hearts, and to truly appreciate the credibility of Your Son’s sinlessness as displayed in His wilderness testing, and the awesome miracle of the lethal one-two punch You gave to sin and death through Your Son’s Cross and Your Son’s Resurrection. Let us live better lives for You through these things. We pray in the matchless name of Jesus our Savior and Lord, Amen.

LET us turn towards the Lord God and Father Almighty, and with a pure heart let us give Him sincere thanks as well as our littleness will allow: Let us with our whole hearts beseech His extraordinary clemency, that He may vouchsafe to hear our prayers according to His good pleasure. May He by His power drive our enemies far from us, lest we fall under the sway of the evil one in act or thought. May He increase our faith, rule our mind, give us spiritual thoughts, and at last lead us to His blessedness, through Jesus Christ His Son. Amen.

Written by St. Augustine (354-430) to conclude several of his sermons. This one is found in his Sermo CLXXXIII.
